When did you start getting involved in the climate/ sustainability world?
I first truly opened my eyes to the climate/sustainability world when I started my BSc in Marine Biology in 2015. I soon realised that almost every marine species I studied was negatively impacted by human activity in some way, with most being critically endangered and close to extinction. This really inspired me to play my part and live a more sustainable life.

What is your biggest climate goal for the century?
My biggest goal for this century is for sustainability to become the norm for everyone. The more people we have taking small steps, the more of a positive impact we will make.

What is your favorite zero waste/ sustainability swap?
My favourite sustainability swaps have got to be using reusable bags for grocery shopping, and using a reusable cup for my take away coffees! I go food shopping and drink coffee a lot, so these swaps have made a big difference for me!

If you can be any fruit, plant, or mushroom which one would it be?
It would of course have to be aloe vera. Not at all demanding and pretty ‘cool’ (if I do say so myself)!

Next up on our team takeover is JESS!

Name: Jess Miles

Location: Washington D.C. area

When did you start getting involved in the climate/ sustainability world: I read Philip Pullman’s The Golden Compass as a kid, which piqued my interest in the arctic and polar bears. My high school was fortunate enough to have an AP Environmental Science class, which is the first time I realized you could make a career out of this field. I’ve been involved ever since.

What is your biggest climate goal for the century: Well, it would be nice if we could stop the arctic from melting and save the polar bears. TBD on that.

What is your favorite zero waste/ sustainability swap?: I really like CamelBak reusable water bottles. I am a big water drinker, and I find the top fun.

If you can be any fruit, plant, or mushroom which one would it be?

Fruit: If I could be any fruit, it would be a kumquat! I tried one for the first time recently, and I realized they really pack a punch! They’re like an all natural sour-patch kids. Small but mighty.

Plant: I feel like there are much more exotic plants out there, so I might change my mind, but at the moment I feel like I’d want to be a sunflower. I learned recently that they are constantly turning so that they face the sun, which I find really cool. Also, their seeds are edible, so I’d never have to buy snacks.

If last week’s podcast inspired you to try green cleaning products look no further…..

…. meet the three musketeers of cleaning day! not only can these three clean just about anything, they are also super easy to make, non-toxic (pet and baby friendly) and smell amazing who else can say that their cleaning products also double as aromatherapy ? (We’re only partially kidding).

🌿 baking soda aka sodium bicarbonate is actually a type of salt.
it causes dirt and grease to dissolve in water It’s also amazing because its a mild abrasive perfect for tackling those tough stains.
pH of 8 so it is very alkaline

🌿 white vinegar (mixed with a little rubbing alcohol) aka acetic acid. The acidic nature of vinegar is powerful enough that it can dissolve dirt, grease and grime and its even powerful enough to kill bacteria.
pH of around 2.5 so it is very acidic
Recipe:
1 part water, 1 part vinegar, 1/2 part rubbing alcohol, 10-20 drops essential oil of your choice

🌿 Castile soap can be used to clean anything! Since its a soap its also a surfactant which is good at removing dirt, grease and germs. It has a low pH of around 3
Recipe
1 part water, 1 part castile soap, 10-20 drops essential oils of your choice
Chemistry tip! Be careful not to mix your acids and bases because when they mix they cancel each other out and you end up with a neutral (non powerful)substance!

Safety tip! While making your own cleaning products is an amazing way to protect the earth and yourself from harmful chemicals be sure to research different products before you use them together as some, once combined, can be quite lethal!

When did you start getting involved in the climate/ sustainability world?

I woke up to the climate crisis with the IPCC report in 2013. From then I started looking for how I could make an impact in the fight to save the future, and protect the people most affected!

What is your biggest climate goal for the century?

Globally to get to net zero emotions by 2050 in an equitable manor. Personally, I want to vote with my dollar so I support brands who are contributing positively to our society and future, by focusing on buying less but better.

What is your favorite zero waste/ sustainability swap?

Before the pandemic, I was a big proponent of going to fast-food salad places for lunch. I would always get the chicken. When I learned more about the supply chain of mass produced meats I switched over to all veggie, which not only was equally as delicious but was also a healthier option. This small choice made it easier to discover other ways I could start living a more sustainable lifestyle.

If you can be any fruit, plant, or mushroom which one would it be?

I would be a hen-of-the-wood, or Maitaki, mushroom, and I would love it. They are connected to vast community of other living things, so super social, incredibly delicious, wildly interesting in appearance, and, as my wife says, my dad jokes have since made me such a fun guy (get it??), so just makes sense really.

Welcome to a new series! Debunked: busting common climate change (and science) myths and misconceptions!

First up is population growth! This concept is pretty prevalent that population growth and carbon dioxide emissions go hand in hand but the link between the two is weak.

Instead its more important to focus on countries that emit the most (hint hint its the global north) these countries also have a falling population growth rate!!

Our focus, when it comes to climate change and emissions, should look more towards corporations and companies responsible instead of blaming individuals.

What science myth should we debunk next?!
