In this episode, former EuroClio president Dean Smart looks back on a long career as a history teacher, teacher trainer and member of the EuroClio community since 2002. He talks about how early school experiences and the Schools History Project shaped his idea of good history teaching. He explains how working in a diverse inner-city school and then meeting colleagues across Europe widened his perspective. Dean Smart also shares his worries about education today: the focus on measurable results like PISA, over-regulation that limits teachers’ creativity, and growing nationalism and “othering”.

EuroClio invited six educators across Europe to adapt the Monument(al) Challenges toolkit to their own local contexts, each centred on one contested monument linked to their national curriculum.

The result is six classroom-ready lesson plans, available in English and the local language, covering:

EuroClio and partners are looking for a marketing agency to help the reach of the Critical History Tours project, an Erasmus+ initiative on training for inclusive, critically engaged heritage walking tours across Europe.

What you will do:
- Promote lectures, a workshop and a course
- Grow the newsletter list (1,000+ new subscribers)
- Launch the CHT podcast 'Off the Beaten Past: Becoming an Intentional Tourist in Europe'
- Improve the website's SEO and searchability

You need experience in cultural, heritage or education marketing, plus Zoho (Forms, Campaigns, CRM), WordPress and Google Ads.

Help young people tell Europe what school should be!

“What powers you?” EuroClio and the History Co:Lab have launched a survey with this exact question for young people, all over Europe. It asks what education gives them and what is missing. Registrations for the Slow Thinking with Europeana Webinar are open!

Educators looking for fresh, practical classroom strategies are warmly invited to this interactive online session with tried-and-tested tips for working with photographs, paintings, posters, book covers, illustrations, film stills and other visual materials across subjects. Through engaging examples and hands-on activities, we will explore how slowing down and looking more closely at such images can help learners notice details, ask better questions, support ideas with evidence, make connections and reconsider first impressions.

📌 European Seminar on Teaching about the Roma and Sinti Holocaust - Call for Participants!
19-21 November 2026 in Heidelberg, Germany

How do we teach a genocide that is still too often left out of the classroom? EuroClio and the Council of Europe Roma and Travellers Division are pleased to invite history and citizenship educators to three days of lectures, workshops and peer learning activities, including a guided tour of the Documentation and Cultural Center of German Sinti and Roma.

The event is part of the joint project “Roma Holocaust Remembrance and Education” between the European Union and Council of Europe, and is organised in cooperation with the University of Heidelberg’s Research Centre on Antigypsyism, the Observatory on History Teaching in Europe and the European Roma Institute for Arts and Culture.
The Seminar welcomes up to 30 history and citizenship educators based in Europe.

Interested in taking part in the EuroClio Regranting Scheme?
This year, you can apply for two types of Grants:
- Cooperation Grants: This support to EuroClio Full Member organisations based in the European Union is given to facilitate member-to-member activities. In total, 6 cooperation grants will be awarded as a lump sum of 6.000 €.
- Dissemination Grants: This support to EuroClio Full Member organisations based in the European Union is given to either work with EuroClio to create educational resources from an already selected pool (https://drive.google.com/.../1EhgdMfMSJXpVHBvkFoPO1K.../view), ready to use in their context, or to join the train-the-trainer event taking place in The Hague from October 23 to 24. Applicants must specify which of the two activities they wish to participate in. In total, 4 financial support grants will be awarded as lump-sum payments of 3.000 €.

Applications are accepted on a rolling basis until October 09, 2026, or until all Grants have been awarded. All activities should be finalised by 30 November 2026. The initiative, built around Project Zero’s Thinking Routines, is now looking for participants to its first series of Online Peer Learning Activities. The five webinars, conceived to get to know the protocols better, are taking place online on:

With this series, we want to continue helping fellow colleagues support their students to think critically and ethically about history through the use of Project Zero’s Thinking Routines. For those who are new to the concept, they are simple, flexible methods to make students’ reasoning visible. In turn, this helps them (and you!) analyse their thoughts and develop a connection towards a more critical and multi-perspective way of historical thinking.

Yesterday, 5 October, was World Teachers' Day. It is a day to celebrate how teachers are transforming education and to reflect on the support they need to fully deploy their talent and vocation, and to rethink the way ahead for the profession globally.

This year's edition carries extra weight: it marks 60 years since the 1966 ILO/UNESCO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers.

Six decades on, new challenges have emerged for the profession, from digital technologies and climate change to inclusion, migration and displacement. These pressures affect several dimensions and the status of teachers: their symbolic status, when teaching is not sufficiently recognised or valued; their professional status, shaped by limited autonomy, support or voice in policy making; and their material status, compromised by salaries, workloads and working environments. With these shifts in mind, UNESCO is revising the Recommendation.

This year's theme says it best: "Standing with teachers: 60 years of protecting the profession, advancing its status and shaping our futures."
