Ever wondered what life after LUC might look like? Meet Emma de Ruiter, Class of 2020, who has built an exciting and impactful career in journalism.
Her journey started with a journalism class at LUC, where she discovered her passion for the field. After graduating with a major in World Politics, Emma pursued a master’s in journalism at the University of Groningen, interned in Berlin, and freelanced for several magazines. Today, she works as a headlines journalist at Euronews in Brussels, producing 24/7 news for TV and online platforms.
Emma thrives in the environment of the newsroom, where every day brings a new challenge. She is passionate about topics that stand at the intersection of politics and news. When thinking about her next steps, she is ambitious about going into investigative journalism.
What drives her most? Producing news people can trust in an age of misinformation. “Journalism has an important role in society, and I hope we can ensure it stays that way,” she says.
Looking back, her LUC experience was key preparation for her career. LUC’s interdisciplinary learning program, which stimulates critical thinking, shaped how she approaches journalism today. Furthermore, she really values the skills-based journalism courses through which she originally discovered her passion.
Emma’s story shows the value of being open to new things. Sometimes, a single class can spark a lifelong passion.
