3-year anniversary of the UNGA resolution that enabled the ICJ AO! 🎉

Yesterday, it was 3 years ago that the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) adopted the resolution proposed by the government of Vanuatu to request the climate change advisory opinion (AO) from the International Court of Justice (ICJ)! We were there in New York City when more than 130 States voted YES for climate justice by voting YES for the resolution, which became the first UNGA resolution for an advisory opinion to be adopted by consensus. 🥳

While we made sure to celebrate the anniversary of this historic moment, we cannot reminisce too long, as the vote for the upcoming UNGA resolution to endorse the ICJ advisory opinion is coming soon! We and others are working hard to obtain a similar outcome for this new resolution, and created a web page with the latest information on the resolution and how you can help in this process: wy4cj.org/unga-resolution (link also in bio). Because the ICJ AO affirmed the obligations of polluters to take more climate action, we need ALL your help to prevent them from reinterpreting the groundbreaking climate ruling from the world's highest court.

🚀 Let's make the 2nd UNGA resolution vote as historic as the first one!

As we say goodbye to 2025 and step into a new year, we want to take a moment to look back at everything we have achieved together! 💫

The highlight of our year was the moment we have all been waiting for: the delivery of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) advisory opinion (AO)! 🏛️ After years of campaigning, dreaming and tireless advocacy from youth all over the world, the world’s highest court has finally affirmed the legal obligations of States to protect our climate system.

We also celebrated the delivery of the Inter-American Court of Human Rights (IACtHR) advisory opinion in Latin America ⚖️🌎 This ruling has provided essential legal tools for the region and strengthened the global narrative that climate change is a fundamental human rights issue!

Throughout the year, our campaigners spread these messages globally: to Paris for the ChangeNOW summit; to New York for NYC Climate Week; to Nice, France for the third United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC3); and to, among others, Arnhem, the Netherlands, and Signapore for Local Conferences of Youth (LCOY).

Beyond these major events, 2025 was a year of connection and discussion. We hosted numerous webinars and conferences, both online and face-to-face, bringing together legal experts, activists and students from every corner of the world. 💻🤝 These spaces allowed us to share our mission, knowledge, strategise, and build a bigger community that is needed to hold governments accountable.
At the same time, we have welcomed many new members to our regional fronts, and seeing our movement grow gives us much hope for the future!

Thank you for being with us through every meeting, every march and every legal breakthrough. The law is now on our side. In 2026, we will make sure it is enforced! ✊🌿

⏮️ 2025 RECAP: our South Asian Climate Justice Camp!

After a short social media hiatus after a busy COP30, we are back again to look back at some of the special events that took place in 2025, such as the South Asian Climate Justice Camp our Nepalese Front co-organised with Youth Action for Sustainable and Eco Nepal (YASEN)! ✨

From 29 to 31 August, we co-created a collaborative space at the Annapurna Eco Village in Astham, Nepal that brought youth, activists, community leaders and experts together to discuss urgent issues on climate justice and to provide youth participants with adequate knowledge on climate justice, the International Court of Justice and its climate advisory opinion (ICJ AO), climate finance, loss & damage, and advocacy. 55 young people from Nepal, India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Bhutan and the Maldives, participated and prepared a Declaration on Climate Justice trough the Ekota platform and policy-focused sessions.

🌿Capacity-building sessions such as this one ensure that many youth climate justice activists gain a deeper understanding of the ICJ advisory opinion and become better equipped for their policy and advocacy efforts. A full implementation of the ICJ's climate ruling requires people with thorough understanding of the ICJ AO, which is why organising more capacity-building programs is one of our goals for 2026.

✨ Please consider donating at wy4cj.org/donate to help us organise such capacity-building sessions, and/or email [email protected] if you can possibly support our efforts in different ways.

We’ve wrapped up an incredible first week at ! 🌍 From powerful discussions on youth-led climate litigation to strategising on implementing the ICJ’s advisory opinion, we’re so excited to be here!

As you all know, this COP is the first one since the International Court of Justice delivered its landmark climate ruling, the , in the summer of this year! This opinion carries the significant legal and moral authority of the world’s highest court, and we’re here to ensure governments listen.

If you haven’t had the chance to connect with them yet, come find our amazing campaigners on the ground in Belém – Samira, Henrieke, Nicole, Mariana, and Jule – to say hello! 👋 They are here to uphold the message that States have a legal obligation to protect our climate and present ambitious plans to keep the temperature increase below 1.5°C.

➡ All the info on our events is at wy4cj.org/cop30 (link in bio!), especially useful if you want to know where you can catch them or learn more about the ICJ’s climate ruling.

Last weekend, we joined the national conversation on climate action at LCOY in Wageningen University! 🌍 Together with , , , .unfccc, and we brought young voices to the stage.

We talked with young leaders about why a justice-based approach is non-negotiable. From workshops to panels, we emphasized the need for legal frameworks that protect the most vulnerable ⚖️

At our market stall, we chatted about our purpose and the huge ICJAO win from July! 🎉 The dialogues we had were so important and the connections we made are so valuable.

Let’s keep this energy going 🚀

The day we’ve all been waiting for finally arrived on 23 July, when the ICJ delivered its historic advisory opinion. What we’ve been fighting for became reality and the findings gave us real hope for climate justice!

✨ Highlights from the ruling include:
• Climate action confirmed as a legal duty.
• The right to a healthy environment is a human right.
• No more excuses for polluters.
• A historic legal breakthrough backed unanimously by 15 judges.
• A turning point for global climate governance heading into COP30.

This delivery is a win for youth, vulnerable communities, and the entire global climate justice movement 🌍✊

✨ Can you believe it's been already two weeks since climate justice history was made at the ICJ!?

On 23 July, we stood together in solidarity in The Hague as the International Court of Justice (ICJ) delivered its long-awaited opinion on climate change and State obligations. 🌍⚖

In front of the Peace Palace, with friends from the Pacific and many other places in the world, we assembled and commemorated a 6-year campaign for climate justice at the world's highest court with chants, speeches, performances, and poetry. The big screen put up in front of the palace showed the many influential moments in our campaign, and later showed a livestream of the delivery of the groundbreaking ICJ's climate justice ruling. Meanwhile, WYCJ and CIEL campaigners were working hard to summarise all the information from the advisory opinion as it came out. 💚

Two weeks later, we are still smiling brightly when we look at the pictures of the 23rd and see how many people came together and commemorated this moment. Can you spot yourself in the photographs? ✨
