Met de uitreiking van de Roosevelt Four Freedoms Awards houdt de Roosevelt Foundation het gedachtegoe Elk jaar worden de Four Freedoms Awards uitgereikt.

In even jaren in Nederland, in Middelburg, en in oneven jaren in de Verenigde Staten in New York. Met de uitreiking van de Awards vraagt de Roosevelt Foundation aandacht voor Roosevelts vier vrijheden: vrijheid van meningsuiting, vrijheid van godsdienst, vrijwaring van gebrek en vrijwaring van vrees. Samen met andere organisaties willen we mensen inspireren werk te maken van vrijheid, zodat iedereen, waar ook ter wereld in vrijheid kan leven.

It’s hard to believe it’s already been almost a month, but we still look back with great pride on the Four Freedoms Awards Ceremony 2026. To relive that special day once more, here are several previously unseen moments. 📸

👑 King Willem-Alexander and Princess Beatrix are welcomed upon arrival by the board of the Roosevelt Foundation.
🤝 Prime Minister Rob Jetten and President Zelenskyy speak together ahead of the ceremony.
🏅 King Willem-Alexander meets laureates Gisele Pelicot and Jodie Ginsberg of Committee to Protect Journalists.
✍️ Princess Beatrix signs the Four Freedoms Awards 2026 guestbook.
🚶‍♂️ Guests gather and wait to enter the Nieuwe Kerk for the ceremony.

Op 4 mei herdenken we. Op 5 mei vieren we onze vrijheid. Deze dagen staan in Nederland in het teken van verlies, veerkracht en de waarde van vrijheid. Waarden die Franklin D. Roosevelt al op 6 januari 1941 kernachtig verwoordde in zijn historische Four Freedoms Speech. In die toespraak benoemde hij vier vrijheden die voor iedereen, overal ter wereld, zouden moeten gelden: vrijheid van meningsuiting, vrijheid van godsdienst, vrijwaring van gebrek en vrijwaring van vrees. Deze visie ontstond in een wereld die op de rand van oorlog stond.

Deze dagen voelen we opnieuw hoe actueel en noodzakelijk deze vrijheden zijn en hoe belangrijk het blijft om vrijheid te beschermen. 🕊️

On May 4, we commemorate. On May 5, we celebrate our freedom. In the Netherlands, these days are marked by loss, resilience, and the value of freedom. Values that Franklin D. Roosevelt expressed so powerfully in his historic Four Freedoms speech on January 6, 1941. In that speech, he identified four freedoms that should apply to everyone, everywhere in the world: freedom of speech, freedom of worship, freedom from want, and freedom from fear. This vision emerged in a world on the brink of war.

These days, we feel once again how relevant and necessary these freedoms are and how important it remains to protect freedom.

Voorzitter van de Roosevelt Foundation en Commissaris van de Koning in de provincie Zeeland, Hugo de Jonge, opende de Four Freedoms Awards ceremonie. In zijn speech benadrukte hij de blijvende relevantie van president Roosevelts vier vrijheden en riep hij op tot nieuwe moed om deze te blijven verdedigen in een wereld waarin ze niet langer vanzelfsprekend zijn.

Hij stond stil bij de laureaten en liet zien dat de strijd voor vrijheid en mensenrechten dichtbij huis begint, bij gewone mensen die opstaan, zich uitspreken en het verschil maken.

Passing the torch – Een eerbetoon aan Anne Roosevelt

Met beelden uit de vele jaren waarin zij betrokken was, keken we tijdens de ceremonie terug op haar rol binnen de Four Freedoms Awards. Nu zij stopt als voorzitter van het Roosevelt Institute, staan we stil bij haar betrokkenheid en nemen we met waardering afscheid.

Een bijzonder en emotioneel moment tijdens de Four Freedoms Awards.

Tijdens de ceremonie brachten we een eerbetoon aan Anna Eleanor ‘’Anne’’ Roosevelt, de kleindochter van Franklin en Eleanor Roosevelt, die jarenlang nauw betrokken was bij de Four Freedoms Awards en nu haar rol als voorzitter van het Roosevelt Institute neerlegt.

We zijn dankbaar voor de fijne samenwerking, haar leiderschap, haar vriendschap, haar visie en haar onvermoeibare geloof in de kracht van vrijheid.

A special and emotional moment during the Four Freedoms Awards.

During the ceremony, we paid tribute to Anna Eleanor ‘’Anne’’ Roosevelt, the granddaughter of Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt, who has been closely involved with the Four Freedoms Awards for many years and is now stepping down as chair of the Roosevelt Institute.

We are grateful for the excellent cooperation, her leadership, her friendship, her vision, and her tireless belief in the power of freedom.

Een anonieme laureaat, wiens identiteit vanwege persoonlijke veiligheidredenen niet bekend gemaakt kan worden, ontving de Freedom of Worship Award. Dagmar Oudshoorn sprak over het belang van vrijheid van godsdienst wereldwijd.

Vrijheid van godsdienst werd door President Roosevelt gezien als essentieel in een vrije wereld. Het betekent dat iedereen recht heeft om zijn eigen geloof te kiezen of helemaal niet te geloven. Deze vrijheid zorgt voor een tolerantere en meer diverse samenleving, waarin mensen hun overtuigingen op verschillende manieren mogen uiten en elkaars keuzes respecteren.

An anonymous laureate, whose identity cannot be disclosed for personal safety reasons, received the Freedom of Worship Award. Dagmar Oudshoorn spoke about the importance of freedom of religion worldwide.

Freedom of religion was seen by President Roosevelt as essential in a free world. It means that everyone has the right to choose their own faith or to have no religion at all. This freedom contributes to a more tolerant and diverse society, where people can express their beliefs in different ways and respect each other’s choices.
