Our Story - Digitally Empowering the Response to Opioid Overdose

Problem Analysis

With nearly 65,000 drug-overdose deaths in 2017, America’s opioid epidemic is fueling a public-health crisis, while drug related deaths are also rising rapidly in Canada, Europe and Australia. The present response to acute opioid overdose, if existent, is designed around the availability of the antidote naloxone, overdose education, awareness raising and naloxone application training for professional First Responders (and a limited number of lay people) and relies on considerable public funding. The burden of effectiveness for the actual response relies largely on professional first responders, and is characterized by 20th century communication infrastructures and tools, which do not facilitate rapid and accurately coordinated responses to overdoses.

Mission

The mission of the recently founded Stop Overdose Now Foundation is to end the epidemic of overdose deaths brought about by opioids and other drugs by digitally networking volunteer and community based responses to opioid overdose.

Approach: A Digital Overdose Response & Anticipation Network

We are developing an innovative and global Digital Overdose Response Networking infrastructure that will bring together the acute demand for assistance with an overdose with the availability of naloxone and trained volunteers in a geographic area in real time, using GPS and other data.

In collaboration with our international partners, we are building the Stop Overdose Now Network (SONNET). This global platform will link people who use drugs with (peer) volunteers carrying naloxone, whether people are in their homestead or traveling elsewhere.

Beneficiaries

Our platform will empower people who use opioids, concerned citizens and communities to take action against overdose. It will provide health authorities and service organizations tasked with overdose prevention with a powerful information system and organizing tool, allowing for targeting efforts and resources and resulting in more efficient planning of the response to overdose, using less public resources.

Expected Impact

Our initiative presents the missing link in the response to overdose and will greatly enhance the ability of the affected communities, civil society and health authorities to effectively respond to overdose. Our approach is built bottom up and represents a unique partnership with the affected communities, researchers and service providers alike.
