On the occasion of Science activities at Europeana this year, we’d like to invite you to take part in our Science Transcribathon Run this summer, together with Europeana Transcribe, the crowdsourcing platform for European cultural heritage. The Run will take place between 15 June and 30 September.

For this run, we have selected a number of scientific letters, research documents and manuscripts to transcribe, enrich and describe, including works of the naturalists Alexander von Humboldt and Carl Friedrich Kielmeyer, and many more!

Looking for design inspiration that doesn't look like everyone else's?

Three nostalgic design trends are having a major moment, and they all draw from cultural heritage: trinket design, future medieval and neoclassical revival.

Our latest tutorial walks you through what each trend is, what it looks like, and exactly how to recreate it using Europeana's collections - free to use and full of images you simply won't find on stock sites.

✂️ Trinket design: treat your canvas like a display case, arrange objects in archive-like grids 🏰 Future medieval: sacred-looking visuals, illuminated borders, mythic beasts layered into modern contexts 🖼️ Neoclassical revival: use real Baroque paintings as backgrounds for a sense of luxury and history

The best part? Over 30 million items on Europeana are freely usable. All you need to do is search, download and create.

Today marks 100 years since Antoni Gaudí died in Barcelona.

He spent his final years devoted entirely to the Sagrada Família, a building he knew he would never see completed. A man of action, not words, as he said himself in 1913: "My hours have been spent in my work."

We've gathered 40 items from his life and buildings in a dedicated gallery on Europeana, from the Sagrada Família to the floor tiles of Casa Milà, designed with octopuses, snails and starfish. Because for Gaudí, nature was everywhere.

🌊 Under the sea, survival is a team sport.

Coral reefs are home to at least 25% of all ocean species, and the relationships keeping them alive are stranger and more clever than you might think. Chemical distress signals, mutually beneficial living arrangements, toxins as armour.

Explore how underwater species have adapted for survival, and what symbiosis really looks like in practice. This post would not have been possible without contributions from the Wellcome Collection!

🌍 Today is World Environment Day. It's a moment to ask ourselves what signal we're sending back to a planet in crisis.

Some people respond with action. Some with science. Some with words.

The Europeana Climate Action Community acknowledges that climate change is an emergency and believes that cooperative action is required to reverse this momentum. By inviting writers to create new works reflecting or inspired by cultural heritage material, we offer ideas, hopes for our futures, and potential directions for us all to think further about.

Humans - and our planet itself - are adaptable. There is time to change. There is still opportunity to engage society in this crisis and show what humans are capable of in coming together and evoking change.

For the Europeana Creative Climate Action Award, we asked participants for up to 500 words of creative writing, fiction or poetry inspired by one or more of the images in our Europeana Creative Climate Action Award gallery, curated by the Europeana Climate Action Community. The winners and the images that inspired them are published in this exhibition.

The results are quietly powerful.

🚲 Happy World Bicycle Day!

The UN declared today to celebrate the bicycle as a simple, affordable, clean and sustainable means of transport, and honestly, Europeans have needed no convincing. Our collections are full of proof.

We've gathered 66 images of bikes and bikers from across Europeana: portraits, caricatures, race photographs and countryside rides. Turns out the love for cycling is very well documented!

Are you involved in preparing, managing, or delivering cultural heritage metadata for publication on Europeana.eu? If you're a cultural heritage professional, data provider, or aggregator, you know that the quality of your metadata is key to making your collections findable, usable, and impactful.

Join our training course on the Europeana METIS Sandbox. The Metis Sandbox is a test environment for your data. It consists of a set of tools with which you can simulate ingesting and running the Metis workflow on your data, see what your records would look like on Europeana.eu, and get insight into the quality of your records.

During the training, you’ll mostly be working with data that we have prepared specifically for the purpose of this training. But you will also have the possibility to run your own data and analyse the results. If you are interested, please prepare a collection of at most 50 records that satisfy EDM specifications.

The training will take place online on Zoom and will not be recorded. You will receive a link a few days before the training. Each training is an intensive and interactive exercise.

Whether you're preparing a new dataset or looking to improve existing records, this course will help you generate better visibility and greater engagement for your institution’s collections. Order your FREE ticket now! https://pretix.eu/Europeana-Foundation/metissandbox-june2026/
