Two weeks of UN climate negotiations in Bonn have come to an end and our team was on the ground! We had meaningful conversations about the ICJAO and the steps towards COP31 in Antalya. 🌍
For the past two weeks, government delegations, UN bodies, scientific organisations and NGOs came together in Bonn for the sixty-fourth sessions of the Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice (SBSTA) and the Subsidiary Body for Implementation (SBI). This year’s agenda focused on climate adaptation, just transition away from fossil fuels, operationalising loss and damage finance, agriculture and food security, technology transfer, and the follow-up to the first global stocktake.
Our Europe Front Lead Henrieke Bünger, Asia Front Lead Prajwol Bickram Rana and Executive Director Jule Schnakenberg were all attending and speaking throughout the two weeks. Our message was that the ICJ’s climate ruling must lead any conversation in Bonn, and that States must continue to show their support for this ruling after the adoption of the recent UNGA resolution welcoming the ICJAO by implementing it into government policy. ⚖️
We had a packed schedule of events from 8 to 17 June and we covered topics from climate-health governance and the recognition of the right to a healthy environment in Europe, to ICJAO implementation workshops, capacity building, and an official side event on strengthening climate ambition and implementation through due diligence, cooperation and human rights.
