We’re proud that Valérie Vion, WUWM General Secretary, spoke at the Future Food Forum (Dubai, 23–25 Sept.) on “Imagining Tomorrow’s Food Systems.” 🌍
She showcased how wholesale markets drive change worldwide:
🔹 Policy & Collaboration – Advocacy at continental level (e.g. FLAMA, FAO & UN → Int. Day of Fruits & Veg).
🔹 Food Security – Tackling food loss (e.g. CAR Rome saving “imperfect but edible” food).
🔹 Innovation – Digital tools, traceability, and WUWM’s new Working Group & Position Paper.
Her key message: wholesale markets are vital for resilient, sustainable & innovative food systems.

Fighting Food Waste, Supporting Sustainability 🌍🍏

Wholesale markets are taking action against food waste and driving sustainability across the globe:

✨ SF Market’s Food Recovery Program: Over 6.5 million pounds of food recovered, providing 5.4 million meals to Bay Area residents. During the pandemic, the market played a key role in providing food to vulnerable communities.

✨ Rungis Market: Partnering with SUEZ to double waste sorting and reduce its carbon footprint by 30% by 2030. Aiming for a more sustainable and eco-friendly future!

✨ SO.GE.M.I. Milan: The Foody Zero Waste Hub redistributes surplus food to charities, ensuring no good food goes to waste while supporting local communities.
✨ Mercabarna Barcelona: Redistributing fresh produce to food banks since 2002, helping reduce food waste and support local residents.

✨ Les Marmites Solidaires Marseille: Transforming 3,000 tonnes of surplus produce into soups, juices, and jams, while creating job opportunities and supporting the local economy.
These are just a few examples of how wholesale markets are leading the charge in sustainability and food recovery!

Today, WUWM’s General-Secretary Valérie Vion attended the inauguration of the Logistics Hub and Decarbonized Mobility at the MIN of Châteaurenard, one of our proud members. 🚛

The event started with a ribbon-cutting ceremony, launching this groundbreaking initiative toward sustainability.

Jérémie Becciu, Director of MIN, opened the event with a welcoming speech, followed by a video presentation by architect François de La Serre. Speeches from regional leaders included Marcel Martel, Mayor of Châteaurenard, Martine Vassal, President of the Bouches-du-Rhône Departmental Council, Renaud Muselier, President of Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur Region, and Cécile-Marie Lenglet, Sub-Prefect of Arles.
Each leader emphasized the collective commitment to a more sustainable future for the region. 🌱

WUWM cogratulates Jérémie Becciu and the MIN of Châteaurenard for leading the way in decarbonization and innovation in the wholesale market industry! 🌍✨
