Netherlands Commission for Environmental Assessment - NCEA

The NCEA is an independent expert body that provides advisory services and capacity development on environmental assessment.

The Netherlands Commission for Environmental Assessment (NCEA) was established by decree in 1987 as an independent advisory body of experts. The NCEA supports governments in improving the quality of their environmental assessment systems. It also advises governments on the quality of environmental information in environmental assessment reports (EIA or SEA reports). These reports are not written b

y the NCEA: they are usually written by consultancy bureaus, for private initiators, local or provincial authorities and central governments. The NCEA does not get involved in decision-making or political considerations. The NCEA’s activities abroad are usually commissioned by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In line with their programme, attention is paid not only to environmental impacts but also to social and economic impacts, for example the living standards of local residents. The three most important qualities of the NCEA are:
• independence;
• expertise;
• transparency. The NCEA’s status as an autonomous foundation ensures that its assessments are achieved independently from government accountability and political considerations. ⚡️🎬 NCEA Flash - In the coming months, the NCEA will be supporting the development of good governance for Lake Nokoué and the two adjoining cities Cotonou and Porto Novo, the two largest cities in the country, with a total of almost 900.000 inhabitants. From 1 October 2024, Dennis van Peppen will succeed Rob Verheem as Director International at the Netherlands Commission for Environmental Assessment (NCEA). Until recently, Van Peppen led the Climate and Water department at the Netherlands Enterprise and Development Agency (RVO).
