The 12th Annual EMEA CHRIE (formerly EuroCHRIE) University Challenge 2026, delivered by Russell Partnership Technology in partnership with EMEA CHRIE, came to an exciting finish on March 19th.

This year’s challenge brought together 18 leading institutions from across the EMEA region:
Strathmore University (Kenya), Stenden University (South Africa), Budapest University of Economics & Business (Hungary), CETT Barcelona (Spain), Modul University (Austria), Hotel Management School Maastricht (The Netherlands), École Hôtelière de Lausanne (Switzerland), Odesa National University of Technology (Ukraine), Breda University of Applied Sciences (The Netherlands), Al Rayyan International University College (Qatar), University of Surrey (United Kingdom), Boma International Hospitality College (Kenya), Hotel Management School NHL Stenden (The Netherlands), Thomas More University of Applied Sciences (Belgium), Business Academy Copenhagen (Denmark), Özyeğin University Faculty of Applied Sciences (Türkiye), Dubai College of Tourism (United Arab Emirates), and FHWien der WKW (Austria).

Teams of three to five students, supported by one instructor, competed in a hospitality simulation challenge, managing their own hotels within competitive sets. Each week, participants developed and implemented strategic decisions focused on market performance, financial results, guest satisfaction, and associate engagement.

The competition involved 68 students representing 14 countries and 31 nationalities, highlighting the truly international nature of the initiative.

Following four weeks of intensive competition, the overall winner was the team from Hotel Management School NHL Stenden, with second place awarded to Business Academy Copenhagen.

In parallel, participants also completed a Certificate in Hospitality Business Acumen, combining online learning modules with weekly interactive sessions.

The EMEA CHRIE University Challenge continues to serve as a powerful platform for bridging academia and industry, fostering strategic thinking and practical skills in the next generation of hospitality professionals.

We would like to thank all participants, as well as Heidi Anaya, Head of Education at Russell Partnership Technology, for organising and moderating this truly outstanding and impactful competition.

Dear EMEA CHRIE Community,

We trust this message finds you well, wherever you are across our EMEA region.

Following our Spring Board Meeting last week, we are pleased to share a meaningful update with you. While the meeting was held online due to the current circumstances — where we had truly wished to gather in person in Dubai with our special hosts, the Dubai College of Tourism team - the spirit of the meeting remained passionate, connected, and truly inspiring.

We would like to take a moment to sincerely acknowledge and thank the Dubai College of Tourism team. Their enthusiasm, professionalism, confidence, and meticulous preparation were truly felt throughout. It is this level of dedication and care that reflects the very essence of our community.

Together, as the EMEA CHRIE Executive Committee and in close partnership with the Dubai College of Tourism team, we are proud, pleased, and grateful to share that the preparations for EMEA CHRIE 2026 are very much in full swing. With excitement and trust, we confirm that we are moving forward with EMEA CHRIE 2026 hosted by Dubai College of Tourism in November 2026 and are excited for the inspiring journey ahead.

We are, of course, all aware of the broader geopolitical context in which we are operating. At the same time, we hold faith in the opportunities that lie ahead. As a federation, we will continue to act with integrity and care — always placing safety and well-being at the forefront, and making decisions thoughtfully as circumstances evolve.

At the heart of hospitality and tourism lies a deep-rooted ability to serve, to connect, and to remain resilient and agile in times of change. It is exactly this spirit that guides us forward.

In the months leading up to November 2026, we are committed to maintaining transparent, clear, and encouraging communication with all of you. We warmly invite you to join us in this journey — to share in the excitement, to support the incredible EMEA CHRIE 2026 team, and to continue building our community together.

For the latest updates, including conference information, calls for papers, and key milestones, we kindly invite you to visit the EMEA CHRIE 2026 conference website (https://emeachrie2026.org/) and stay connected as the journey unfolds.

We are delighted to announce the EMEA CHRIE Research of the Month, “Why Being Present Matters: Enhancing Guest Experiences Through Socio-Cognitive Mindfulness,” authored by Valentina Clergue and Yasemin Oruc.

The article addresses a key question in hospitality: why do some guests leave a hotel feeling restored and eager to return, while others — despite similar conditions — leave indifferent?

While service quality, design and amenities matter, this study highlights something more fundamental: the guest’s state of mind.
Guests are often distracted — scrolling at breakfast, thinking about work during a spa treatment, or moving through a carefully designed space without noticing it. In such moments, even well-crafted experiences fail to resonate — not due to service failure, but because guests are not mentally present.

The study focuses on socio-cognitive mindfulness — being attentive, curious and engaged with one’s surroundings. Unlike meditative mindfulness, it requires no training and can be activated by the environment itself: a welcome message, a staff interaction, or a moment of intentional pause.
The findings show that mindful guests notice more, engage more deeply and experience greater well-being — which is not only an outcome, but also a precondition of a positive stay.

Across large-scale review analyses and an experiment, guests exposed to mindfulness cues reported higher satisfaction and stronger intention to return.

Practical implications are clear: staff can guide attention, environments can be designed to slow guests down and small prompts can significantly enhance the experience and long-term brand connection.

The key takeaway: experiences create value not simply by happening, but when they are truly noticed and remembered.

Dear EMEA CHRIE Community,

We trust this messages receives you well, wherever you are across our EMEA region.

In moments when parts of our world are marked by uncertainty and distress, we feel it is important to pause — not to comment, not to judge, and not to take positions — more to simply acknowledge the human impact such times can have on our colleagues, family, friends, students, and partners.

Recent developments in the Middle-East and the broader region may be affecting members of our community in personal and profound ways. As an international federation spanning Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, our network reaches across borders, cultures, and lived realities. Today, our thoughts are with all those who may be experiencing worry, disruption, or concern for their loved ones.

We wish to express, with sincerity and care, that your safety and well-being matter deeply to us. Please take the time and space you need to look after yourselves and those around you.

At its heart, hospitality is about humanity. It is about connection in times of calm and resilience in times of challenge. It is about responsibility, kindness, and care especially when circumstances feel fragile. As hospitality educators we are united in our shared commitment to these values.

We are guided by a quiet sense of meliorism – the belief that through collective goodwill, mindful action, and human decency, situations can be improved. In our field, this translated into a caring dialogue, sustaining collaboration and continuing to build bridges across cultures and perspectives.

We are also reminded, in moments like these, how meaningful it is that our federation operates across regions and cultures. Our strength lies in our diversity, our dialogue, and our capacity to remain connected — even when the world feels divided.

On behalf of the Executive Committee, please know that you are seen, valued, and held in our collective thoughts.

With respect,

EMEA CHRIE Executive Committee
Yasemin Oruc, President
Florian Aubke, Immediate Past President
Heidi Anaya, Vice-President
Ivan Ninov, Treasurer

We are delighted to announce the EMEA-CHRIE Research of the Month, featuring the study by Aarni Tuomi, Mark Ashton, Alexander Lennart Schmidt and Erin Chao Ling, published in Cornell Hospitality Quarterly. The article addresses a question many hospitality managers are now facing as service robots move beyond pilot projects and media attention: after the hype, should we continue using them?

Rather than focusing on initial adoption, the study shifts attention to a more critical and underexplored phase—the planned continuance or discontinuance of service robots. By extending the Technology–Organization–Environment (TOE) framework and drawing on in-depth interviews with hospitality decision-makers and robot suppliers, the authors show that robot related investment decisions are rarely binary or purely technology-driven. Instead, hospitality leaders evaluate robots based on a combination of operational feasibility, strategic fit, technological maturity, and financial sustainability.

The findings indicate that robots are more likely to be retained when they integrate smoothly into existing workflows, support rather than disrupt employees, and add clear value to the guest experience. In contrast, even technically reliable robots are often discontinued when they increase operational complexity, require excessive supervision, or deliver benefits that fade once the novelty wears off. Importantly, the study highlights that guest acceptance alone is not enough—acceptance by staff and managers is equally critical.

For management, the practical implications are substantial. Service robots should not be viewed as one-off innovation showcases or short-term marketing tools. Long-term success depends on fit, not fascination. Robots must align with the hotel’s service concept, brand promise, and day-to-day operations. If a robot disrupts service flow, creates coordination challenges, or adds hidden workload for employees, managers are likely to abandon it—even if the technology itself functions as intended.

The study also highlights the importance of setting realistic expectations from the outset. Hospitality businesses that adopt robots without clear strategic objectives, well-defined use cases, or measurable performance criteria are far more likely to be disappointed. By contrast, properties that deploy robots for specific purposes—such as repetitive back-of-house tasks, peak-time operational support, or contactless service touchpoints—are better positioned to justify continued investment.

Crucially, the research reminds managers to look beyond acquisition costs. Ongoing maintenance, system integration, staff training, supplier dependency, and continuous adaptation all shape the true economics of service robots. Key takeaway is not whether robots are the future of hospitality, but under what conditions they genuinely enhance service quality, operational efficiency, and long-term value creation.

🌍 A New Chapter Begins: Welcome to EMEA CHRIE

As we step into 2026, we officially begin a new chapter in our federation’s history.

EuroCHRIE has now fully transitioned into EMEA CHRIE — a name that truly reflects who we are and the region we serve: Europe, the Middle East, and Africa.

This transformation is the result of extensive collaboration, thoughtful discussion, and strong support from our community. It represents more than a change of name — it marks a renewed commitment to inclusivity, stronger regional connections, and continuous engagement across the EMEA region throughout the year.

We would like to express our sincere appreciation to Florian Aubke, President of EuroCHRIE during the previous term, who initiated and guided this important transformation. Our heartfelt thanks also go to the EuroCHRIE Board, the dedicated teams, and all members whose trust, feedback, and support made this transition possible.

Entering 2026 as EMEA CHRIE, we look ahead with confidence and ambition. New opportunities, new formats of collaboration, and new ways to connect our academic and industry communities are already taking shape.

✨ Coming soon: we will be announcing the location and dates of the EMEA CHRIE 2026 Conference, our first conference under the EMEA CHRIE name.

Thank you for being part of this journey.
