🚨 130+ organisations call on UN Climate Change carbon market body to act

More than 130 civil society organisations, networks and other stakeholders are calling on the Supervisory Body of the Paris Agreement Crediting Mechanism (PACM) to immediately suspend the first carbon credits issued under the UN’s new “high-integrity” Article 6.4 carbon market.

The credits come from a controversial biomass cookstove programme in Myanmar, where the project operated amid armed conflict, displacement and serious human rights abuses. There are also major concerns about the project’s emissions calculations, monitoring, verification and stakeholder participation.

📣 Our call is clear: the Supervisory Body must suspend any further issuance, transfer or use of credits from PoA 10471 and commission an independent, comprehensive assessment of the project and how these credits were approved.

The first project approved under a new carbon market mechanism is an important test of what “high integrity” actually means. The UN must not allow methodological rules and calculations on paper to override the realities in which carbon credits are generated.

Who benefits from carbon-removal projects — and who pays the price?

A new Newslaundry investigation looks at biochar projects in Gujarat’s Banni grasslands and raises important questions about community benefits, water use, ecosystem impacts and the growing industrialisation of carbon removal.

🌳 What does “green steel” look like from the perspective of communities living alongside the plantations?

Our new investigation into Aperam BioEnergia in Brazil’s Jequitinhonha Valley tells a very different story from the company’s sustainability narrative.

Eucalyptus plantations have replaced areas traditionally used for grazing, gathering, fishing and collecting wood. Springs have dried up. Water has become increasingly scarce. The Cerrado has been transformed.

And now charcoal and biochar are being given new green labels through “green steel” and carbon-removal markets.

But changing the label does not change the impacts.

The communities at the centre of our investigation are demanding land, water, restoration and justice — and a different model of development.

‘Green steel’ built on disappearing water and stolen land.

Today, on the International Day of Struggle Against Monoculture Tree Plantations, GFC, together with the HOME Alliance, Biofuelwatch and the Biomass Action Network, is launching a new investigation into Aperam BioEnergia's eucalyptus plantations in Brazil's Jequitinhonha Valley.

The report, Dry Streams in an Ocean of Eucalyptus, challenges the idea that industrial eucalyptus plantations, charcoal and biochar are climate solutions. Instead, it documents decades of land dispossession, drying springs, biodiversity loss and the growing burden placed on traditional and Quilombola communities—especially women and youth, who feel the impacts more acutely.

As Aperam expands with international financial backing, we're calling on governments, financiers, certifiers and global buyers to stop supporting this harmful model and invest instead in community rights, ecological restoration and real climate solutions.

🌱 New study | International Day of Struggle Against Monoculture Tree Plantations

Today, on the International Day of Struggle Against Monoculture Tree Plantations, we are launching a new study exposing the impacts of eucalyptus monoculture expansion in Brazil.

📖 “Dry Streams in an Ocean of Eucalyptus” documents how the expansion of eucalyptus plantations linked to Aperam (Aperam no Brasil, Aperam) is affecting water, territories, biodiversity and local communities — and calls for this expansion to be halted.

Monoculture tree plantations are not forests. They transform landscapes, place pressure on water resources, threaten biodiversity and can undermine the rights and livelihoods of communities who depend on their territories, particularly women and girls.

The study brings together evidence and testimonies from affected territories, highlighting the need to move away from industrial tree plantations and towards forest protection, territorial rights, biodiversity, water justice and gender-just solutions.

🌳 Forests are more than trees.
💧 Water is not a commodity.
✊🏽 Communities must have the right to decide what happens in their territories.

GFC members and allies are helping to build a new gender-just map of community-led solutions for forests, people and the planet.

What does a real solution to the climate and biodiversity crises look like?

It might be an agroecological farming system rooted in traditional knowledge. It might be a community defending its territory from extractive industries. It might be women organising to protect forests, strengthen food sovereignty or build more equitable forms of community governance.

And it is not just about what communities are doing. It is also about what makes these solutions possible, and just as importantly, what stands in their way.

🌱 Real solutions are already being built by communities around the world.

From agroecology and traditional knowledge to defending forests and territories, communities across the Global South are creating ways of caring for people, forests and biodiversity that challenge the false solutions offered by carbon markets and other market-based approaches.

But what makes a solution genuinely transformative and gender-just?

Global Forest Coalition members and allies are working together to develop a new Gender-Just Real Solutions Map that will highlight community-led initiatives while also documenting the conditions that allow them to flourish — and the barriers that stand in their way.

The map is being built collectively, with participants reflecting on questions such as: Who makes decisions? Who controls land and resources? Who benefits? Whose work and knowledge are recognised?

🗺️ The map is now taking shape, with a public launch planned for November 2026.

🌏 Solidarity with communities affected by the devastating floods in Nepal and Tibet

The Global Forest Coalition expresses its deepest sorrow and solidarity with the communities affected by the devastating flash floods and related disasters in Nepal and Tibet.

As urgent humanitarian assistance, relief and reconstruction efforts continue, we must also ask why communities and ecosystems across the fragile Himalayan region are becoming increasingly vulnerable.

Climate change is intensifying extreme weather and other hazards across the Hindu Kush Himalaya. At the same time, extractive industries, hydropower, roads, excavation and other poorly planned development can place additional pressure on fragile ecosystems and communities.

Recovery must not simply rebuild existing vulnerabilities. GFC calls for community-centred reconstruction, stronger protection of forests and watersheds, respect for Indigenous Peoples' and local communities' rights, and greater international support for countries facing the impacts of a climate crisis they have contributed little to creating.

The Himalayas are not an extraction frontier. Their protection is a global responsibility.
