One of the highlights of ASM 2026 was the keynote lecture by Prof. Nuno Sousa, President of the Portuguese Agency for Clinical Research and Biomedical Innovation (AICIB). 🎤

In his presentation, Prof. Sousa explored the importance of a unified European infrastructure for clinical research and the opportunities that greater coordination can create for researchers, institutions, healthcare systems, and patients across Europe.

As an organisation dedicated to advancing clinical investigation, AICIB plays an important role in strengthening research capacity, supporting innovation, promoting training, and fostering collaboration between academia, healthcare, industry, and society.

The keynote sparked valuable discussions on how Europe can continue to build a more connected and effective research ecosystem - one that accelerates scientific discovery while improving patient outcomes. 🌍

We thank Prof. Sousa for sharing his insights and contributing to the scientific programme of ASM 2026.

Every breakthrough starts with a question worth exploring.

The ESCI Exploratory Grant exists to support exactly that - innovative ideas with the potential to advance clinical investigation and open new research directions. 🔬

One of the recent recipients of this grant is Dr. Cláudia Marques, researcher at CINTESIS and NOVA Medical School, whose work focuses on nutrition, metabolism, and gut microbiota. 🧬

By supporting promising researchers and exploratory projects, ESCI aims to create opportunities for scientific discovery at an early stage - where new questions emerge, new collaborations begin, and future breakthroughs take shape.

Congratulations to Dr. Marques, and thank you for contributing to the advancement of clinical investigation.

One Annual Scientific Meeting ends. The next one begins.

We are delighted to announce that the 61st Annual Scientific Meeting of the European Society for Clinical Investigation will take place in Coimbra, Portugal, from 2-4 June 2027. 🇵🇹

Hosted by the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Coimbra, ESCI 2027 will bring together clinicians, researchers, and scientist-practitioners from across Europe and beyond to continue the conversations that drive clinical investigation forward.

Under the theme "Metabolic Health in an Obesogenic World: Science, Literacy and Clinical Action", the meeting will explore one of the most pressing health challenges of our time. From fundamental mechanisms to public health strategies and clinical implementation, ESCI 2027 will provide a platform for multidisciplinary exchange and collaboration. 🧠

What does it take to shape the future of biotechnology, regenerative medicine, and advanced therapies? 🏅

ESCI is proud to congratulate Prof. Paula Alves, recipient of the Albert Struyvenberg Medal 2026 - one of the highest distinctions awarded by the European Society for Clinical Investigation.

As CEO of iBET and a globally recognised leader in biotechnology and bioprocess engineering, Prof. Alves has made pioneering contributions to the development and manufacturing of biological products, vaccines, gene therapies, and cell-based therapies. Her work has helped bridge the gap between scientific innovation and clinical application, creating impact far beyond the laboratory.

We warmly congratulate Prof. Alves on this well-deserved recognition and celebrate her outstanding contribution to science, innovation, and medicine. 👏

Every abstract tells a story. Together, they tell us where clinical research is heading.

As we gather for the 60th Annual Scientific Meeting of the European Society for Clinical Investigation, the European Journal of Clinical Investigation (EJCI) is proud to showcase the scientific contributions that make this community so impactful. 🔬

Behind every abstract is a research question, a team of dedicated investigators, and a commitment to advancing our understanding of human health. From fundamental mechanisms to translational breakthroughs and clinical applications, these contributions reflect the breadth and quality of research across the ESCI community.

📚 We invite you to explore the Abstract Book and discover the work that will shape discussions, spark collaborations, and inspire new ideas throughout the meeting.

Lisbon is almost ready. And so is the science.

Final preparations are underway as ESCI prepares to welcome clinician-scientists, researchers, and collaborators from across Europe and beyond to .

In just a few days, lecture halls will fill with discussion. Posters will turn into dialogue. And ideas will evolve through exchange, challenge, and collaboration. What makes ESCI unique isn’t just the programme - it’s how the science is experienced. Through conversation, through connection, and through a shared commitment to advancing clinical investigation. 🧠

We are looking forward to a few days where disciplines meet, perspectives align, and new directions take shape. See you very soon in Lisbon! 🇵🇹

You notice it within the first session. ESCI feels different.

Not because it’s bigger or louder - but because of how people engage. At ESCI, discussions don’t end when the slide disappears. They continue in hallways, over coffee, and across disciplines. Ideas are questioned, refined, and often reshaped through real dialogue. 🧠

What defines this community is not just the science, but how it’s shared:
▪️ Conversations that go beyond presentation
▪️ A genuine openness to collaboration
▪️ Space for early-career researchers to contribute, not just observe
▪️ A network that connects clinical investigation across Europe and beyond

This is what ESCI has built over decades - a society where clinical research is not only presented, but actively discussed and moved forward.

📍Join us in Lisbon for and experience it for yourself.

The real challenge in research is not discovery alone - it’s translation.

At , the workshop “From Fundamental Discovery to Clinical Impact” brings together academia, clinicians, industry, and public participation to explore one essential question: how do we move promising science closer to patient care? 🔬

Through expert lectures and interdisciplinary discussion, this session will examine the path from laboratory findings to clinical application - including the barriers, opportunities, and strategic decisions that shape translational research today.

🧠 Speakers:
• João Cerqueira - From Discovery to Patient Care: Principles and Processes of Translational Research
• João Sargento Freitas - Turning Lab Discoveries into Testable Clinical Hypotheses

🤝 Round Table Discussion moderated by Paula Macedo and Harsh*tha Shanmugam, with contributions from:
• Nuno Sousa
• Maria Rita Dionísio
• Leonilda Bonfrate
• Marcel Twickler

In a few days, the conversations begin.

is almost here - and Lisbon is about to welcome clinicians, researchers, and scientists from across Europe and beyond.

What started months ago as planning, reviewing, and organising is now taking shape as a programme built on rigorous science and shared curiosity. Soon, abstracts will turn into discussions. Sessions will turn into collaborations. And ideas will move one step closer to clinical impact. 🧠

Safe travels to everyone joining us. We look forward to welcoming you in Lisbon!

Strong scientific communities are shaped by the people who step forward.

We are pleased to welcome Luís F. Grilo, PhD, as the new Young Research Councillor of ESCI. A researcher at the University of Coimbra, his work focuses on the mechanisms of cardiac ageing, combining molecular and multi-omics approaches to identify clinically relevant biomarkers. 🧬

With international experience across Europe and the United States, and involvement in major research initiatives, Luís brings a strong translational perspective to the role. His work has been recognised through competitive fellowships and publications in leading journals.

At ESCI, supporting early-career researchers means giving them a voice in shaping the future of clinical investigation.

We look forward to working together. 🤝
