The feeling when someone supports something you pour your heart in. Buoyed, gratitude, heartened, joy, motivated. This might be the most heartfelt action in growing the River Collective community.

Lieke Dutch a friend that Vera Knook has known since she started kayaking at her local kayak club, decided to start a sponsor action for the River Collective!

A definite win win win. She had the motivation to get into her boat even when it rained (which yes, she was actually happy about ;)), we felt the support and inspiration from our own community of friends, our motivation to keep building a river community skyrocketed and we have some cash to keep doing so 💙

Thank you so much Lieke, for all this energy, good vibes, for getting out there and making it fun, for believing in the River Collective and for backing it up with this action. And of course a huge thanks to all your supporters!!

🇬🇧The last leg of our descent of the Samaná watershed, in which we swapped the raft for the lancha where the Samaná meets the Magdalena.

We took some time to brainstorm ideas on converting all experiences and knowledge so that it can stay with the local communities and contribute to the protection of this river.

🇨🇴 La última etapa de nuestro descenso por la cuenca del Samaná, en la que dejamos la balsa para continuar en lancha, justo donde el Samaná se encuentra con el Magdalena.

Nos tomamos un tiempo para pensar y compartir ideas sobre cómo convertir todas estas experiencias y conocimientos en algo que pueda permanecer en las comunidades locales y contribuir a la protección de este río.

🇬🇧Shaking up science! .je took gas samples from the Samaná headwaters all the way to the confluence with the Magdalena. In addition she deployed a logger under the raft for continuous measurement of water parameters. This will help her understand the metabolism of the river, and how it changes when more tributaries join the flow.

She couldn’t have wished for a better shaking assistant than .iguanna who had time during the rafting, as her project focused on interviews with the riverside communities.

Each SRC Samaná participant focused on a personal project to highlight the importance of a connected Samaná from their respective disciplines. Additionally, they brainstormed collaborations to cross disciplines.

🇨🇴Sacudiendo la ciencia! je tomó muestras de gas desde las cabeceras del río Samana hasta su confluencia con el Magdalena. Adicionalemente a esto, agregó un medidor debajo del raft para medir continuamente los paramentos de agua en nuestro descenso por el río. Estos datos le ayudarán a entender e interpretar el metabolismo del río y cómo va cambiando cuando más tributarios se unen a su cauce.

No pudo haber tenido una mejor asistente de investigación para sacudir las muestras .iguanna (necesario para traer equilibrio entre el agua y aire). Aparte de esto, ivanna también tuvo tiempo para desarrollar su propio proyecto realizando entrevistas a lo largo de las comunidades de la cuenca.

Cada participante del SRC se enfocó en desarrollar proyectos personales para resaltar la importancia de la conectividad del río desde sus respectivas disciplinas. Adicionalmente, nacieron ideas de colaboración entre diferentes disciplinas.

🇬🇧 The Students for Rivers Camp Samaná brought a Team of 17 people and their diverse knowledge on an expedition from the headwaters of the Samaná to it’s confluence with the Magdalena. Here’s a recap of the first stage by foot through the waterfall valley. We slept at casa de piedra where the local community shared their histories with us. Norberto, Iván and Gustavo joined us for this part to share their wisdom on plants, archeology and fungus.

Este es un recap de la primera sección caminando por el valle de las cascadas donde dormimos en la casa de piedra y la comunidad nos contó sus historias. Norberto, Iván y Gustavo nos acompañaron para compartir sus saberes sobre plantas, arqueología y hongos.

When Autumn Arrives maps relationships and practices among humans and more-than-humans, exploring connections shaped by animals, plants, fungi, elements, and other forces. Through stories of visible and invisible entanglements, cyclical temporalities, and situated experiences, we invite participants to (re)imagine and re(live) European geographies, seasonal practices, and ancient eco-cultural wisdom—and perhaps find a deeper sense of belonging to the land. A collaboration between ERC ABIDE, HAS-HUB, SHIFT and the River Collective, open to anyone interested!

This workshop is part of the annual celebration of the Animal Day by the Human-Animal Studies ICS Instituto de Ciências Sociais and the ERC-funded ABIDE project European Research Council and hosted by The River Collective

Ríos Libres 🥳 Claudia Günzberg played THE tunes at Die Flößerei and got us dancing to raise funds for the Samaná Students for Rivers Camp. € 650 and still counting, thank you to all who danced with us!! Or ate our snacks (🙌 Sina Salehi for joining Vera Knook in the kitchen for hours), or drank the Colombian aguardiente. Or did some backflips. It was magic 🪄

and the magic was captured by kristijan_meth 📸🙏

A River Bioblitz sparks interest and awareness of the enchanting life a river creates. During the Volturno River week the local community explored their home rivers, mapped elements and textures and identified aquatic species 🌱 🌼 🐜.
