Three years ago, on October 7th, Hamas terrorists murdered 64 people in Kibbutz Kfar Aza, where Hanita Baram and Alon Tal lived, and abducted 19 residents. Hanita lost her eldest son, and Alon lost several friends. Both survived the attack. They share their experiences of that day.

Three years ago today – 7th October 2023 – thousands of terrorists led by Hamas, joined by Palestinian Islamic Jihad and other factions from Gaza, broke through Israel’s border and carried out the deadliest attack on the Jewish people since the Holocaust. Around 1,200 people were brutally murdered, most of them civilians, and 251 were dragged into Gaza as hostages. Families were burned in their homes, women were gruesomely r***d and abused, and young people hunted down at a music festival.

Live in booths for seven days: All native-born Israelites are to live in booths.

Leviticus 23:41–42 • NIV 1984

Tonight, the feast of Sukkot, also known as “the Feast of Tabernacles,” begins. It is a time of joy and thanksgiving. The Jewish people live in booths in remembrance of the time when they had to depend on God after they were brought out of Egypt into the wilderness.

Let us pray for protection during this feast.

When the people of Israel gathered in Jerusalem in the days of Nehemiah, hearing the words of the Law brought them to tears. Yet their leaders called them to rejoice, to share food with those who had nothing prepared, and to find strength in the joy of the LORD. Soon afterwards, they built booths to celebrate the Feast of Tabernacles (Nehemiah 8).

Yom Kippur is the holiest day of the year — the moment when Jews feel closest to God. It is the Day of Atonement — “For on this day, He will forgive you, to purify you, that you be cleansed from all your sins before God” (Leviticus 16:30).

For nearly twenty-six hours, from a few minutes before sunset on 9 Tishrei until after nightfall on 10 Tishrei, faithful Jews “afflict their souls”: abstaining from food and drink, refraining from washing or anointing the body, avoiding leather footwear, and abstaining from marital relations.

The Jewish people have always been the subject of false accusations and slander. When Nehemiah rebuilt Jerusalem’s walls, Sanballat didn’t contest the project honestly — he wrote an open letter to the Persian authorities accusing Nehemiah of secret rebellion, hoping an official body would act on an unverifiable claim before the truth could catch up (Nehemiah 6:6–8).
