On 16 August, we had a premiere - we managed to have a live teams call with the teachers and students on the island Nosy Komba!
All thanks to Tiago Soares, ESA Staff and Sunshine in Nosy Komba's project manager, and volunteer Elena Galletti, who normally works for HE Space at ESTEC as a radio navigation engineer and who are on a working holiday on the island.
The Sunshine in Nosy Komba project is carried out on the island of Nosy Komba, Madagascar, initiated and supported by ESA staff. It focuses on education, health care and economic development. HE Space Children's Foundation has supported this project since the early days.
Tiago and Elena introduced us to the students Rachiad (highschool) and Judicael (university) and teachers (Valeria, Myriam and Hervenot) and trainee teachers (Oanรฉ and Jadamaria) of the campus who spoke good English - normally they speak Malagasy or French. We were impressed with the progress made with help of the cybercafe to produce school books, as you can see from the picture below. The teachersโ training project has really taken off and we were able to talk to a trainee teacher for the youngest pupils, aged 3 โ 4, and a secondary school teacher. We also talked to one of the university students who explained that they learn a lot from the internet.
Tiago gave us an update about all the other initiatives they are currently working on. During their visit with other volunteers from ESA, they have worked on solar power supplies for the school and health centre. They have also worked on a water filtering system so people can get clean water to drink.
The school was in need of repairs. The floors of the dorms, where the pupils sleep above the schoolroom, were damaged by termites and needed to be replaced. The volunteers will also help to make a fitness area outside.
