🇫🇷 Youth Exchange, Human Unity: Tackle Islamophobia - Through Daniel’s lens

End of October, Dutch members from Utrecht Youth Network took part in the Erasmus+ Youth Exchange “Human Unity: Tackle Islamophobia” in the south of France, hosted by .cyn

Together with participants from 🇫🇷 France, 🇩🇰 Denmark, 🇮🇹 Italy, 🇹🇷 Türkiye, 🇯🇴 Jordan, 🇦🇲 Armenia and 🇲🇰 North Macedonia, we explored how to tackle Islamophobia, strengthen social cohesion and promote human rights.

From interactive workshops to hiking in the mountains of southern France, from intercultural evenings with homemade dishes to long coffee breaks, meaningful conversations and cultural bonding, a week full of learning and connection.

One of the sessions led by the Dutch team focused on media literacy, where participants analysed how different newspapers report on global events and reflected on bias, framing and misinformation.

As part of the local follow-up, we continued these conversations in Utrecht through a Dialogue Dinner, bringing the learning back to our own community.

From Global to Local: Conflict Resolution Workshop 🤝🌍

In August, Utrecht Youth Network partnered in the international training “Hope Beyond Crisis”, hosted by our network partner .cyn .
Three of our youth workers, Anouk, Bodine, and Yousef, joined participants from ten countries to strengthen their capacity to respond to humanitarian crises and manage conflicts.

One theme that resonated most with us was conflict resolution. Through practical exercises, we explored negotiation and mediation techniques and their connection to international humanitarian law.

Now, it’s time to bring this knowledge back home to Utrecht. Together with the Utrecht student association of Conflict Studies, where Bodine and Yousef are alumni, and , we are organising an interactive local workshop!

We’ll explore the conflict cycle and Friedrich Glasl’s nine stages of conflict escalation, before testing your skills in a hands-on group roleplay. Can you find common ground, or will the conflict escalate?

ALLES = POLITIEK 📣

Met ons internationale Erasmus+ jongerenparticipatieproject brachten we dit jaar de politiek letterlijk dichtbij. Tijdens verschillende lokale workshops gingen jongeren aan de slag met thema’s die hen direct raken: van wonen, onderwijs en mentale gezondheid tot veiligheid en gelijke kansen.

In Nederland kwamen jongeren uit vijf EU-landen samen. Een van de hoogtepunten: een ontmoeting en debatsimulatie met een jonge politicus in de raadzaal van Utrecht, om te laten zien dat politiek niet iets is van ver-van-ons-bed, maar iets wat overal om ons heen gebeurt. 🌍

Ons project sluit goed aan bij de campagne van NJR, want of het nu gaat over het bestaan van jongerenuitwisselingen als deze, of over jouw buurt; ALLES = POLITIEK. En in de politiek wordt nog te vaak besloten over jongeren, zonder jongeren.

🗳️ Vandaag, 29 oktober, roepen we alle Nederlandse jongeren op: ga stemmen. Maar deze oproep geldt voor iedereen, waar je ook woont. Wanneer er verkiezingen zijn in jouw gemeente, land of regio: laat je stem horen. Want als wij het niet doen, beslist een ander voor ons.

EVERYTHING=POLITICS 📣

With our international Erasmus+ youth participation project, we literally brought politics closer this year. Through various local workshops, young people worked on topics that directly affect them, from housing, education and mental health to safety and equal opportunities.

In the Netherlands, participants from five EU countries came together.
One highlight was a debate simulation and meeting with a young local politician in Utrecht’s city council chamber, showing that politics isn’t something far away, but something happening all around us. 🌍

Our project connects closely to NJR’s campaign: whether it’s about the existence of youth exchanges like this one, or about your local neighbourhood; EVERYTHING = POLITICS. Because too often, decisions are made about young people, without young people.

🗳️ Today, October 29, we call on all Dutch young people: go vote. But this call goes for everyone, wherever you live. Whenever elections take place in your town, country or region: make your voice heard. Because if we don’t, someone else decide for us.

🌎 LOCAL EVENT 🌎

Four members of Utrecht Youth Network, David, Miriam, Roser, and Yousef, will lead an interactive workshop on radicalisation together with .

Earlier this summer, they joined us on the Erasmus+ youth exchange Stories Instead in Denmark 🇩🇰, where youth from eight countries came together to explore preventing radicalisation through storytelling and intercultural exchange.

💡As alumni of the Conflict Studies and Human Rights program here in Utrecht, they already had a strong academic understanding of the topic. The Erasmus+ training gave them a chance to build on this by learning new, creative, and hands‑on tools, showing the power of informal learning and the spirit of Erasmus+.

📍TOMORROW, they’ll share these new methods with you! During this local workshop in Utrecht, we’ll look at how radicalisation is defined in research and policy-making, reflect on our own understandings through a fishbowl debate, and cover key theories, risk factors, and prevention strategies. Finally, we’ll put what we’ve learned into practice with an engaging group activity.

Stories Instead 🌍✨

Over one unforgettable week in Denmark, youth from 8 countries came together for the Erasmus+ youth exchange Stories Instead hosted by our partner .cyn. Through workshops, creative sessions, and lots of sharing, we explored how to counter radicalization with creativity, dialogue, and storytelling.

Together we learned new ways to promote inclusion, challenge stereotypes, and make space for belonging, creating visual leaflets and messages of hope that will continue to inspire others.

💡 The Dutch team, young people part of our Utrecht Youth Network, also facilitated a special workshop called Talk Back with Facts, where we reflected on identity and belonging through activities like “Cross the Line,” discussed narratives vs. reality, and created our own booklet to encourage others to speak up for inclusion.

Next week, our members will organize a local activity here in Utrecht to share the learning outcomes of this project, stay tuned for the invitation!

An alternative 7 - days media literacy training course, in an old oak tree forest of Croatia for youth workers who want to transform their work through artificial intelligence (AI) tools and emotional intelligence (EI) skills. It’s all about mixing AI with emotions!

👉 Why is this relevant in youthwork?
As AI influences decisions and communication, combining it with emotional intelligence strengthens resilience, creativity and critical thinking. This balance allows youth workers of different generations to challenge bias, adapt to change, and use AI tools ethically and effectively.

To fully embrace the forest experience, accommodation will be in tents [but toilet & showers indoors]. Please bring your own tent, sleeping bag, and mat!
