Producing Fred J Miller...!
I have known Fred for some thirty years, and from the very first time we saw each other in the early nineties, there was that intuitive premonition that - despite the fact that we rarely saw each other - further on in our lives we would discover the reason why we met. So it was not surprising that he contacted me at Silly Sound in July 2024. Fred was familiar with my musical work and wanted me to produce some of his songs.
Even before I listened to his sketches, I said “yes,” because it involved Fred. And thankfully so! For it has been a privilege to be able to pick up Fred’s lovely small demo seeds, and grow those fragile songs into a form in which they thrived trying to keep the original sound of Fred's initial demos intact as much as possible.
It has been a beautiful journey through the realm of possibilities. An exploration in search of what every individual song wanted and with which instrumental company Fred's voice would want to surround itself in each song. Building space and atmosphere, using the beautiful sounds of guitarist Pieter Klaassen and cellist Renée Wijnhoven and adding arrangements for keys, strings and woodwind.
Every Silly Sound collaboration has been special in the past fourteen years. And so was this one. An exhilarating, intense and educational musical adventure that will stay with us forever for years to come.
Thanks Fred! Can't wait until the songs get to fly loose for the first time....
