FAECTOR's Estimator

FAECTOR's Estimator Estimator is FAECTOR's online platform. We will publish articles on everything that happens around FAECTOR or is otherwise interesting to readers!

Estimator is FAECTOR's online publication platform. In 2015, we chose for a big change and the former quarterly magazine is now a website! FAECTOR’s main intention with this new format is to accomplish more: more readers, more articles, more diversity. The website is easily accessible and there will be a continuous flow of articles throughout the week. We have decided to make more room for enterta

inment: every Monday, the ‘Puzzle of the week’ will be published. We are also very happy to announce we have started a collaboration with the editors of ‘The Waffle’! Of course, this well-known news platform requires no introduction. ‘The Waffle’ articles will be regularly published on the Estimator site. Furthermore, every block, a prize can be won in a contest! Naturally, we will still write about serious topics too: there will be a monthly horoscope written by our very own astrologist! The second thing we will focus on more with the “new” Estimator, will be reader input. Whenever you feel you have something interesting to say, please contact us at [email protected], and we might just publish it! This can be anything, from juicy gossip about board members or awesome personal experiences to ideas for puzzles or personal opinions. Something we will at least need your input for, is the new column ‘Agony Aunt Agathe’! Whenever you have a problem and some advice would be welcome, write to our agony aunt! Agathe will provide you with new, surprising insights that will definitely help you out. Of course, we will also write about all FAECTOR’s events, like social drinks and parties, and inhouse days or the Landelijke Econometristen Dag. We will also give insights in companies that involve Econometrics & OR, interview people and give you practical tips on facets relevant to your life.

The world’s been on a frenetic merry-go-round for the past months and the prospect for the rest of the year is rather bleak. While war is still raging in Ukraine and world’s largest graine supplies are stuck in Ukrainian ports ahead of this year’s harvest, global recession is looming ever closer on an already bleak horizon. Across the pond, Roe vs Wade was overturned, meaning that states have a clear path at banning guns… My bad, I forgot we’re talking about the US after all. States have a clear path at banning abortion. Yeah, that sounds more like it, USA! But, for once, I would like to keep clear of all the sordid news that have pestered us this year and tell you a story about McDonald’s and Communism.

Estimator has once again travelled to Amsterdam to interview a graduated Econometrician who is currently working part-time as a Trading Assistant at DaVinci Derivatives. Jeffrey Zwart finished his Bachelor in Econometrics and Operations Research at Erasmus University and is currently doing his Masters in Quantitative Finance at Erasmus as well. During the interview, we talked about his studies, the firm and trading in general.

The crypto market crashed about a month ago and this can only be news to those living under some rocks or too busy with the Heard vs Depp lawsuit to notice the obvious staring them in the eyes. So, here’s the story of the most volatile week in the history of cryptocurrencies, a story of arrogance and greed, the domino effects of unregulated markets and the depressing story of the “Lunatics”, a (now-extinct) group of irresponsible gold diggers who thought they had discovered the philosopher’s stone, only to find it was a worthless amethyst. But hey, who said life was fair? A certain change of pace and tone will be noticeable for the ones who also read the 1st article on cryptocurrencies. I will first explain the concept behind stable coins and then focus on algorithmic stablecoins (i.e., TerraUSD). Ultimately, we will analyse the crash per se and go through the juiciest theories on the street. Hop on and enjoy the ride!

A couple months ago, the estimator had the privilege of interviewing the Sijbren Cnossen Professor of Public Economics at ESE, Bas Jacobs. And as of June 2022, prof.dr. Jacobs will be appointed as the Professor of Public Economics at the School of Economics and Business at VU Amsterdam. Professor Jacobs has held a crucial role in the Dutch economic policy debate with several renowned works on optimal taxation and income redistribution among many other fundamental economic topics. During our talk we got the chance to hear about his student journey, as he recited many obstacles he had encountered and how he had overcome them. We also got the opportunity to ask about his research, where he drives inspiration from and the topics he’s most passionate about.

Paris, the city of love. The city of lights. A fashion capital of Europe. Paris does leave a vivid and lasting emotion to anyone that ever visits it, whether it’s disgust at the uncleanness that surrounds the capital, stress at the countless tourists promenading all year round, or awe at the beauty and art-filled galleries and palaces. One does not simply remain indifferent to Paris. With spring well under way and summer just around the corner, you might be already making your travel list for the months to come. The Mediterranean coast is the safe option for a pleasurable seaside escapade, Greece seems awfully popular in these parts of the world as well. And now that Macron has been re-elected, you might be contemplating visiting the much-admired French capital. Whether you have recently visited the city or plan on doing so, or simply want to learn more about the French culture and history, this article was meant for you.

Back in early April, the estimator had the chance of indulging in what many would label as one too many cups of coffee. We embarked on the mission to attend the Amsterdam Coffee Festival and among us were daily coffee drinkers and Floris, who despises coffee (or shall I now say despised?). His presence was monumental for us, as it allowed us to walk him through his coffee intervention. In this article we’ll briefly take you along our coffee journey through some pictures and end off with the results of a survey we conducted on the festival attendees. Don’t expect us to point out the particulars of the amount of coffee we each had that day - far too many if you ask Floris.

Isn’t it mind boggling how one can pay an x amount for a pair of sneakers and then walk out of the store, only to see its value quadruple, if not more? don’t we all buy sneakers for the same reasons?

Well, yes and no, depending on who you ask. For some, a sneaker is a statement piece, for others it’s about getting from point A to point B. Lately however, it’s understood to be a financial asset and therefore a collectible piece of item of the highest value. I’d say the first two explanations for buying a sneaker are fairly self-explanatory. Thus, I’ll dig into the third one, which in fact sheds light to the phenomenon of “hyperinflation in the sneaker market.

It has been over one month since this year's final Econometrics 1 lecture. For years, the final lecture had been a notorious one for most students. Marked by students' weary faces, all counting their precious and scarce hours of sleep awaiting the exam week. But this year, the lecture was memorable for a whole different reason; for during the lecture, the professor, dr. Christiaan Heij, was awarded the “De Desiderius” by the Dean Prof. Patrick Groenen on behalf of the Executive Board of Erasmus University Rotterdam for a plethora of achievements.

Some weeks after the said event, Estimator conducted an online interview with Mr. Heij. During the interview, we covered numerous topics, from his studies and career to his thoughts on the prospects of the field Econometrics. He also shared a short story from when he came to Rotterdam to sit his job interview. So, if you want to find out more about the professor, the field of Econometrics and the spirit of the people of Rotterdam, read on!

Impending doom awaits Jakarta. With rising sea levels and a low ground level, the capital of Indonesia is to become uninhabitable in 30 years. Hence why, the government is going to move the capital to a completely new city on Borneo: Nusantara. But to overcome the water, a huge challenge lies ahead. Before we delve in, here's a fun fact: The Dutch are actually helping them.

Who hasn’t heard of blockchains, cryptocurrencies, bitcoins or NFTs? Have you ever wondered what they really mean and what the hype is all about? Don’t you feel left out when you hear so many people talking about the topic (even on TikTok of all places) and you don’t understand the slightest bit? Or maybe you just want to impress your Tinder/Grindr date. If so, read on to find out enough to impress even the 24-year-olds still-living-in-their-parent’s-basement crypto millionaires.

If you are still reading, then my puns have worked (James Bay’s “Peer pressure” blasting in the background). Ironically, many people have that friend/acquaintance that is trading crypto, “on the verge” of becoming really wealthy, but still asking you to foot the restaurant bill and condescendingly arguing that “you couldn’t understand it anyways, Karen”. So, let’s try to change that then. In this article, we will cover blockchains and cryptocurrencies and slightly brush on the topic of NFTs.
