US scientists: Now fully formed El Niño more likely than not to reach ‘very strong’ status

El Niño has officially developed, and it could become one of the most intense in recent years.

Scientists at the say there is now a 63% chance it will reach “very strong” status, meaning ocean temperatures could exceed key thresholds in the Pacific.

If that happens, the impacts could be significant — including shifts in rainfall patterns, with flooding in some regions and drought in others, often occurring at the same time.

events already influence global temperatures, but in today’s warmer climate, their effects can be stronger and more disruptive.

The focus now is on preparedness and early action, using improved forecasts to anticipate impacts and reduce risks.

Climate Centre joins new research network ‘to strengthen decision-making before and after crises’🤝🌍

The Climate Centre is joining a new global research partnership aimed at improving decision‑making before, during and after crises.

As risks become more interconnected, from extreme weather to health emergencies, this network will bring together science, tools and rapid-response expertise to better anticipate and manage impacts.

A key focus is understanding cascading risks and how people experience them, helping to design more effective early warning and response systems.

It’s another step toward bridging science and action — so decisions are faster, more informed, and grounded in real-world needs.

Heat Action Day 2026 Worldwide 🌍☀️

Heat Action Day continues to grow with over 100 Red Cross Red Crescent Movement components taking part worldwide this year.

In total, 109 Movement registrations and 213 from external organisations highlight how global momentum around extreme heat is building fast.

From community workshops to creative campaigns, the focus is simple: share practical, life‑saving actions to protect people from heat.

This year’s theme of indoor heat puts the spotlight on risks inside homes, schools and workplaces, where heat can be just as dangerous.

‘El Niño conditions will pour fuel on the fire of a warming world’ 🌍🔥

El Niño is expected to return in the coming months, and its impacts will be felt on top of already rising global temperatures.

UN Secretary‑General António Guterres warns that El Niño will intensify climate risks, making impacts stronger, faster, and more widespread across regions.

This includes an increased likelihood of heatwaves, droughts, heavy rainfall and flooding, affecting both people and ecosystems.

Forecasts suggest around an 80% chance of El Niño developing by August, with conditions likely continuing later into the year.

In a warmer world, these events don’t happen in isolation, they amplify existing vulnerabilities and risks.

🔥🌍 🌍🔥
Extreme heat isn’t only an outdoor risk.

For Heat Action Day 2026, the focus is on indoor heat — the dangers people face in homes, schools, workplaces, care facilities, transport hubs and other enclosed spaces.

Poor ventilation, limited cooling, building design and urban heat islands can all increase indoor temperatures, putting older people, children and people with health conditions at particular risk.

Simple actions can save lives: keep windows covered during the hottest hours, use cooler night air when possible, take cool showers, drink cold water, and check in on people who may need support.

This Heat Action Day, let’s help communities — indoors and out.
