Help the National Parks of Montenegro (Nacionalni Parkovi Crne Gore) map the mammals of Lake Skadar. This year the 10-day camp of the Field Study Group Of the Dutch Mammal Society will take place around Virpazar near Lake Skadar. They will also collaborate with the NGO Wildlife Montenegro, a young organisation focused on conducting research and protection of endangered species, supported by The Habitat Foundation since their foundation.
The camp will take place in October when the temperature is more pleasant. The camp starts on the 8th of October and will end on the 17th. Overnight accommodation from Monday evening till Thursday afternoon is included in the trip. The food is provided by local parties.
The total costs for the camp are €380 (excluding travel to and fro the campsite). Registration is open till May 24. A registration form is available online: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSea2jbqHv9VXc-YhLOhG3pSKTYkyEbGxuFjdVKVS7VC2v0Q0A/viewform

On the very eve of the new year, the Green Balkans field team of the "Life for Falcons" project recorded an exciting observation! The young female Saker Falcon which was tagged with a GPS transmitter earlier in the summer by the organisation's team, was located and photographed in the field. Naturally, the transmitter itself contributed to this, which for now justifies the goals for which it was placed, namely to show the bird's migration route, but also the suitable foraging, roosting and hopefully nesting places for Saker Falcons in Bulgaria.

In light of the discussion about the protective status of wolves in the European Union, here are some important publications about wolf ecology and predation behaviour: A strategy to minimal conflicts with the goal of Sustainable Animal husbandry.
Achieving sustainable wolf-human coexistence requires a thorough understanding of the ecological and social factors that influence it. This thesis adopts an interdisciplinary approach.
Two of the interesting results:
1. Wolves in areas with low availability of wild ungulates (deer, wild boar) show dependence on anthropogenic food sources (consumption of livestock, use of open garbage dump with carcass remains);
2. Financial marginalisation appears to be the main professional challenge faced by livestock farmers and is mainly due to the low sale prices of milk and meat combined with high production costs. Additional important business challenges included climate factors, lack of grazing management plans, inadequate infrastructure, lack of trust in central policies, rural population decline and lack of services. Wolves were ranked as the second most important challenge, leading to a decrease in job satisfaction. However, wolves were ranked low in livestock farmers' proposals for improving the livestock sector. The study indicates that although wolves cause problems for the livestock industry, they are not the only and most critical issue in the industry.

A great start of the new year for mammal researchers in Bulgaria. Nedko Nedyalkov received two wildlife cameras for his work on Roach's Mouse-tailed Dormouse, and Katherine Dimitrova received, on behalf of the bat researchers of the Museum of Natural History Sofia, six mist nets for their research on bats.

Do you have equipment that you don't use but that still works properly, donate them to researchers in Eastern Europe. Your gifts are highly appreciated.
