What does it take to build a pharmacy workforce that is prepared for the healthcare needs of tomorrow?

Hosted by the Malaysian Pharmacists Society (MPS), the MPS–WPPF Future of Pharmacy Forum 2026 and the MPS National Pharmacists Convention 2026 in July provided an opportunity to advance the ongoing MPS–FIP collaboration on pharmacy workforce intelligence.

As part of the collaboration, E. Lyn Lee, MPS–FIP research fellow, and Nisa Masyitah, FIP lead for workforce intelligence, shared findings from the Pharmacy Workforce Satisfaction Study, followed by focus group discussions that provided deeper qualitative insights into the experiences and perspectives of Malaysian pharmacists across sectors.

In August, these insights were brought forward through a series of high-level engagements held at IMU University, Bukit Jalil. The engagements brought together MPS, FIP, the Ministry of Health Malaysia, and pharmacy school leaders. FIP was represented by Prof Ian Bates, director, FIP Global Pharmaceutical Observatory, and Ms Masyitah.

Key highlights included:
- Progress review of the MPS–FIP Pharmacy Workforce Satisfaction Study and insights from the NPC2026 focus groups
- Strategic conversations with senior MOH representatives on workforce intelligence, research governance and future national
competency studies
- The PRESTIGE public sharing session, where Prof. Bates shared global perspectives on improving universal health care through
pharmacy workforce and science
- A roundtable with the deans of pharmacy schools on workforce challenges, academia–practice collaboration, capacity building
and the FIP–UNESCO UNITWIN Centre of Excellence (Western Pacific)
- Discussions to shape the direction and action plans for the Malaysia National Competency Standard Study

These engagements reinforced the importance of building a strong evidence base for Malaysia’s pharmacy workforce. They also highlighted the value of translating this evidence into meaningful action across practice, education and health-system development.

Community pharmacists are well placed to improve access to skin health services, but greater investment in education, guidance and system support is needed to enable them for their full potential. A new FIP insight board report, launched today, draws on the FIP Multinational Needs Assessment Programme (MNAP) and 142 responses from pharmacists across 51 countries: https://www.fip.org/file/6549.

Key findings showed that 85.9% of respondents manage skin-related queries daily or several times a week, and confidence is highest for acne, eczema and scalp conditions, and lower for skin cancer warning signs, psoriasis and cancer treatment-related skin effects. Ultimately, key barriers include limited guidance, unclear referral pathways and insufficient remuneration.

An overview of the pharmacy profession in Ghana is shared in a new FIP case study shared today: https://www.fip.org/file/6638. The report explores pharmacists' role in healthcare delivery, workforce capacity, education and professional development, regulatory developments, and efforts to improve access to medicines and pharmacy services. Developed in collaboration with the Pharmaceutical Society of Ghana - PSGH, the profile offers insights into the country’s pharmacy landscape and its ongoing development.
