From 27–29 April, governments and civil society gathered in Santa Marta, Colombia, for the first-ever “Transition Away from Fossil Fuels” Conference. A milestone moment for climate action! 🌍

WECF and the Women and Gender Constituency (WGC) were proud to be part of this important moment and help drive meaningful outcomes:

⚡ collective action to transform supply and demand
⚡ a strong and organised feminist presence in the High-Level Segment
⚡ united advocacy for the recognition and redistribution of care work, reparative justice, and the democratisation of energy

The transition away from fossil fuels is inevitable. The real question is: who will shape it, who will benefit from it, and who risks being left behind?

Have you been following what’s just happened in Santa Marta? 🌍

The first Conference on Transitioning Away from Fossil Fuels, hosted by Netherlands and Colombia, brought together specialists, decision-makers and civil society to confront some of the toughest questions of our time: gender justice, militarisation and the lived realities of frontline communities.

At the 27th CTCN Advisory Board meeting in Incheon, South Korea, WECF and WGC are advocating for gender-responsive technology and equal access for all. 💪🏽⁠

Representing both organisations, Clara Lezziero delivered an intervention last week, highlighting the new UNFCCC Gender Action Plan and its vital role for climate action, as well as the need for effective implementation of the Belém Technology Implementation Programme. ⁠

Technology initiatives must be gender-responsive, promote equality, give agency to women, and recognise the specific needs and circumstances of children, young people, persons with disabilities, and local communities. 👩🏽‍💻⁠

We spoke with people in Groningen about energy poverty, a problem that affects more people than you might expect. Rising energy costs, poorly insulated homes, and insufficient support are making life difficult for many households.

Food systems are deeply entangled with fossil fuels, extractive economies and global inequalities.

Our joint submission to the UN Special Rapporteur on Climate Change and Human Rights Elisa Morgera brings forward an analysis that remains largely absent from policy discussions:

👉 how patriarchal masculinities shape food systems — across governance, land ownership, industrial agriculture, food cultures and economic systems.

Drawing on a global consultation, the submission traces how these dynamics operate across the system — including through: 1) fossil fuel–dependent agriculture and petrochemical inputs; 2) extractive economic models rooted in control, competition and perpetual growth; 3) militarised political economies that prioritise war over food sovereignty; 4) colonial and neocolonial structures shaping land, trade and development pathways.

At the same time, stories of change from Bangladesh, Zambia, Colombia and the Niger Delta point to pathways grounded in food sovereignty and care, ecological stewardship, and shared decision-making.

“The fight for equality will only be complete when it is truly inclusive. Rights, justice, and action will only have real meaning when they finally reach the most remote areas”, reminds us Patricia Kasaki from Jambo Radio, a Gender Just Climate Solutions awardee from the DRC.

The GJCS awardees highlight the powerful work led by women in their communities not only on 8 March, but every single day. 💪🏽

📍 In the DRC, Jambo Radio Rural works with women who are the guardians of their communities’ daily lives, food security, and cultural roots. 📻

📍 In Pakistan, an event celebrated the Suhaee Federation of Women Cotton Workers Trade Unions in Matiari. The federation was formed with the support of Sindh Community Foundation (SCF), led by GJCS awardee Javed Hussain, to strengthen labour rights and amplify the collective voice of rural women workers. 🌱

Across regions and communities, women are leading the way towards climate justice, equality, and stronger communities.

This is more than mobilisation. It is a political signal.

Across regions and movements, feminists, human rights defenders, climate advocates, youth organisers and development actors are naming something that has too often been treated as technical: UN funding is power.

When major contributors delay or withhold assessed contributions, they are not simply managing budgets. They are reshaping global governance without negotiation.

The scale and diversity of this response shows a growing refusal within civil society to normalise financial coercion as a geopolitical strategy.

The breadth of support also signals a shift in who is defending multilateralism. Organisations from feminist networks and grassroots movements are stepping into debates traditionally dominated by states, asserting that multilateral institutions are not abstract structures but essential infrastructure for rights, gender equality and collective security.
