Lest we forget.

On May 1st we once again gathered to remember the crew of Halifax JB803, which crashed near Muiden during the night of 30 April / 1 May 1943.

During the annual remembrance ceremony at the monument on the Zuidpolderweg, veterans, local residents, military personnel and representatives of the municipality came together to honour the seven young airmen who lost their lives during the Second World War.

Flowers were laid, speeches were given, and a moment of silence followed by a salute paid tribute to the crew of JB803 — including Sergeant William Robert Louth, who remains missing to this day.

More than 80 years later, their story continues to bring people together and reminds us of the importance of remembrance and freedom.

We would like to thank everyone who attended and contributed to this respectful commemoration.

Lest we forget.

On 1 May 1943, Flying Officer Arthur Edward “Ted” Parsons (RCAF), aged 26, served as navigator aboard Halifax JB803 of No. 77 Squadron RAF during a mission to Essen.

Parsons was a highly regarded navigator, graduating near the top of his class and known for his precision and discipline.

During the outbound flight, the aircraft was intercepted over the Netherlands by a German night fighter. In the final moments, Parsons left the aircraft by parachute. He survived the descent, but tragically landed in the IJsselmeer, where he lost his life.

His body was later recovered.

Today, he is laid to rest at Muiden General Cemetery (Row I, Grave 85), alongside five of his fellow crew members. One crew member, Sergeant William Louth, remains missing.

Since 2017/2018, ongoing research has been conducted to reconstruct the final flight of Halifax JB803 and to preserve the individual stories of its crew.

We invite you to learn more about Arthur Parsons and his fellow airmen:

Wij zullen hen blijven herinneren.

On 1 May 1943, Sergeant Ian Douglas Crawford—just 21 years old—was serving as the flight engineer aboard Halifax JB803 (77 Squadron, RAF) when it was shot down over the Netherlands.
Originally from Scotland, Ian left the aircraft by parachute during the final moments of the mission. He came down in the cold waters of the IJsselmeer, where he tragically lost his life.
His body was recovered days later and he is now laid to rest in Muiden General Cemetery, Row I, Grave 80.
He rests alongside five of his crew members; one, William Louth, remains missing.
After the war, his family was informed of his burial, bringing some closure after a long period of uncertainty.
Today, Ian is remembered with honor and respect. Each year, during the Dutch Remembrance Days on May 4 and 5, people gather to pay tribute to him and his fellow crew members.
And on Christmas Eve, a quiet tradition continues—
a candle is placed on his grave, together with those of his six crewmates.
We will remember them.

Every Christmas Eve, we come together as a family to remember.

Our children—Lisa (13), Joost (11), and Louise (5)—place candles in silence for the seven Royal Air Force airmen who lost their lives when Halifax JB803 crashed in the early hours of 1 May 1943.

They light these candles not because they were asked to, but because remembrance has become part of who we are. Each flame stands for a young life lost, for families who never received their loved ones back, and for a freedom that came at a terrible cost. In this quiet moment, our children give these airmen what time cannot erase: a place in the present.

We have done this every year since 2016. What began as a single act of remembrance has grown into a deeply rooted family tradition. It matters to us because memory does not survive on monuments alone—it survives when it is passed on. By involving our children, we ensure that these men are not just names from the past, but human beings whose courage still deserves to be acknowledged.

For the first time, the accompanying music has been sung and recorded by me, David van Coolwijk. It is a modest attempt to capture the feeling of Christmas Eve in an honest and respectful way—to support the moment without overpowering it, and to let reflection, silence, and remembrance remain at the center.

We believe it is important that our children understand why this matters. Not through grand words, but through simple acts. Through silence. Through candlelight. Through the understanding that peace and freedom were paid for by others, long before them.

On Christmas Eve, while the world is filled with warmth and light, these candles remind us to look back, to be grateful, and to remember.

Because as long as we remember them, they are not forgotten.

On the night of April 30 to May 1, 1943, Handley Page Halifax JB803 of 77 Squadron RAF took off for a mission over Essen. The aircraft never returned. It was shot down near Muiden, and six young men of the crew were laid to rest in the local cemetery. One, Sergeant William Robert Louth, remains missing to this day.

For years, dedicated research has been carried out to uncover their story – tracing relatives, studying RAF archives, and piecing together what happened that night. The new website brings all of this together:
✦ Detailed crew biographies and personal stories
✦ Research findings and archival documents
✦ Information on the crash and aftermath
✦ Updates on the ongoing search for the missing airman

The renewed website is not only a place of remembrance, but also a hub for history enthusiasts, families, and anyone who values the memory of those who gave their lives for our freedom.

Flight Sergeant Thomas Deuel Scarff (Canada) – In Memory

Over the past years, I’ve conducted in-depth research into the crew of Halifax JB803. Today, I’d like to share the story of one of them: Thomas Deuel Scarff, a Canadian air gunner of 77 Squadron RAF.

Thomas was born on June 17, 1914, and grew up in Nova Scotia. On May 1, 1943, he lost his life when Halifax JB803 was shot down near Muiden. His body was discovered at the crash site He now rests at the cemetery in Muiden, not far from where his aircraft came down.

What makes Scarff especially memorable is that he also wrote. His family has a diary, they found a short but powerful poem in his own handwriting. These words became the heart of the song “A Vacant Place”, which I had the honour of creating in his memory.

Over the past few years, I have been deeply involved in researching Halifax JB803 of 77 Squadron. Through extensive work tracing and contacting relatives of the crew — a process that took several years — along with studying the squadron’s ORBs and acquiring the official AIR81 casualty files, I have been able to build a fairly complete picture of the men who flew aboard JB803.
To avoid overwhelming this page with information, I will post individual crew member profiles from time to time. In this way, each man’s story can be remembered and honored with the attention it deserves.
I will start with sgt. Gordon Watson Pilot
