Menstrual Hygiene Day is celebrated every year on 28 May. Initiated by WASH United, the mission of MH Day is to create a period-friendly world.

In rural communities like San Pablo, Colombia, we have seen first-hand how period poverty shapes the lives of young girls.

At Stories of Love, our focus is on creating opportunities for young people in San Pablo to access university education. But for girls to reach that point, finishing school is vital. A girl who misses school because of her period is a girl whose future is quietly being taken from her. That is something we refuse to accept.

On 28 May, the Stories of Love Movement is joining the global , aiming to provide 100 girls in San Pablo with a full year’s supply of period products.

When we started The Stories of Love Movement in San Pablo, we focused on education, as it is one of the many challenges this community faces. Education is what opens the door to the future for most of the talented young people there.

We know that young girls very frequently miss school due to not having access to period products. This becomes a real source of stress for them every month.

That is why we started this annual project to help them understand their menstruation, empower them, and provide them with period products so they do not miss school. Our team, who work directly with the community, can say first-hand how this has helped change the lives of these girls and their families, giving them one less thing to worry about.

Still, there are many more young women — not just in Colombia but around the world — facing the same challenge. And just to put it into perspective: for the price of an afternoon coffee and a snack, €16, one girl can have a whole year of menstrual hygiene products in Colombia.

We have dedicated May’s posts to the girls in the community we support in San Pablo, Colombia, including Yina, Berta, and Yusethis, who are ideating and coordinating our vision there.

This is just a small glimpse into the incredible work our team has been doing locally, providing girls not only with menstrual products, but also with education, support, and safe conversations through the programmes delivered at our educational centre, Sembrando Futuros.

The girls received information about the project and received their first package of menstrual pads. We also asked who was interested in trying reusable pads and tampons so that we can personalize their menstrual kit.
From now on each girl will receive the following things every month as part of their menstrual kit and guidance:

- A month’s worth of menstrual products (sanitary pads and/or tampons)
- A package of intimate wet wipes (many girls do not always have access to clean water at home)
- A bag to store the products

Furthermore, every 1-2 months, when they come to pick up their kit, we’ll organise an educational activity related to menstruation, self-care, protection, and empowerment. These meetings and activities will also serve as evaluations throughout the project.

And yet it still happens.

That's why we took action. We partnered with San Pablo's main school, and together with their programme coordinator — who knows each student and their family personally — we identified the girls who need this support the most because their families cannot consistently provide them with menstrual products.

Through this initiative, we provide each girl with a hygiene kit for her period, as well as running educational workshops on topics such as menstruation, self-care, protection and empowerment.

These girls are incredibly talented, smart and brave. Every girl we support and guide gives us hope for a better future.

Y sin embargo, sigue ocurriendo.

Por eso decidimos actuar. Nos aliamos con el colegio principal de San Pablo y junto con su coordinadora de programas, quien conoce personalmente a cada estudiante y a su familia, identificamos a las niñas que más necesitan este apoyo, porque sus familias no tienen recursos económicos para proveerles productos de higiene menstrual.

A través de esta iniciativa, le entregamos a cada niña un kit de higiene para su periodo y también realizamos talleres educativos sobre temas como la menstruación, el autocuidado, métodos anticonceptivos y empoderamiento.

Estas niñas son increíblemente talentosas, inteligentes y valientes. Cada niña que apoyamos y acompañamos nos llena de esperanza por un futuro mejor.

Period poverty sadly, is a daily struggle for many girls in the community that we serve in Colombia.

Many girls skip school during their menstruation because their families do not have the means to pay for menstrual pads, which have become increasingly more expensive over the years. Missing school affects their school results and motivation, which later can have a negative effect on the number of girls who manage to complete high school.

We believe that something as natural as a period should not stand in the way of the educational dreams of girls! When you educate a girl, you invest in the future of a whole community and kick-start a cycle of success.

La pobreza menstrual es, tristemente, una lucha diaria para muchas niñas en la comunidad que servimos en Colombia.

Muchas niñas faltan a la escuela durante su menstruación porque sus familias no tienen los medios para comprar toallas sanitarias, que se han encarecido cada vez más con los años. Faltar a la escuela afecta su rendimiento académico y su motivación, lo que más adelante puede tener un impacto negativo en el número de niñas que logran terminar el bachillerato.
