Give a Bike

We collect, recycle and transport bikes to support social projects we find valuable, anywhere. We bring bikes to the ones in need. Why is this so important?

Give a Bike’s goal is to let anyone in the world experience the freedom and flexibility of riding a bike. We aim to increase the independency and mobility of people in mostly underdeveloped regions. By refurbishing and re-cycling donated bikes in the Netherlands and transporting them abroad, we enhance and extend the value of the bikes. We aim for projects in regions where not only the individuals

, but also the community benefit from acquiring bikes. In the developing world, access to sustainable transport is life changing. It allows access to healthcare for people from remote locations, education, food, water and the wider community. Being in the possession of a bike means you can travel long distances, twice as fast, whilst carrying four times the load. The Netherlands alone, remove and destroy thousands of bikes from major cities each month after they have failed to have been claimed by their original owners. In recycling these bikes and donating them to people in dire need of them in the developing world, we are creating a win-win situation for all. Partners
We a proud foundation with ANBI status, meaning we have no desire to make profit and all our efforts and funds are devoted to reaching our goal. In order for us to make the biggest impact possible, we have partnered with several organisations abroad. In doing so, the operation remains sustainable because can be assured the bikes are in possession of individuals and organisations with similar goals and values. 🔧🚲 15 Saturdays of Open Bike Works!

Since we started our DIY Saturdays, we’ve organised 15 Open Bike Works sessions and helped around 150 people repair their own bicycles.

With an average of around 10 visitors per session and an estimated €50 saved per repair, together our visitors have saved around €7,500 in bicycle repair costs!

But the impact goes further than that. People learned how to repair and maintain their own bikes, shared skills with each other and kept their bicycles on the road. ❤️

And there has been another fantastic result: through Open Bike Works we’ve met many people who support the mission of Give a Bike, and some of them have even joined our team as volunteers! 🙌

So… we continue!

Daar gaat-ie!👋

Een hele container vol met gereedschap en machines is onderweg naar Oeganda!

In de container zit maar liefst meer dan 8.000 kilo aan materialen, waaronder bijna 100 naaimachines. Een flinke klus om alles te verzamelen, klaar te maken en in de container te krijgen – maar wat een geweldig resultaat!

De container is inmiddels onderweg en de verwachte aankomst in Oeganda is eind oktober.

Aan de andere kant van de wereld wachten verschillende organisaties vol spanning op hun gereedschappen en machines. Zij kunnen deze straks inzetten voor hun leerlingen, zodat zij praktische vaardigheden kunnen leren en zich kunnen voorbereiden op werk of een eigen onderneming.

Wat in Nederland misschien niet meer wordt gebruikt, krijgt in Oeganda een nieuw leven en een enorme betekenis.

🚲 1,000th refurbished bicycle for Fietsbank Rotterdam!!!

It’s 1,000 stories of people moving through Rotterdam, with the wind in their faces, through the rain and sunshine. ☀️

Every now and then, we meet one of our bikes and their new owners on the streets.... carrying groceries, transporting children, rushing to work, or simply cruising around the city.

That’s 1,000 reasons to be happy! And as we like to say at Give a Bike: we don’t just repair bikes, we make people happy.

A huge thank you!!! to our students, volunteers and the whole community who helped us reach bike #1,000 for Fietsbank Rotterdam. 🔧🚲

🚲 Building bikes, building teams - and creating impact! 💚

A few weeks ago, we took Give a Bike on the road to the beautiful TO***CO Theater in Amsterdam for a bike-building team workshop with American Express GBT

Working in teams, participants built and personalized bicycles - discovering bicycle mechanics, getting creative and, of course, having plenty of fun along the way. 🔧🙌

Together, the teams built 10 beutiful bicycles, which will now be used as part of the Fietsbank project in Rotterdam, helping people with limited financial means gain access to a bicycle and independent mobility. 🚲💚

Workshops like this directly contribute to Give a Bike’s mission and help us continue our social projects.

Een fiets uit Nederland heeft een nieuwe eigenaar gevonden in Zambia! Meer precies in het Kalumbila District, in de North-Western Province van Zambia.

Bishop Musumali liep jarenlang vele kilometers door Mwinilunga om kwetsbare mensen te helpen, families te bezoeken. Dankzij deze fiets kan hij nu nog meer mensen bereiken.

Voor veel mensen in Afrika is een fiets veel meer dan alleen een vervoermiddel. Een fiets overbrugt grote afstanden naar scholen, werk, markten en gezondheidszorg. Het kan een echte levenslijn zijn in gebieden waar auto's en bussen te duur zijn of simpelweg niet beschikbaar.

We zijn ontzettend blij om te zien dat een fiets uit Nederland nu een verschil maakt in het dagelijks leven van iemand in Zambia!

🚲 Open Bike Works continues! 🔧

Every 2nd and last Saturday of the month, we open the doors of the Give a Bike workshop from 10:00 to 16:00 for DIY bike repairs, learning, and meeting fellow cycling enthusiasts.

Bring your bike, use our tools, get advice from our mechanics, and keep your bicycle rolling! We look forward to seeing you there!!!

🚲 What happens when you fill a workshop with tools, old bike parts and creative people? A lot!

On 6 June, the Schiehavenhallen were buzzing with DIY energy. At the Give a Bike workshop, visitors turned old bicycle parts into unique pieces of jewellery, gave their bikes a refresh at our Bicycle Shower 🚿, and rolled up their sleeves for all kinds of DIY bike repairs 🔧.

It was great to see so many people creating, learning, helping each other and giving bicycles and bike parts a second life.

A big thank you to the ZDZ XL team, all participating partners, our volunteers, and everyone who stopped by. 💚

We’re already looking forward to the next edition! In the meantime, our Open Bike Works (DIY) sessions continue every 2nd and last Saturday of the month, so if your bike needs some love, or you simply want to learn how to fix it yourself, you’re always welcome.

On Saturday 6 June, Schiehavenhallen turns into one big makers festival where you can try, repair, create and discover.

The Give a Bike team prepared a range of bicycle activities:
💍 Make your own jewellery from bicycle parts, turn old chains and leftover bike parts into something unique
🚿 Bike shower / bike wash, because hygiene is half the health 😉

And of course, you are also welcome to bring your bicycle and get your hands dirty:

At the Give a Bike Foundation, we are proud to connect Stichting Mano, Fietsschool010 and Fietsbank Rotterdam into one circle of opportunity.
Newcomers connected to Stichting Mano learn how to cycle through Fietsschool010 at the Give a Bike workshop 🚲

After receiving their certificate, they can receive a bicycle through the Fietsbank project, for which Give a Bike repairs bicycles.

At the same time, participants from Stichting Mano and beyond can join the Give a Bike training program and learn bicycle repair skills.
