The South East Asian Region Pharmaceutical (SEARPharm) Forum has launched a new initiative, “Empowering community pharmacists for non-communicable diseases (NCDs)”, in India, with a focus on strengthening pharmacists' role in the prevention and management of hypertension and diabetes.

33 community pharmacy owners from Goa completed training based on FIP resources, gaining skills in hypertension screening, patient counselling, adherence support, referral pathways and health promotion in March 2026. Participants also received practical service delivery toolkits and ongoing technical support.

The initiative reinforces the message “Think Health, Think Pharmacy”, highlighting the important role pharmacists play in improving access to care and supporting healthier communities. Further training programmes are planned across India in the coming months.

The growing global importance of surgical pharmacy was highlighted by FIP president Paul Sinclair during an interview with China Medical Tribune at the event "Pharmacy breaking through: Building a global ecosystem together", held in Hangzhou in April.

Mr Sinclair noted that, due to the unique pathophysiological needs of surgical patients, surgical pharmacy has developed into a distinct and well-established specialty. He also recognised prof. Zhi-hua Zheng, founder of surgical pharmacy, for driving a significant advancement in pharmacy practice in China by positioning surgical pharmacists as integral members of the surgical team, working alongside surgeons and anaesthesiologists.

FIP has awarded its Seal to GuangDong Pharmaceutical Association’s surgical pharmacy training programme, recognising it as an important clinical innovation.
Col Zheng-Yu Chen, FIP China Envoy, added that global partners will deepen collaboration to promote the Chinese model and help build a safer and more efficient pharmaceutical care ecosystem for patients.
