How can we prevent future accidents if we don't fully learn from past ones? This is a pressing question for African aviation.

A recent IATA analysis revealed a concerning data gap: of 42 accidents in Africa between 2018 and 2023, only eight have published final reports. Timely and transparent accident investigation is key to building a strong safety culture. It turns each accident into a lesson that can prevent future ones.

Global standards require countries to publish final reports within 12 months, but this doesn't always happen. Without this data, it's difficult to create effective safety systems and improve aviation safety in Africa.

What steps can the industry take to support better reporting and data sharing?

At the end of October our director Tom Kok had meetings with Martijn Ouwendijk and Ralf Overduyn at Rotterdam Airport. Both men are also part of the large team of dedicated instructors of the AviAssist Foundation.

Tom was very pleased to meet Air Side Operations Manager Annette Gelens and her colleague Bernd Zweden to talk about future possibilities.

๐ŸŒ ๐ŸŒโœˆ๏ธ Sustainable Aviation Fuel in Kenya: Paving the way for greener skies

The future of aviation is greener! Kenya is advancing research on Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), a cleaner, low-carbon alternative to traditional jet fuel that helps reduce aviationโ€™s environmental footprint.

A recent report, Feasibility Study on the use of Sustainable Aviation Fuels in Kenya (under ICAOโ€“EU support), confirms that Kenya has the right conditions to build a domestic SAF industry.

According to the study, Kenya could produce up to 200 million litres of SAF per year by 2030 using waste-based feedstock such as used cooking oil (UCO).

The report also highlights other potential feedstocks for longer-term SAF production such as municipal solid waste (MSW), sugarcane residues (cane tops), and water hyacinth, which could support a sustainable SAF supply chain in Kenya.

Under the global ACTโ€‘SAF initiative led by ICAO (with support from the EU), Kenya is part of a network of countries working to build capacity, do feasibility studies, and support SAF deployment worldwide.

At AviAssist, we believe this presents a real opportunity, not just for Kenya, but for African aviation generally.

We are pleased to announce that the 44th edition of Safety Focus magazine is now available for download ๐Ÿ‘‰ aviassist.org/magazine.

As always our magazine features a wide range of articles that highlight key lessons and insights for aviation safety in Africa and beyond.

In this edition:

๐Ÿ“–โ€œPull Up, Captainโ€ by Mark Lacagnina
A detailed account of the Precision Air ATR 42 accident at Bukoba, Tanzania, where ignoring terrain warnings and the first officerโ€™s pleas led to tragedy. The article underscores the importance of respecting safety systems, crew input, and the challenges of visual approaches in adverse weather.

๐Ÿ“– โ€œContinued Airworthiness vs. Continuing Airworthinessโ€ by Stefan Machita (republished with permission from Airbus).

An essential clarification of two terms often confused in aviation. Continuing airworthiness refers to the daily responsibility of operators to keep each aircraft safe to fly, while continued airworthiness focuses on the long-term design integrity and safety of an aircraft type, overseen by manufacturers and regulators.

These and other articles in this edition emphasize why continuous learning and professional development are vital to raising the bar for aviation safety across Africa.

Grateful to have been able to join, the ๐€๐ฏ๐ข๐€๐ฌ๐ฌ๐ข๐ฌ๐ญ ๐…๐จ๐ฎ๐ง๐๐š๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง had a great opportunity to gain knowledge about relevant aviation safety topics.

The basic theme of the day, being "Just Culture", the audience was challenged to participate in interactive as well as informative sessions, about
existing incidents, the latest drone detection techniques and the safety network management at .klm_schiphol.

Congratulations to for winning the annual safety award for their "See it and Say it" app, and for their effective training for ground and aircrews to deal with aggression by passengers. Both initiatives highly contribute to safety for crew and passengers.

A large team of our volunteers was present AND used the intervals to explain the importance of our Aviation Safety courses in Africa to visitors to our stand.

Our video offers a nice impression of the day, AND of one of the most famous venues of the Netherlands, miniature city

Deliberately different!

Thrilled to be back in Nairobi this week from 17-19 November for our FRMS course hosted by ! Itโ€™s always great to see dedicated aviation professionals in one room, all united by a shared goal: keeping our skies safe.

Weโ€™ve got an amazing group with participants from , , , , all exploring how we can better understand and manage fatigue risk.

Over the next three days, strategies to identify and manage fatigue risks, and support safer operations will be discussed. The course will be delivered by Alexandra Holmes and coordinated and managed by AviAssist director, Tom Kok, to ensure a smooth and engaging learning experience.

Weโ€™re pleased to welcome everyone joining us and look forward to a productive and engaging course. Hereโ€™s to a week of learning, sharing, and making aviation safer, together. โœˆ
