zee caretaker. What began as weekly hands-on work grew into a full-blown commitment: today I combine my background in communication with fieldwork in rescue centers across Africa. I visit them regularly, stay in touch with their staff daily, and closely monitor how every donated euro is used. No bureaucracy – just honest, hands-on collaboration. At Go Ape Foundation, we focus strongly on nature education where it’s needed most: in areas where people and wildlife live side by side, and ecosystems are disappearing at alarming speed. By supporting schools, outreach programs, and conservation centers with tools like camera traps, we empower communities to protect what’s theirs – and ours. Chimpanzees are incredible beings, and they deserve our protection. I’m proud to stand up for them, both with muddy boots in the field and campaigns behind my laptop. Let’s make conservation personal.

Would you like to work at the heart of chimpanzee conservation in Sierra Leone? 🌿🐵

Our partner, Tacugama , is looking for an Education & Community Coordinator.

And this is definitely not your average office job.

Tacugama cares for around 120 rescued chimpanzees, but its work reaches far beyond the sanctuary. Because protecting chimpanzees for the future also means looking at what happens beyond its boundaries.

That means working with schools and local communities on environmental education, forest and wildlife conservation, sustainable livelihoods and community-led solutions. And Tacugama is looking for someone to help strengthen this important part of its work.

You’ll spend time at Tacugama, but also travel into rural communities and conservation landscapes across Sierra Leone, working alongside the outreach team, schools, communities and local partners.

They’re looking for someone with a relevant Master’s degree, experience in education or community-based programmes, and the adaptability, curiosity and enthusiasm to make a real contribution.

Maybe that’s you. Or maybe you know exactly the person who would pack their bags for an opportunity like this. 💚

Een grote stap voor kleine Stacey. 💚🌿

Sinds deze week gaat Stacey samen met twee andere jonge weesjes naar Forest School, waar ze kunnen klimmen, ontdekken en langzaam steeds meer leren om gewoon chimpansee te zijn.

Tunde en Kakua? Die gaan helemaal los in het bos. 😄

Stacey doet het op haar eigen manier. Voorlopig is de allerbeste plek in het hele bos nog gewoon de veilige schoot van haar menselijke surrogaatmoeder.

En dat is helemaal oké. Ieder weesje heeft zijn eigen karakter en zijn eigen trauma’s om te verwerken. En ieder doet dat in zijn eigen tempo. Stacey heeft gewoon wat meer tijd nodig. 💚

Wil jij Chicha beter leren kennen? 💚

Clearly, wildlife photography is not one of my hidden talents. 😂📷

Whenever I’m at Tacugama, I help wherever I can. And sometimes that means grabbing my phone and trying to get some good photos of the chimps.

Trying being the important word here. Swipe for the evidence. 😂

There are so many ways to make yourself useful in conservation, and you don’t need to be a vet, primatologist or animal caregiver to help. Sanctuaries need all kinds of skills, from photography and video to graphic design, communication, education, fundraising, practical work, organisation and plenty of things I’m probably forgetting.

Maybe you’re great with a camera. Maybe you can make brilliant videos, teach, design, write, build, organise or have another skill that could be useful. Whatever it is, there may be a place where your experience can genuinely help.

And volunteering gives a lot back too. You meet people you would never otherwise meet, step into a completely different world, learn an enormous amount and sometimes discover skills you didn’t even know you had.

Or, in my case, discover the ones you definitely don’t have. 😂

So whatever your skill, if you’d like to use it for something that matters, get in touch💚

Chimpanzees live together. Orangutans mostly live apart. Different lives, different continents, but sadly they share something they shouldn’t: they are Critically Endangered.

And this feels more important than ever.

Right now, serious forest and land fires are burning across parts of Indonesia, including Borneo and Sumatra. In West Kalimantan on Borneo, fires recently came dangerously close to an orangutan rehabilitation centre, forcing 60 orangutans to be moved to safer enclosures.

For an orangutan, the forest is everything. It is food, shelter, safety and home.

We spend most of our days talking about chimpanzees in Africa, but today belongs to their extraordinary Asian cousins.

Different apes. Different ways of life. The same need for a future in the wild. 🧡

Dit weekend gaan de chimps naar de Floating Pasar! 🌴🍌

Nou ja… de chimps zelf blijven natuurlijk lekker waar ze zijn 😉, maar Gigi van Grevenbroek neemt haar prachtige chimp artwork mee naar de Floating Pasar bij Fenix in Rotterdam. Ze staat er het hele weekend en zaterdagmiddag kom ik haar helpen. Dus kom vooral even langs!

En wat een toplocatie. Of we echt gaan floaten weet ik niet 😂, maar we staan wel aan de Rotterdamse kades waar in de jaren na de oorlog duizenden mensen na een lange zeereis vanuit Indonesië aankwamen. Zo ook mijn schoonfamilie 💚. Een stukje Nederlands-Indonesische geschiedenis, precies op de plek waar dit weekend de Pasar plaatsvindt.

Tot zover de geschiedenis 😄

Want er is natuurlijk vooral volop eten, drinken, muziek, kunst en gezelligheid. En tussen al het kleurrijke werk van Gigi vind je dus ook haar chimpkaarten. Een deel van de opbrengst daarvan gaat naar Founder Go Ape Foundation - Rowena Facee Schaeffer Foundation. 💚

En wat chimpansees met Indonesië te maken hebben? Eigenlijk helemaal niks. 😂 Maar via Gigi, kunst en Go Ape hebben we gewoon onze eigen connectie gemaakt. 😉🍌

Van 9 maanden oud naar bijna 8 jaar Fifo. 💚

Swipe door de foto’s en zie haar opgroeien vanaf haar redding in 2018 tot de zelfverzekerde, eigenzinnige chimpansee die ze vandaag is.
