We got a new review! Gravplåga - Veneration of Chaos ⚔️

Gravplåga emerged from Linköping, Sweden in 2025, the solitary vision of musician Malignant Desecrator. Gravplåga translates to something like "grave torment," a fitting banner for a project built on cold, patient dread. The project's debut EP, “Maliferous Portents”, set the stage: raw, unpolished second-wave worship, more concerned with atmosphere than spectacle.

We got a new article! South American Fire ⚔️

When the history of first wave black metal is told, the spotlight almost always falls on Europe. Venom gave the genre its name, Bathory refined its sound, and Hellhammer and Celtic Frost pushed extreme metal into riff-driven territory. Yet while Europe was laying the foundation, an entirely different beast was emerging in South America.

Throughout the 1980s, Brazil, Colombia, Chile, and Peru forged one of the most savage movements in extreme metal history. Drawing from the speed of thrash, these bands created something far more chaotic, primitive, and violent than most of their European counterparts.

We got a new review! Ultratvmba - Night Worship ⚔️

The EP starts with a punch to the face with "Night Worship": aggressive, fast, straight to the point, as you’d expect by this mix of subgenres, to then slow down, with chords ringing, some dissonance and the bass complementing things. Also, the ending of this song somehow reminded me of very early Mayhem.

We got a new interview! Abghül (Ghül/Imladris) ⚔️

"Its obvious that the all mighty Summoning have served as an inspiration across both of your projects now. Imladris however sees a significant shift away from Ghül's more raw sound and into a far more atmospheric landscape. Is this something you've been working towards for awhile and finally found the proper outlet for or was this a sort of one off project?

Abghül: Creating a “Summoning” project is something I have considered doing for a while, and the idea for the project actually predates Ghül. However, for whatever reason Ghül came first and for a while took a precedent. At the time I was playing in a couple of other bands and was fairly unhappy with the band dynamic at the time. I like to create very much within my own vision and on my own terms, and writing within the scope of a one-person Black Metal project gave me the opportunity to do this and has allowed myself to develop and explore my own musical journey."

Before getting into the history, it should be stated outright that summoning is not just one entry in this history, but rather they are possibly the single most important Tolkien-themed black metal band that has ever existed. If I had to pick one band that embodied Tolkien’s legendarium and did so with the integrity it deserves, it would be summoning. That is an enormous claim to make about a two-person black metal project that has never played a single live show, I know. But the rest of this article will be an attempt to show why it's a defensible hill to die on.

We got a new review! Fire Magic - Memories of Fire ⚔️

Fire Magic is a Richmond based duo I would consider on the forefront of defining a particular blend of flavors modern underground USBM in the 2020's is becoming known for. While the band's debut thoroughly indicated potential, their March 2026 release in my view is a triumphal delivery of a signature-sound defining coalescence of elements I would consider a very rare union between Black Metal that meets high-fidelity modern music production standards, and nuanced raw black metal elements people who prefer lo-fi black metal tend to look for.

"Given that Embers of Reverie and Astral Binding & The Oathsworn both sold out instantly which pushed you atop of the UK Black Metal chart on Bandcamp, did that recognition change on how you approached writing once you noticed that people were paying attention?

No, I don’t think it changed how I approached the writing. It was definitely encouraging though and a source of motivation to keep going and write more. I think when you listen to the 4 demo tracks before Embers, you can really hear that I’m still trying to figure out the sound and there’s a very tangible, linear progression. Embers of Reverie was the moment I really felt that I had got there. I made a bit more of an effort with the release - with a physical release etc - and began to get excited about writing and releasing more. And the positive reaction was a little bit of confirmation for me that maybe I was going in the right direction."

"This is a genuinely dense mythology for a debut album. A monolith from deep space, an entity called the Void Star, an extinct race called the Sorn, and a resistance leader who happens to be the last of a dying people. Where did this whole universe come from, and how much of it lives in your heads beyond what made it onto these six songs?

Vokar: The idea for the universe came after we discussed the potential of doing a concept album about a 2nd ice age. I just took the ball and ran with it. With a lifetime of reading and watching scifi the ideas just flowed out of me. The Void Star mythos/universe is constantly on my mind with different ideas to continue the story."

We got a new interview! Maria of Copper Mountains ⚔️

"The name Maria of Copper Mountains immediately evokes something folkloric and almost mythical. Where does the name come from?

Maria: You’re right, this name was inspired by the tales of Pavel Bazhov, which are an integral part of the Ural identity (Ural is the region I’m from). Although these tales are the author’s own material, not genuine folklore, they symbolize the Ural as they are based on elements of Ural distinctiveness - mountains, mining, and the abundance of minerals. One of Bazhov’s tales, “The Mistress of the Copper Mountain,” tells the story of a mythical spirit-mistress of the Ural Mountains. She is the owner of the earth’s riches, the keeper of the secrets of beauty. This is where the project’s name comes from - as a symbol of local identity."
