Climate action is not a choice, it is a legal obligation!

From unprecedented global participation to its foundation in decades of established law, the ICJAO clarifies what States must do to protect people, ecosystems, and future generations from the devastating impacts of climate change.

Now that the World Cup has come to an end, here are some highlights from the 2025/26 season ⚽️🌎

On 23 July 2025, the International Court of Justice delivered a historic ruling outlining states’ obligations under international law regarding climate change and set out states’ duties to address the climate crisis.

Since then, courts from Norway to the Netherlands have cited the rulling in decisions blocking new fossil fuel licences and holding states accountable for failing to protect their own citizens. There have been obstacles, delays, and attempts to sideline the decision, so it hasn’t been a run of victories. But 1 year on, with the UN General Assembly endorsement, the legal and political weight of the court’s ruling is even stronger.

As the first anniversary of the ruling approaches, we’re celebrating a year full of climate justice wins. 🚀

This week on Wednesday, we will be in The Hague for The Relevance of ICJ Advisory Opinions: Nuclear Weapons, Climate Change and Other Global Issues. The event marks 80 years of the International Court of Justice and 30 years of its landmark opinion on nuclear weapons.

Our European campaigner, Alexandre, will speak on the panel 2 The ICJ Advisory Opinion on Climate Change to speak about the role of youth in advancing this milestone and reflect on the next steps in the ongoing implementation of the opinion.

During SB64, we teamed up with Young Negotiators Academy for a workshop on using the ICJ advisory opinion on climate change (ICJAO) to elevate climate-justice narratives inside UNFCCC spaces. We held a crash course on the legal obligations clarified by the Court, hands-on exercises with our thematic briefs, and a joint strategy session looking ahead to COP31 in Antalya! 🌱

Prajwol, our Asian Front Convenor, said the young negotiators knew the ICJAO well and were ready to bring it into the rooms, with so many questions about how to use it effectively that the presentation slowly turned into a full roundtable discussion. 🌟

Huge thanks to Youth Negotiators Academy for the partnership, and to everyone who brought such thoughtful questions to the table. 🚀

Two weeks of UN climate negotiations in Bonn have come to an end and our team was on the ground! We had meaningful conversations about the ICJAO and the steps towards COP31 in Antalya. 🌍

For the past two weeks, government delegations, UN bodies, scientific organisations and NGOs came together in Bonn for the sixty-fourth sessions of the Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice (SBSTA) and the Subsidiary Body for Implementation (SBI). This year’s agenda focused on climate adaptation, just transition away from fossil fuels, operationalising loss and damage finance, agriculture and food security, technology transfer, and the follow-up to the first global stocktake.

Our Europe Front Lead Henrieke Bünger, Asia Front Lead Prajwol Bickram Rana and Executive Director Jule Schnakenberg were all attending and speaking throughout the two weeks. Our message was that the ICJ’s climate ruling must lead any conversation in Bonn, and that States must continue to show their support for this ruling after the adoption of the recent UNGA resolution welcoming the ICJAO by implementing it into government policy. ⚖️

We had a packed schedule of events from 8 to 17 June and we covered topics from climate-health governance and the recognition of the right to a healthy environment in Europe, to ICJAO implementation workshops, capacity building, and an official side event on strengthening climate ambition and implementation through due diligence, cooperation and human rights.
