Before we talk about progress, we need to ask who gets to define it.

At this year’s Talent for Good Forum, N’NINKIE will lead the breakout session Who Defines Development? Reframing Power, looking at whose knowledge shapes development and social work, and why locally rooted perspectives are still too often pushed aside.

Join us on 4 June at The Hague University of Applied Sciences, and find us at the N’NINKIE stand throughout the day.

What if the most important question in development is not how we develop, but who gets to define what development means in the first place?

Development is often framed through economics, infrastructure, technology, or governance. Yet sustainable development is ultimately about people: communities, participation, systems of care, and human dignity.

Our breakout session at the Talent for Good Forum explores the role of social work within sustainable development and invites us to rethink not only development itself, but also the power structures behind it.

Because what is considered “successful” development is never neutral. It is shaped by institutions, perspectives, and forms of knowledge — while locally grounded realities too often remain overlooked.

At N’NINKIE, we believe communities already hold knowledge. But whose knowledge is recognized as valid?

Join us at the Talent for Good Forum 2026 for our breakout session “Who Defines Development? Reframing Power” and visit us at the N’NINKIE stand throughout the day.
We look forward to exchanging ideas and conversations with you.

We’re excited to share that N’NINKIE will be part of the Talent for Good Forum 2026.

Since 2022, the Talent for Good Fair has been the Netherlands’ premier destination for mission driven careers.

The forum brings together organisations, ideas, and people working across peace, justice, development, and social impact. It is a space for exchange, learning, and meaningful connection.

As part of the afternoon program, N’NINKIE will lead a breakout session titled Who Defines Development? Reframing Power. The session invites participants to reflect on how development and social work systems often privilege Western frameworks while sidelining locally rooted knowledge and leadership, and to consider how education and institutions can better prepare students for realities beyond Western contexts.

Join us on 4 June 2026 at The Hague University of Applied Sciences for a day of conversations, workshops, panels, and opportunities to engage with work that aims to create lasting change.

On 27 April 1961, Sierra Leone became independent and began a new national chapter shaped by self rule, identity, and hope.

As Sierra Leone marks this day, we honour the strength, resilience, and vision of its people, past and present. Independence brought political freedom, but it did not dismantle the systems and inequalities shaped by colonial rule. Many of those structures still inform everyday realities today.

At N’NINKIE, we believe history matters not only in how it is remembered, but in how its legacy is carried forward through research, leadership, and community-rooted action

Behind N’NINKIE are people who believe that meaningful change begins within communities.

Co-founders Stella Rothenberger and Rugiatu Neneh Turay-Koroma come from different backgrounds and continents, but share a common vision: strengthening community-led solutions and amplifying African knowledge, leadership, and innovation.

Stella’s research in Sierra Leone challenges conventional development models and highlights the strength of Indigenous knowledge and culturally grounded approaches to social work.

Neneh, founder of the Amazonian Initiative Movement (AIM) and former Deputy Minister of Social Welfare, has spent over two decades advancing women’s rights and grassroots development in Sierra Leone.

Together, they founded N’NINKIE to help bridge research and practice, connect global perspectives, and support changemakers shaping progress from within.

Because sustainable change does not come from outside solutions alone, it grows from the knowledge, leadership, and commitment already present in communities.

If you believe in community-driven progress, support our work.

International Women’s Day is around the corner.

At N’NINKIE, we believe real change begins with women who know their communities best.

For more than 20 years, our co founder Rugiatu Neneh Turay has worked alongside women in Sierra Leone to support community led solutions that create opportunity, independence, and long term resilience.

One of these initiatives is the Rothumba Training Center, where women gain skills like tailoring and traditional gara tie dye to build their own livelihoods.

As we approach International Women’s Day, we invite you to be part of this story.

Support women in rural Sierra Leone by contributing to our project on betterplace.org.

Because when women gain opportunity, entire communities grow stronger.

Book of the Month

An African History of Africa
by Zeinab Badawi

What happens when history is told from within?

Zeinab Badawi retraces Africa’s story from deep prehistory to the present, centering African voices rather than colonial interpretations. The result is not a “revision” of history, but a restoration of perspective.

Africa has never been a passive backdrop to global events. It has shaped them.

At N’NINKIE, we believe that how we teach history influences how we imagine the future.

This is a powerful place to begin.

What does real independence require?

Serious investment in education.

Not only access, but relevance. Not only imported theory, but knowledge rooted in lived realities

When expertise is consistently defined from the outside, it doesn’t just sideline local knowledge. It shapes how innovation is imagined, and who is seen as capable of leading it.

Education is not just about degrees. It is about building the confidence, skills, and critical thinking needed to shape your own economy.

At N’NINKIE, we believe sustainable development begins in classrooms, research labs, and community learning spaces rooted in local realities.

Because when knowledge reflects people’s lived experience, innovation follows.
