IN MEMORIAM: Dr. Sheku Kemoh Mansaray (1975 – 2026)
BRIDGE BETWEEN WORLDS, EMBODIMENT OF HUMILITY
It is with profound sadness and a heavy heart that we must say goodbye to our dear friend and secretary, Dr. Sheku Kemoh Mansaray. His sudden passing came as a tremendous shock, especially to those who had the privilege of knowing him.
AN ACADEMIC LUMINARY
Sheku was a man of exceptional intelligence and passion. With a Ph.D. in Environmental Sciences, an MSc in Economics and Management, and a BA in Political Science, he brought a wealth of expertise to the GRO West Africa Foundation. His impressive list of publications and his experience with international European Union research programs in Nigeria and Sierra Leone bear witness to his dedication to science and the development of West Africa.
AN INDISPENSIBLE PILLAR
Yet, Sheku was much more than just a board member. He was the crucial bridge between the Netherlands, Nigeria, and Sierra Leone. He understood the nuances of both worlds and effortlessly translated complex issues regarding sustainability, economics, and corporate social responsibility into practical solutions. His advice was always well-founded, sharp, and focused on a better future for the region that was so close to his heart.
A BEACON OF HUMILITY
Despite all his academic titles and achievements, we will remember Sheku foremost for his humanity. He was a paragon of humility. He never sought the foreground for the sake of his status, but always to help those around him move forward. To those who called upon him, he never said no; he was quite literally there for everyone.
His kindness, his listening ear, and his tireless commitment to leaving the world a little better and more sustainable made him a deeply beloved person.
A LASTING INSPIRATION
The loss is intense, and the emptiness he leaves behind is vast. In Sheku, we lose not only a brilliant mind but, above all, a loyal friend and a beautiful soul.
Our thoughts and deepest sympathies go out to his family and loved ones in the Netherlands, Sierra Leone, and beyond. We will continue his work in the spirit in which he lived: with knowledge, connection, and humility.

BRUG TUSSEN WERELDEN, DE BESCHEIDENHEID ZELVE.
Met diepe verslagenheid en een zwaar hart hebben wij afscheid moeten nemen van onze goede vriend en secretaris, Dr. Sheku Kemoh Mansaray. Zijn plotselinge overlijden was een enorme schok, vooral voor wie het voorrecht hadden hem gekend te hebben.
EEN ACADEMISCH ZWAARGEWICHT
Sheku was een man van uitzonderlijke intelligentie en passie. Met een Ph.D. in Milieuwetenschappen, een Msc in Economie en Management en een Bsc in Politieke Wetenschappen, bracht hij een schat aan expertise mee naar Stichting GRO West Africa. Zijn indrukwekkende lijst aan publicaties en zijn ervaring bij internationale onderzoeksprogramma’s van de Europese Unie in Nigeria en Sierra Leone getuigen van zijn toewijding aan de wetenschap en de ontwikkeling van West-Afrika.
ONMISBARE SPIL
Maar Sheku was veel meer dan alleen een bestuurder. Sheku was de cruciale brug tussen Nederland, Nigeria en Sierra Leone. Hij begreep de nuances van beide werelden en wist complexe vraagstukken op het gebied van duurzaamheid, economie en maatschappelijk verantwoord ondernemen moeiteloos te vertalen naar oplossingen. Zijn adviezen waren altijd gefundeerd, scherp en gericht op een betere toekomst voor de regio die hem zo na aan het hart lag.
EEN BAKEN VAN NEDERIGHEID
Ondanks al zijn academische titels en prestaties, zullen wij Sheku vooral herinneren om zijn menselijkheid. Hij was een toonbeeld van nederigheid. Hij trad nooit op de voorgrond omwille van zijn status, maar altijd om de mensen om hem heen verder te helpen. Wie een beroep op hem deed, kreeg nooit nul op het rekest; hij stond letterlijk voor iedereen klaar.
Zijn vriendelijkheid, zijn luisterend oor en zijn onvermoeibare inzet om de wereld een stukje beter en duurzamer achter te laten, maakten hem tot een geliefd mens.
EEN BLIJVENDE INSPIRATIEBRON
Het gemis is intens en de leegte die hij achterlaat is groot. Wij verliezen in Sheku niet alleen een briljant brein, maar bovenal een loyale vriend en een prachtig mens.
Onze gedachten en medeleven gaan uit naar zijn familie en naasten in Nederland, Sierra Leone en daarbuiten. Wij zullen zijn werk voortzetten in de geest waarin hij dat deed: met kennis, verbinding en bescheidenheid.
RUST IN VREDE, beste Sheku. Bedankt voor alles wat je voor ons en voor Afrika hebt betekend.
