Dear LUC Community,

Welcome (back) to LUC! We are extremely excited to kick off another year full of unforgettable events (e.g. the General Assembly ;)), committee endeavors, extravaganzas such as the Lustrum concert, Dies (First-Years will understand soon enough), UCSRN tournament, the Gala, and so much more! It is our mission to make YOUR year as memorable and fun as possible.

Dear incoming and current LUC students,

On behalf of the 2020-2021 Fortuna board, we would like to wish you a great upcoming year as part of the Fortuna community. First years are starting to move in and we are happy to welcome you to a program like no other in the Netherlands thanks in part to our student association Fortuna. Part of what makes Fortuna unique is that it has a breadth of different activities, all LUC students are automatically members and it is the heart of LUC extracurriculars.

Fortuna’s mission is to enrich your student lives, to broaden your horizons through the organization of extracurricular activities. It is made up of you Fortunians, committees and teams, who organize activities, events, meetings and training. Overall, we exist to offer a variety of different opportunities and to provide support to your ideas for a great LUC experience!

We hope Fortuna will enrich your life at LUC and that you find a great new home in the LUC community!

Love,
The 2020-2021 Fortuna Board

Edit: we have added a number of different student initiatives to this letter so you can find out what you can do to help and receive support from other students.

Dear Fortunians,

We are writing this post in the light of the current situation.

In the past two weeks, we have all been shocked by the horrifying death of George Floyd, who was needlessly killed by a US police officer on the 25th of May. Floyd’s tragic death is not only indicative of deep-rooted and wider systemic issues of racism in the United States and the rest of the world, but it also shows us that the black community and other people of colour are continuously fighting for their lives as a result of the injustices perpetrated against them which stems from centuries of oppression and discrimination. This event has sparked uprisings and protests in the United States and other parts of the world to fight against these issues.

We also know that many LUC students will be joining in these protests, wherever they may be during these difficult times. The Fortuna Board would like to express its support for our students and members who are actively trying to fight against the racist practices that exist in our society. Should you be interested in organizing an event for which you need logistical or financial support, do not hesitate to reach out to us. As an expression of our support, we are donating 250 USD to the Bail Project and another 250 USD to the Black Visions Collective from our Unannounced Events Fund and we actively encourage you to keep fighting these injustices and stay safe while doing so.

A number of different initiatives have been set up by LUC students, amongst which a support group by and for BIPOC students. Contact Shivalika Madgulkar for more information!

There are also petitions which you can sign. One petition is currently collecting signatures and seeks to address racism and discrimination at Dutch schools. Contact Jay Gietzelt or check out the posts below.

There will also be a town hall meeting Wednesday the 10th of June where students will be able to voice their concerns and grievances to the university. You can also contact Rumbidzo Dangarembizi for more information!

We wish you lots of strength during these difficult times.

With love,
The Fortuna Board
