Institute for Historical Justice and Reconciliation

Institute for Historical Justice and Reconciliation “Ethnic” and “religious” disputes frequently stem from the unsettled—and often distorted—legacies surrounding past events.

The IHJR was founded in the belief that addressing contentious or disputed historical legacies can promote understanding, tolerance and reconciliation in divided societies and contribute toward peace-building processes. Discrepancies in the historical memories of “enemy” groups alienate them from one another and preclude the development of any common understanding or empathy. The IHJR facilitates

joint projects between scholars, artists, educators and conflict stakeholders, bringing regional myth-making processes out into the open. History becomes a meaningful tool for the pursuit of peace. So far, IHJR projects have taken place in regions as diverse as Turkey-Armenia, the Western Balkans, the Middle East and Kenya. They have resulted in a series of highly-regarded publications and events which have engaged educators, students, politicians and NGOs worldwide. In 2012, the IHJR’s publications on the Middle East were featured by The Independent in its list of the year’s best history books.
