I am an ambassador for Kinderzwerfboek (www.kinderzwerfboek.nl). Our mission is to provide free books to children all over the Netherlands, through the 5,000+ "little libraries” in schools, community centers, on sidewalks, etc. When the war in Ukraine began, it became equally important to provide books to the Ukrainian children, in their own language, who were forced to flee to other parts of Euro
pe. That was the start of this project, Books for the Youngest Ukrainian Refugees. With the money raised here, my team and I will provide Ukrainian-language picture books to Ukrainian children in European refugee hostels, schools, host families, and hospitals. We've joined forces with the Ukrainian Embassies in the Netherlands and Belgium, as well as the Ukrainian Book Institute in Kiev, to print and distribute a selection of colorful, familiar Ukrainian children's books. The first 10,000 books are underway, and we plan to order 5,000 more. The cost of printing is only 1 euro per book, so that even small donations will help us achieve our goal. As mentioned above, we are currently working with the Ukrainian Book Institute and the Ukrainian Embassies in the Netherlands and Belgium. The UBI supplies layouts and contractual material, so that books can be printed according to demand. Our funds will be used to pay for that process. The Embassies have organized storage and distribution, which will be done by a group of energetic volunteers in Amsterdam. About the campaign organizer
In addition to my work for Kinderzwerfboek, I am a literary translator, specializing in Dutch, Czech and Hungarian. Originally from New York, I moved to the Netherlands in 1980 and have lived here ever since. I began working for Kinderzwerfboek in September, 2021, as "ambassador to the Hague."
