Save the Tigris

Save the Tigris ST: advocates for water justice, uniting communities across the Mesopotamian basin for equitable, sustainable, and peaceful water use.

We are a civil society advocacy campaign aiming to save and protect the heritage and water resources of Mesopotamia from the impact of large dams and other mega projects, and to promote sustainable management of the Tigris River and its tributaries. Save the Tigris Campaign seeks to link groups and movements concerned with the adverse impacts of megaprojects on the Tigris and Euphrates. We ad

vocate for policies that secure the sustainable and equitable use of water for all who live in the region. Our campaign believes a paradigm shift is necessary: instead of being a source of rivalry, water could be force for peace and cooperation between all the countries and peoples of the Tigris-Euphrates basin. Our advocacy and awareness activities involve all relevant actors: local communities; civil society organisations; media; national and local institutions; societies of experts and intellectuals; research centres; universities and others. We provide a network where civil society organizations from Iraq, Turkey, Iran and Syria and international civil society organizations can mobilize together, express their solidarity and exchange knowledge and experiences to work on our objectives together. www.savethetigris.org

Public Statement

At a time when environmental challenges in Iraq are intensifying, we are witnessing with deep concern the targeting of environmental defenders, most recently, activist Murtadha Al-Janoubi in Maysan Governorate.

What is happening is not an isolated incident. It is a troubling indicator of shrinking constitutional freedoms and attempts to silence voices advocating for environmental and water justice.

Defending the Marshes is not a crime.
Demanding rights is not a threat to social peace.
It is a national and human duty.

We stand in solidarity with every free voice defending our environment and the future of coming generations. Protecting activists is both a legal and moral responsibility that must not be ignored.

Today, we stand at a critical crossroads—
a moment that calls on all of us to deeply reconsider the values and principles we claim to uphold.

For years, the Humat Dijlah has worked on water issues as a fundamental human right and a cornerstone of dignified life. Yet today, it has become clear that using water merely as a symbol for peacebuilding is not enough, unless it is also used as a real tool for solidarity with oppressed peoples.

Water justice cannot be separated from human justice, and true peace cannot be achieved without standing alongside those whose rights are violated and whose access to essential resources is denied.

Full solidarity with the people of Rojava.

After the Mesopotamia Water Forum: The Freedom of Rivers, the Peace of Peoples

Water is not just a natural resource — it is a source of peace, justice, and life.
The Second Mesopotamia Water Forum, held in Amed (Diyarbakır) from October 17–19, brought together voices from across Mesopotamia to discuss how rivers have become tools of power and control — and how they can once again become bridges of cooperation and coexistence.

As highlighted in the report by Rengin Azizoğlu for The Amargi, participants emphasized that “the free flow of water is the shared peace of peoples.”
Speakers and activists, including Ismaeel Dawood from Save the Tigris, called for People’s Water Diplomacy — a new form of collaboration led by civil society, where communities take part in shaping water governance, promoting justice, and restoring balance to nature.

From Amed to Basra, from Rojava to Sulaymaniyah, the message was clear:
🌍 Water should unite, not divide. Peace begins when rivers flow freely.
