📣New Podcast Episode is Out!🎙️

In support of International Boys' Day (16th May, 2026), members of the Sexual Violence team at Centre for African Justice, Peace and Human Rights join Dr. Jerome Teelucksingh, founder of International Boys Day, to discuss the challenges boys face in different societies today.

Episode 7 of Destigmatising Justice with Dr. Jerome Teelucksingh, explores fatherhood, the importance of positive male role models, and the influence of social media in raising awareness and shaping public conversations around boys’ wellbeing.

The conversation further addresses difficult but important issues, including toxic masculinity, gender roles, definitions of r**e, and the often overlooked reality of conflict-related sexual violence against men and boys, including stigma, underreporting, and the lack of public recognition for male survivors. While also highlighting the role families, schools, communities, and policymakers can play in better protecting boys, supporting survivors, and creating more inclusive conversations around boys’ rights and wellbeing.

📣Excited to share the release of our recent podcast episode! 🎙️

In the 6th episode of ‘Destigmatising Justice with Christoph Sodemann’, members of the Sexual Violence Team at the Centre for African Justice, Peace and Human Rights join Christoph Sodemann to discuss the making of the documentary ‘Weapon of War: Sexual Violence against Men’ and the motivations behind documenting conflict-related sexual violence against men and boys.

This important conversation highlights the widespread yet often invisible nature of sexual violence against male survivors in conflict settings, including the impact of stigma, shame, and fear of being associated with homosexuality.

We reflect on conflicts such as the Srebrenica Genocide and the war in Ukraine, Christoph Sodemann explores how these events shaped public understanding of sexual violence against men and the urgent need for greater recognition of male survivors.

The episode further examines the ethical and practical challenges of interviewing survivors, from re-traumatisation and confidentiality to legal risks and survivor protection, while discussing how journalism, documentaries, and social media can help bring more attention to these experiences and push for recognition in public and policy discussions.

📣 Today, the Centre for African Justice, Peace and Human Rights (CAJPHR) observes International Boys’ Day, also known as the International Day of the Boy Child - a day dedicated to focusing on boys and their wellbeing.

Founded by Dr. Jerome Teelucksingh, a Historian and Senior Lecturer in History at the University of the West Indies, the day highlights the challenges boys face globally and the positive contributions they bring to their families and communities. Research continues to show that boys are more likely to experience educational disadvantage, violent crime, and conflict-related sexual violence. Yet, boys remain invisible in conversations around protection, justice, and recovery.

Too often, the boy is forgotten in the context of conflict-related sexual violence and violent crime; this needs to be recognised and addressed to successfully empower boys and their well-being. At CAJPHR, we stand with boys and men affected by violence, conflict-related sexual violence and injustice by advocating for protection, justice and accountability.

This conversation continues in our upcoming podcast episodes titled ‘Destigamatising Justice - A Podcast on Conflict-Related Sexual Violence Against Men and Boys’, Christoph Sodemonn joins the Sexual Violence team to discuss the making of his documentary ‘Weapon of War: Sexual Violence against Men and the realities of conflict-related sexual violence against men and boys.’

Furthermore, an important conversation unravels with the founder of International Boys’ Day, Dr. Jerome Teelucksingh, bringing insight on fatherhood and male role models, toxic masculinity, and the overlooked issue of conflict-related sexual violence against men and boys.

Every boy deserves safety, dignity, support, and the opportunity to thrive!

IT'S HERE! Cycle of Change: Menstrual Equity for Education is now out.

Every month, cycles move quietly, but there are injustices that should never be cyclical.

The Right to Quality Education Team from the Centre for African Justice, Peace, and Human Rights is working to improve hygiene conditions and access to clean water in Matinza Primary School, which are key foundations for safe, dignified menstruation and for students' ability to stay in school. In recognition of World Water Day (22 March) we're launching our new magazine, Cycle of Change: Menstrual Equity for Education. This magazine was born from listening closely: to research, to lived experiences, and to voices that refuse silence. It shows how menstruation is not a footnote—it shapes access to education, health, and the future itself.

Inside these pages, you'll find stories that open eyes, conversations that stay with you, and realities that demand action. All with one clear message: menstrual equity is not charity. It's a human right.

Oreoluwa Ojo reflects on engaging boys and men as allies in menstrual health advocacy, while Emaediong Akpan amplifies community voices from across Africa, showing how grassroots initiatives are breaking the silence around periods. A quiz invites readers to test what they really know about menstruation, and our team shares recommendations for books, podcasts, and apps to keep learning. Through poetry, Chukwufum Nanya offers a powerful reflection on the first period, and Dr. Fatumo Abdi explores how menstrual health and the fight against FGM are central to gender equality in Africa. Finally, Alice Zanoli brings together global stories of menstruation; from Russia to India, Ghana, China, and Argentina, revealing how silence, stigma, and resilience connect experiences around the world.

Read it. Share it. Talk about it.
Change doesn't start loudly, it starts together.

April 16th marked the important International Day Dedicated to Protecting Boys from Sexual Violence, also known as Blue Umbrella Day.

The Centre for African Justice, Peace and Human Rights supports this day and stands in solidarity with survivors, advocates, and communities working to end sexual violence against boys and ensure that every child is protected, heard and supported.

One in six boys experiences sexual violence, and the barriers to speaking out are high.
These barriers may be even higher in cases of Conflict-Related Sexual Violence (CRSV). Blue Umbrella Day has found that boys who experience sexual violence are far less likely than girls to ask for help, more likely to have problems in future relationships, and are negatively impacted physically and mentally.

In conflict, displacement, and institutional settings, boys are excluded from protection frameworks because of prevailing ideas about masculinity, making it difficult to report and assess the true extent of harm. Harmful ideas surrounding masculinity and shame mean that many never disclose what has happened to them. It is therefore essential to understand that sexual violence affects boys too. The long-term consequences for boys’ wellbeing can be profound and are felt across society.

The Sexual Violence team at CAJPHR aims to break down these stigmas and dismantle the structures that sustain them through advocacy, research, and awareness. One way they promote this work is through their podcast, where previous episodes have explored the importance of destigmatising justice. In Episode 2: Destigmatising Justice with Glenn Miles and Jarrett Davis, a powerful message is shared: “You don’t have to be strong just because you’re a boy. Strength can involve tears.” From discussing child development and protection training to exploring how education and awareness can prevent exploitation. The episode further sheds light on empowering children with tools to prevent abuse, adapting protection measures for conflict zones, and addressing the unique vulnerabilities of boys and men, who are often overlooked in these contexts.

The 21st of March marks the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. The Centre for African Justice, Peace and Human Rights (CAJPHR) recognises and supports this important day.

This year also marks 60 years since the day was first observed, following the Sharpeville Massacre. It remains a powerful reminder of the consequences of racial injustice and the ongoing need to address discrimination in all of its forms.

CAJPHR stands against racism, discrimination, and xenophobia in all of its forms across society. Racism must not be tolerated and requires a collective action to be eliminated.
