Wat is UDS? De Utrecht Debating Society (UDS) is een gezellige studentendebatvereniging waarin een diverse groep studenten samenkomen om te debatteren. Omdat we openstaan voor alle studenten in Utrecht, heeft onze vereniging een gevarieerd ledenbestand die een leuk gesprek nooit uit de weg gaat. Leden van UDS zijn vrij om te bepalen hoe a

ctief ze zijn en waarom ze zich bij ons aansluiten. Sommige leden zijn er vooral voor een praatje onder het genot van een biertje, anderen komen vooral voor het debat. We komen elke woensdagavond om 19:30 samen in het Locke-gebouw op de campus van de University College. Daar debatteren we en verzorgen we regelmatig workshops, gegeven door de beste sprekers van Nederland. Op de avond is een ongedwongen, gemoedelijk sfeer waarbij natuurlijk ook ruimte is voor de gezelligheid. We sluiten de avond traditioneel af in onze stamkroeg ’t Pandje. Ook gaan we weekenden met elkaar weg, houden we etentjes, organiseren gezamenlijke activiteiten en bezoeken we nationale en internationale toernooien. Kortom: bij UDS gaan inhoud en gezelligheid hand in hand! Debatteren is een waardevolle skill. Dit is handig bij je studie, je latere baan en elke keer dat je jouw mening wilt laten doorklinken. Debatteren helpt je bijvoorbeeld beter te kunnen spreken, met meer zelfvertrouwen. Verder leert debatteren je om snel een situatie kritisch te analyseren en je argumenteren en gedachten beter te structureren. Wij zijn vooral een hechte vereniging waarin je iedereen snel leert kennen. Er wordt geen onderscheid gemaakt tussen leden, iedereen is gelijkwaardig en hoort erbij vanaf dag één. Samen maken we geweldige (buitenlandse) reizen naar vele debattoernooien en leren we veel over allerlei maatschappelijke onderwerpen. Je leert een groot spreker worden op een gezellige manier! Jaarlijks organiseert de toernooien commissie het Utrechtse debattoernooi Utrecht Open. Deze vindt standaard plaats in het laatste weekend van mei. Leden kunnen deelnemen aan deze commissie en onvergetelijke ervaringen opdoen! Workshops

On February 25th, UDS held its semi-annual ✨General Assembly✨. After a collective dinner prepared by the board, we reviewed the accomplishments of Board Eremchuk so far and discussed motions—suggestions from members on how to improve life at UDS. The highlight of the GA was undoubtedly the update from the newly formed Song Committee, which has been working on modernizing the lyrics of the UDS song. Thank you, everyone, for joining! 💚

On December 14-15th, UDS took part in Nijmegen Open! 🏆

All teams and judges of UDS did a great job participating in all 6 rounds 🫠 At the end, UDS team UU Liberation Front ( ) made history by breaking into Grand Finals of the tournament alongside some experienced (very experienced) teams! In addition, Kseniia for the first time broke into finals as a judge!

We are thankful to the organizers of Nijmegen Open for organizing such a wonderful tournament and .spackler for tabbing it so well! 💚 We are also beyond proud of all our teams for participating in the tournament! 💚 The results of the tournament were celebrated with a delicious apple pie 😋

On November 30 - December 1, UDS participated in one of the largest debating tournaments in the Netherlands: Amsterdam Open! 🏆

With 3.5 teams and 4 judges, we had an amazing weekend full of exciting debates:
🌟 Martijn broke to semi-finals, judged by our member Kseniia !
🌟 Daan .spackler and Niya judged the Novice Finals!
🌟 A special shoutout to Raoul Meijer , who served as a CA and helped craft the fantastic motions we debated!

We’re beyond proud of everyone who participated and can’t wait to attend again next year. Thank you, Amsterdam Open, for a great tournament! 💚

On November 9th, UDS competed at Erasmus Novice Cup! ⭐️
Two of our novice teams proudly represented UDS 💪🏻 Three UDS judges broke, with judging the silver final motion about himself 😂, and and (both of whom also CAed the tournament) judging the golden finals! 🤩

UDS is super proud of everyone who participated! 💚✨

This week, UDS hosted a Pool Night, bringing together members for a fun-filled evening of friendly competition! 🎱

It was a great opportunity for members to get to know each other better. New members got to connect with UDS veterans, while sharing their interests and showing their fun side. Old members reconnected with each other, with old and new boards even competing in a fierce game of pool (new board won btw 🥳).

A big thank you to everyone who came and made the night a success!✨ See you at our next social event which will be organized by a new social committee! (If you want to be in one, apply!)

On October 26th, UDS proudly competed in the Leiden Novice Tournament organized by , aiming for the title of the strongest novice team in the country! ⭐️

Saying they did great would be an understatement—UDS truly took the tournament by storm! The top three best speakers were all from UDS, with taking first prize🥇, Max securing second🥈, and finishing third🥉! In an exciting finale, the UDS team ‘Buff History Buffs’ (Elias and Max) claimed the main trophy of the tournament! 🏆

It wasn’t just the speakers who excelled; our judges shined too! All three UDS judges, including , and , broke, with Martijn even chairing the grand finals.

UDS couldn’t be prouder of everyone who participated. Join us this Wednesday for a celebration with the best cake we can find! UDS Hoogh! 💚✨

This week UDS Debate Academy has finally come to an end ✨

Over the course of four weeks, more than sixty participants joined the academy to learn from UDS masters, engage in provoking discussion and make new friends 🤩

Three informative and engaging workshops were organised by amazing Michelle , Niya , Raoul , Roald , Martijn , and Iddo . Thank you so much for giving workshops, it was a pleasure to have you at UDS, and we all learned a lot! 👏🏻

The final chapter of Debate Academy was the internal tournament organised by incredible Niya, Raoul and Roald. Twelve teams competed for the title of the best team, and team Bali (Barbara and Liepa ) took home the trophy! 🏆 Congratulations to Liepa, Vali , Laura .campeglia, and Barbara for being the top 1, 2, and 3 best speakers of the tournament! We were impressed by the level of debates during the tournament and believe that our participants have a bright debating future ahead of them! 🥇

We would like to thank everyone who contributed to the organisation of the Debate Academy: UDS board, workshop lecturers, CAs, judges, and volunteers. Without you, it wouldn’t have been as enjoyable and amazing as it was 💚

Last weekend, UDS took part in the Dutch Debating League, a tournament that brings together the best teams to find out who’s the strongest in the Netherlands! 💥

Our two teams really gave it their all, with Raoul & Roald making it to the finals! And to top it off, Raoul was named the 5th Best Speaker of the tournament! 🏅🔥 Niya & Martijn were amazing too, and let’s not forget our judges Max & Patrick—Patrick even judged the finals! 💼⚖️

The teams debated thought-provoking topics, including whether single-issue parties do more harm than good, rejecting the narrative that ‘women can have it all,’ and if the Dutch government should financially de-incentivise the intake of international students into higher education institutions. In the finals, they debated whether we should oppose the idea that individual actions can change the world. 💡

Although we didn’t bring home the trophy, everyone had a great time, and we couldn’t be more proud of their hard work and dedication. 🎉 Huge shoutout to everyone—you made us proud! 💗
