A different kind of enrichment day at FELIDA! 🔨🦁

Our animal caretakers spend a lot of time creating enriching experiences for the big cats in our care. One of their absolute favourites? Fire hose hangers! These sturdy hanging toys encourage natural behaviours such as exploring, pulling, playing, and interacting with their environment. The only challenge? You can't simply buy them in a store...

So recently, our team swapped their usual tasks for a fun crafting afternoon and got to work making brand-new fire hose hangers from scratch. With plenty of teamwork, creativity, and a few laughs along the way, we produced a whole collection of enrichment items ready for our residents to enjoy. We're very proud of the result... and judging by tiger Tajmirs reactions, he approves too! 🐾❤️

Een bijzondere verrijkingsdag bij FELIDA! 🔨🦁

🦁 UPDATE DIEGO 🦁

Diego's journey to FELIDA was anything but easy. 🦁 Born in Czechia in 2016, he was rescued as a young lion from the risk of being sold as a trophy hunting animal. Now, almost two years after his rescue, Diego is thriving at FELIDA. He enjoys the contact of other lions, space 🌱 and enrichment that allow him to express his natural behaviours.

Recently, Diego underwent a comprehensive medical check, performed by our veterinarian and the wildlife veterinarian 🩺 from Cenzoo, giving our team the opportunity to take a closer look at his current health and wellbeing. These routine checks play an important role in helping us understand how our residents are doing as they grow older and allow us to adjust their care whenever needed. From blood tests 🩸 and dental checks to x-rays 🦴 and ultrasounds, every examination provides valuable insight. During the procedure, Diego was also sterilized to prevent offspring during potential socializations with other lions in the future, something we always keep in mind when planning for the long-term wellbeing of our residents. 🐾

While some results are still being analysed, we are happy to share that Diego appears to be in good health. 🧡 The examinations showed mild changes in his kidney function, similar to the findings from our previous checks, but there is currently no reason for concern. We will continue to monitor him closely and adapt his care if needed.

The sun on his face and the autumn breeze through his growing mane. 🍂🦁 Lion Mero is enjoying a moment of relaxation. 💤 But life didn't always look like this for Mero. Born in 2024, he spent the first months of his life illegally kept as a pet in a private home in Czechia. Deprived of the care, space, and family every young lion needs, Mero was denied the chance to grow up as a lion should. When authorities discovered his situation, he was confiscated at just six months old.

In August 2025, with the support of FOUR PAWS, Mero arrived at FELIDA Big Cat Sanctuary, where a new chapter began. ❤️ Here, he receives expert, species-appropriate care and the time he needs to build confidence and heal from his difficult start in life.

🇳🇱

Today, we celebrate the animals who inspire everything we do! 🐾

At FELIDA, every resident has their own story. Many have come from difficult circumstances, where they suffered from neglect, mistreatment, or unsuitable living conditions. Now, they have a safe and peaceful home where they receive the care they deserve. ❤️

This World Animal Day, we're shining a spotlight on our incredible residents. From lions 🦁 to tigers, 🐯 each one is an ambassador for the countless wild animals still in need of protection and a reminder of why animal welfare matters. While their pasts may have been challenging, their futures are filled with compassion, expert care, and the opportunity to simply be cats. Join us in celebrating 🎉 these remarkable animals and in working towards a world where all animals are treated with the dignity and respect they deserve.

Which of our residents has a special place in your heart? Let us know in the comments! ⬇️

Born in a facility in France and later sold to a circus 🎪 in Germany, Manuschka was forced to perform tricks from the time she was just a cub. 🦁💔 Her life became one of cages, crowds and constant travel.

Today, Manuschka calls FELIDA Big Cat Sanctuary home.

While her past cannot be changed, she now has access to better enclosures, expert care, and opportunities to make her own choices. Whether she's exploring her habitat, enjoying enrichment, or finding a comfortable spot to relax, every day looks very different from the life she once knew. 🧡

Who's enjoying the view more: Zora or Mero? 🦁 These two residents were recently spotted relaxing next to each other. With access to their indoor and outdoor enclosures, enrichment, and dedicated care, Zora and Mero spend their days exploring, resting, and enjoying the surroundings at their own pace. We are so happy seeing them comfortable in the grass and keeping an eye on each other. 🌿🧡
