Evening art lecture, organised by Nanda, was great as always. The lecture provided an insight into the achievements of one of the most influential women in Chinese imperial history. From a comparatively low position as a consort rising to Empress in 1861, Cixi preserved and revitalised imperial rule in China.
The lecture was provided by The Arts Society The Hague. For 33 years, it has given lectures on a wide-ranging variety of aspects of the Arts, and in 2024-2025 season this tradition continues.
The lecturer, David Rosier, is a freelance lecturer and accredited Arts Society Lecturer specializing in The History, Arts and Culture of Imperial China. His presentation was really interesting, knowledgeable, and entertaining. The lecturer answered questions after, and by the questions asked by the audience it was obvious how people were really interested in the subject.

January’s Cheap and Cheerful brought the IWC women to the Rotterdam Kunsthal. We were treated to a guided tour of the exhibition DIVA.
What is a Diva? Webster defines a Diva as 1) a glamorous and successful female performer and 2) someone who can be difficult to please and behaves as if they are very special or important. This duality is not always present. The Exhibition Diva features the beginning and evolution of the Diva. The exhibition begins with opera star Adelina Patti , followed by burlesque and dance artists like Josephine Baker, to the present day pop Divas like Lady Gaga and Beyonce. What the exhibition also demonstrated is the importance these artists had on cultural and social matters of their times. Topics touched upon are suffrage, women’s equality in pay and self-management, black equal rights, mental health, and LGBTQ rights, to name a few.
The tour guide was knowledgeable and gave an extra dimension to the exhibition.
Personally, I feel this exhibition is wonderful and well worth seeing. I feel the enthusiasm for the exhibition was certainly shared by all.
This was followed by a walk through a lovely park towards our next designation, the Bazar Restaurant. The restaurant was not a disappointment in its name and tasty food. It looked like a colourful Bazar from northern Africa filled with mirrors and colourful materials. The food was Mediterranean and delicious.

What a wonderful Country Morning we had today with our club! Nice cultural programme presented by the Embassy of Morocco to The Netherlands. History, culture, craft and fashion, music, and tasty couscous with other traditional delicious Moroccan dishes. Thank you so much to our Programme Officer Marinette! We had so many members at the meeting. The day of nice talks, seeing familiar faces, making nice arrangements for future activities. Great day to spend with club friends!

CHEAP and CHEERFUL news
In November our Cheap & Cheerful group went to The Rietveld Schröder house in Utrecht. It
was my first outing with the group, but definitely not the last.
I will write a few words about my personal impressions.
The Rietveld Schröder house is a wonderful small museum listed in the UNESCO Heritage List
and one of the famous iconic houses in the world. Every detail of the house is a shining
manifesto of De Stijl and modernist living. Every detail is thought through, not only from a
design point of view but from practicality and comfort as well. The small house is full of light
because of huge windows that can be opened wide to let the light and nature in. Everything
in the house can be transformed; sliding walls, folding doors that transform the big open day
space into cozy sleeping rooms. Movable blinds can serve as a table during the day and light
blockers at night. Even the colours of the floor emphasize the purpose of each space and
lead you through the house. Every free corner is well organized with hidden shelves, drawers
and secret storage. And of course the famous recognizable pieces of Rietveld furniture, his
chairs, lamps and tables are on display. Red, blue and yellow elements add joy to black and
white interiors. Even the shoe covers for the visitors are made in the Rietveld colours.
We had a wonderful guide whom we listened to with open mouths and you can see that on
the photo! We enjoyed a great lunch afterwards. We were so passionate about the food and
conversation that I forgot to take photos of the lunch.
Thank you so much to Lu See and Lalith for organising this event!

Our regular Monthly Meeting in January will have a very special speaker. Hélène Pichon, author of "The Eternal to the Feminine" will speak about Parity in the leadership of the three monotheistic religions.
I asked ChatGPT what this lecture will be about. The answer was: "The lecture on Parity in the leadership of the three monotheistic religions—Judaism, Christianity, and Islam—will explore the concept of gender equality within the religious leadership structures of these faiths. It will examine historical roles of men and women in religious authority, the theological interpretations that shape these roles, and contemporary movements advocating for greater parity. The discussion may also address the impact of cultural contexts on leadership and the ongoing debates about women's rights in religious practices".
Sound really interesting!
After the meeting we will toast the New Year!
If you are not a member of our IWC yet, you can come to this event as a guest for 10€ guest fee. Visit our website and drop us a message.
See you Monday, 13 January!

Dear members, followers and friends! Do you write a resolution list for the coming year? Yes, I do. The list is normally long and challenging. But I didn't expect the last paragraph will be so difficult for me. It is about bringing our FB club page back to life.
A few hours before the year turns to 2025, I am here to congratulate you all with New 2025 Year!
On behalf of the board I wish you all peaceful, healthy, interesting and eventful year! I hope this year will be full of friendship, interesting meetings, inspiration and events.
Big thank you to all volunteers, activity coordinators, all of you who supported the board in the efforts to make our Club so great!
Happy New Year and see you soon!
