📣 Our partner Plataforma DDTT in Argentina just launched an amazing tool called 𝗠𝗼𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗼𝗿. It documents attacks on environmental human rights defenders in 7 countries Latin America and the Caribbean.

This tool, built by grassroots organisations using their own secure and strategic data, strengthens regional advocacy, collective protection and political memory.

At Both ENDS, we believe that long-term partnerships rooted in trust can transform how resources flow to those who need them most. Our Dare to Trust initiative is a powerful example of what happens when funders truly let go of conditions and trust local actors to lead.

Thanks to the support of the Dutch Postcode Lottery, this year we provided unconditional funding to 14 partner organisations working with Women Environmental Human Rights Defenders (WEHRDs) around the world. No restrictive requirements. No predefined activities. Just trust.

And the results speak for themselves. From mental health support to collective care and other often underfunded priorities, WEHRDs used the resources in ways that were meaningful, effective and deeply rooted in local realities.

This year the Both ENDS team visited Food Forest Ketelbroek, the pioneering project of Wouter van Eck and Pieter Jansen. What an inspiring place! Surrounded by fields of ryegrass, beets and potatoes, the food forest is a vibrant oasis full of birdsong, buzzing insects and wildlife: from hares and badgers to foxes, wild boars and… beavers.

The beavers? “They work for us,” Wouter joked. Their dams help retain water, allowing the forest to thrive even in dry years. A perfect example of how a food forest operates: doing things differently, persevering, and looking at possibilities rather than limitations. Even when rules and systems aren’t designed for it.

This mirrors the experience of many of Both ENDS’ partner organisations in the Sahel, Nicaragua and India, who also pioneer sustainable food production in systems not built to support them. Yet they move ahead, show that it works, and inspire others to follow.

This year Tamara Mohr attended the Global Alliance For Green And Gender Action (GAGGA) Global Meeting in Indonesia with Both ENDS, FCAM Foundation, and Mama Cash, bringing together 80 partners from 27 countries.

Tamara highlights the strength, resilience, and leadership of these local activists. Through their work, communities gain a voice in decision-making, forests and mangroves are protected, and climate policies and initiatives become more inclusive and effective.

As one of the partners beautifully said during the meeting: “When women are strong, it is also a form of self-care and protection among each other, collective care. We cannot move forward alone. We have resisted men and they have realised that we are strong, and now they are looking for women as allies.”

Nick Middeldorp returned to Kiad for the final time, witnessing how years of dialogue after the Barro Blanco dam conflict are finally bringing tangible improvements to the Ngäbe communities. After long and difficult negotiations, FMO and DEG acknowledged the harm caused and committed to supporting community-led recovery.

Seeing new houses rise and essential services on the way, Nick reflects on a hard-won milestone: the communities of M10 held powerful institutions to account. Read his refelections: https://www.bothends.org/en/Whats-new/Blogs/The-Long-Road-to-Justice-for-the-Ng%C3%A4be-of-Kiad/

Marius Troost (Both ENDS) recently visited East Sulawesi with Puanifesto to investigate the impacts of nickel mining: a key resource for Europe’s energy transition.

He witnessed deforestation, polluted rivers, coal-fired smelters, and unsafe working conditions. Local communities and workers often have nowhere to turn, while EU demand for nickel could worsen these impacts through the new EU–Indonesia CEPA.
