In the autumn of 2010, we spent 45 days volunteering in Nkhata Bay (Malawi, Africa) and helped the local charity organization Chimwemwe Umbrella (Happy Umbrella). Through it we came into contact with a group of roughly 30 vulnerable kids (i.e. orphans and/or extremely poor) between 4 and 12. We took care of them every afternoon teaching them basic conversational English through educative games and
activities in the shelter school of the organization. The shelter school was meant to keep the children off the street in the afternoon after the morning regular school hours. The children we met there are lovely creatures completely abandoned to themselves. The level of education provided by the public schools they attend is less than basic and very often the children barely know how to write even their own names. Moreover they desperately need human contact and care. This considered, through this blog and with your help, we would like to keep on helping them. The first step is to provide them proper education and good living conditions. It is for this reason that together with a local contact Gresham Agile Ng’ambi, in 2011, we selected the boarding schools which best fulfill the needs of these kids and still allow them to remain in contact with their families and communities. To start with we selected the 4 children who touched our hearts more deeply: Malita, Ramos, Joyce and Witness (=Marajowi). Today, Gresham left us, but these children are attending proper boarding primary schools and Ramos just graduated from it.
