zee caretaker. What began as weekly hands-on work grew into a full-blown commitment: today I combine my background in communication with fieldwork in rescue centers across Africa. I visit them regularly, stay in touch with their staff daily, and closely monitor how every donated euro is used. No bureaucracy – just honest, hands-on collaboration. At Go Ape Foundation, we focus strongly on nature education where it’s needed most: in areas where people and wildlife live side by side, and ecosystems are disappearing at alarming speed. By supporting schools, outreach programs, and conservation centers with tools like camera traps, we empower communities to protect what’s theirs – and ours. Chimpanzees are incredible beings, and they deserve our protection. I’m proud to stand up for them, both with muddy boots in the field and campaigns behind my laptop. Let’s make conservation personal.

You’ve probably seen the recent headlines about chimpanzees in Uganda and the so called “chimp civil war” unfolding between rival groups.

The stories focused on conflict, territory, and violence. On how remarkably human chimpanzee behaviour can sometimes seem.

But while the world watches chimp drama, chimpanzees are quietly performing another role that receives far less attention.

As they move through the forest searching for fruit, chimpanzees carry seeds across large distances and deposit them far from the parent tree. Those seeds can grow into new trees, helping forests regenerate naturally over time and supporting the countless species that depend on healthy ecosystems🌱

Turns out chimpanzees don’t just live in forests. They actually help regenerate them. 💚🌱

Monday Mood: Patience

Young chimpanzees spend years watching older members of their group. Learning how to find food, use tools and move safely through the forest canopy.

Many survival skills are passed down through observation, imitation and years of practice. Some techniques, like cracking nuts with stones or using sticks to fish for termites, can take young chimps many years to fully master.

👑 And then you find yourself standing at a table with Her Majesty the Queen, talking about chimpanzees.

Last week, officially opened a new building for rescued mammals, with Queen Máxima performing the opening ceremony. It marked an important new chapter for an organisation that has been giving wild animals a second chance for decades.

What made the day especially meaningful was that the Queen joined behavioural biologist Kelly, Rescue Coordinator Angel, EU Policy Officer Michèle Hamers and myself for a conversation focused on three rescued former circus chimpanzees currently living at AAP. Together, we spoke about everything involved in giving these chimpanzees a new future: from rescue operations and rehabilitation to long term care, and the difficult reality that there are still EU countries where wild animals in circuses are not yet banned.

I felt incredibly honoured to be part of this special day. One I will genuinely never forget. 🧡

Wat gebeurt er met de wereld om ons heen als soorten verdwijnen?
Endangered Species Day gaat niet alleen over dieren. Het gaat over bossen zonder leven, ecosystemen die instorten en de keuzes die wij als mensen maken.
Chimpansees beschermen betekent ook natuur, biodiversiteit en uiteindelijk onze eigen toekomst veiligstellen. 🌍🐵
