River Bioblitz at the confluence of the cold Volturno River and a slightly warmer Jamare River in the Italian Central Appenines was a moment where the local community explored their home rivers ⛰️. It was an opportunity to deepen their knowledge and appreciation for the unique river life 🦋.

The River Collective took part in the Volturno River Week in the Italian Central Apennines, a project dedicated to reconnecting local communities with their home rivers 🐻 ⛰️ 🌊 .

We explored landscapes and met inspiring people including ones from Coordinamento No Pizzone 2, a local movement working to protect the Volturno River from a proposed second hydropower project that threatens wildlife habitats and the riverine regime ✋ 🛑.

Our first evening brought everyone together in a local bar in Pizzone, where residents shared poems, stories, and memories inspired by rivers.

And with that, we concluded the SRC Tagliamento week and left Pinzano each and every one of us richer with experience, knowledge, understanding and deep connection to the Tagliamento and to each other. 🩵 Leaving has been hard and emotional, having spent one long (in the best way) week together, working and thinking, swimming in the cold river, eating as a family, resting in the shade, enjoying the cool of the brief summer storms, brainstorming ideas and exploring the rich and varied ecosystems of the braided river.
More than anything, we built a community with shared determination to stay involved and connected to the Tagliamento and help the ongoing efforts to keep it wild and free-flowing.

Chiara Scaini and Nick Molodow led the roleplaying workshop exploring the roles and values of different stakeholders in the context of Tagliamento and how their goals and values intersect.
Later we played a game of River Werewolf with Rosa Moosbrugger that further built on the idea of different roles people and organizations can play within the river community.

Rafting day on the Tagliamento! 🩵 We enjoyed the views of the river surrounded by mountains and made a few stops on the sandy banks to join Andrea Goltara from CIRF who told us about the biggest pressures the Tagliamento has been facing, primarily the enormous quantities of the gravel being extracted and the diversion of the Tagliamento from it’s natural, always changing course, into a channel and a lake for agriculture and the hydropower use.
We were also joined by a few River Collective members who came to support us, cheer us on and offer their support on and off the river 😊

BioBlitz day on the Tagliamento! James Vonesh and Francesco Boscutti led the groups in understanding the richness and the diversity present even in a seemingly “desert” rocky environment that is the banks and islands of the Tagliamento, a river that is both unforgiving and life-giving, shaping and reshaping the environment and bringing with it the nutrients needed for species to thrive.
