🌍 June 13 – International Albinism Awareness Day

The theme of IAAD 2025 is “Demanding our rights: Protect our skin, Preserve our lives.” It’s a powerful reminder that people with albinism still face life-threatening challenges—especially when it comes to sun safety, healthcare access, and protection against discrimination.

At Inside The Same, we believe that no one should be left behind simply because of a genetic condition. We’re all different, yet so much the same inside. That’s why our work focuses on:

💬 Creating spaces for honest conversations about identity, dignity, and inclusion
🌱 Supporting community-led projects that provide care, education, and empowerment
🎥 Sharing real stories that break stigma and build connection

On this day, and every day, we amplify the voices of people with albinism and stand alongside them in demanding the most basic human rights: protection, visibility, and respect.

🇳🇱 13 juni – Internationale Dag van Albinisme (IAAD)

Het thema van IAAD 2025 is “Eis onze rechten op: bescherm onze huid, bescherm ons leven.” Een krachtige oproep om stil te staan bij de uitdagingen waar mensen met albinisme wereldwijd nog steeds mee te maken hebben—zoals gebrek aan zonbescherming, toegang tot gezondheidszorg en bescherming tegen discriminatie.

Bij Inside The Same geloven we dat niemand buitengesloten mag worden vanwege een genetische aandoening. We zijn allemaal verschillend, en toch van binnen zo hetzelfde. Daarom richten wij ons op:

💬 Ruimte creëren voor eerlijke gesprekken over identiteit, waardigheid en inclusie
🌱 Projecten ondersteunen die zorg, onderwijs en empowerment mogelijk maken
🎥 Echte verhalen delen die stigma’s doorbreken en verbinding maken

Op deze dag, en elke dag, versterken we de stemmen van mensen met albinisme. We staan naast hen in het opeisen van hun meest fundamentele rechten: bescherming, zichtbaarheid en respect.

Together, we create a better future 🧡👩🏻‍🤝‍👩🏽
In 2025, women around the world still face numerous social stigmas. Access to basic menstrual hygiene is a vital part of a woman’s well-being and dignity — a fundamental right that every woman should have.
However, the reality is that in Tanzania, girls miss at least two months of school each year due to menstruation. It is often viewed as impure, and many girls cannot afford menstrual products such as sanitary pads because of the high costs. As a result, many girls stay home during their periods, which has a profoundly negative impact on their education and, ultimately, their future. 👩🏼‍🎓

With the support of the Fred Foundation, Inside The Same — through the Waridi Project — has provided 500 girls with albinism a care package containing three reusable sanitary pads, two pairs of underwear, and a bar of soap. These beautiful packages were crafted by our Mama Mzungu group (mothers with albinism), giving them a sustainable source of income while helping young girls with albinism. 💪🏻

We did it!! ⛰️💪🏼

They always say it’s not about the destination, but about the journey. In our case—climbing Mount Kilimanjaro—that couldn’t have been more true.

A special group of climbers naturally came together in the lead-up to this adventure. Each one of them a beautiful soul, full of kindness, drawn from all corners of the world, united by a shared goal: to make the world a little more loving and a little brighter.

The journey to the summit took us eight days. Following the Lemosho route, we were blessed with the beauty and unique energy of Kilimanjaro. Each day’s landscape was different, breathtaking, and awe-inspiring.

On the day we aimed for the summit, we set off at 11 PM, climbing through the night. A full moon bathed everything in a magical glow. And finally, after 8.5 hours of climbing, we all reached the PEAK!

The emotional release at the summit is indescribable—tears of exhaustion, awe, happiness, and pride flowed freely. Each of us fought our own battles, pushed through, conquered dark thoughts and aching limbs. I am so proud of myself and this incredible group of climbers for what we achieved together.

Dearest Roland, Enzio, Monica, Rachel, Shai, Blake, Kayla, and Nancy—thank you for embarking on this adventure with me. Your boundless dedication helped raise over €25,000, and donations are still pouring in from people who want to make a difference alongside us!

We, all the climbers, are ready. Today, we did an acclimatisation climb to the fantastic waterfalls at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro. We’re all looking forward to the climb, but we also realise it’s going to be a challenge.
