Dear Pluralists🤓
As promised, here is the big news!
PINE is happy to announce a new concept series of events: The Economic Living Room!
What is it about? We will host semi-guided discussions on some hot topics in the economic discourse. We want this to be a way to strengthen our community by sharing ideas informally and bonding over free drinks and food! Austerity & Fascism will be in our Living Room next Monday, UCM room D0.033 starting from 18:30. Our discussion will be opened by some insights from Clara Mattei, a political economist at The New School for Social Research, recently published book “How Economists Invented Austerity & Paved the Way to Fascism”. Again, this concept series is open to students; no background research will be needed! Everyone is welcome in PINE Economic Living Room! What are you waiting? Join our sofa this Monday! 🛋

We are very honoured to welcome Dr. Patrick Kaczmarczyk for our very first guest lecture this academic year!

Competition fosters economic development! Or at least that’s what is being suggested by neoliberal politicians and many mainstream economists alike. But is that actually the case? In times of persistent economic crises and global inequality, shouldn’t we completely rethink the models we base such conclusions on? Dr. Kaczmarczyk offers a refreshing alternative which focuses around international collaboration instead of an “every man for himself” mentality, which can even be harmful to our collective economic wellbeing.

Patrick completed his PhD at Sheffield University and Sciences Po. Prior to that he worked as a consultant at the United Nations on questions of capital market stability in developing and emerging economies. He is currently working as a policy consultant at the SPD economic forum. In addition to his academic and policymaking work, which is broadly related to dynamic theories of economic development and sustainability, he has also published his first book, “Kampf der Nationen” (Clash of Nations) earlier this year. Patrick is currently working on releasing his second book, which is dealing with social, political and of course economic questions in a broad scope. The views and arguments he will convey are his personal views and not those of any of the organizations that he is or has been associated with.

At the end of August, one of our members joined the Rethinking Economics International Gathering 2022 in France. Although two months have passed, we want to share our group's key takeaways from this experience.

(1) Representatives from local and national groups from all around the world participated in the gathering, emphasizing more than ever that Rethinking Economics is an international movement of which PINE Maastricht is proudly part.

(2) Despite the attendees’ diverse backgrounds, common values and visions, as well as the shared struggle against real-world problems, such as climate change, inequality, and discrimination, built a strong base for discussion and exchange.

(3) Ultimately, highlighting and discussing the motivation for pluralism in economics matters equally as the emphasis on interdisciplinary as well as methodological and epistemological discourses. These motivations closely relate to the above-mentioned real-world problems and require the consideration of various viewpoints, especially those that economists often overhear.

(4) Lastly, we want to empahsize the importance of collective action to change the economics profession for the people and the planet. This implies collaborating with other social and academic movements that fight for a more just world. As future economists, we must remember that an economics degree gives no more legitimation to criticize economics, but that this criticism is open to all, especially those most affected by it.

We would like to invite you all to our first Open Meeting of this academic year. We are going to meet up this upcoming Monday, September 19th at 6:30pm in the UCM building (Zwingelput 4), room D0.037. At PINE, we want to assess the current curriculum and learn more about various economic schools of thought. To do that we organize regular meetings, guest lectures, workshops and book circles. As the modern world becomes increasingly more complex, the field of economics needs to become more interdisciplinary and can learn a lot from fields such as sociology, political science, law and others. We are therefore by no means restricted to any disciplines and would be more than happy to welcome people from diverse academic backgrounds. We‘d be very happy to see many new (and maybe some familiar) faces.

In this third episode of our Conversations with Deans series we talk with prof. dr. Wilko Letterie from Maastricht University. Again, diving deeper into the strengths of the university and its economics programme and discuss how the university’s vision of economics education relates to the values of RE:NL. The overarching goal of the series is to get a better understanding of the status of economics education in the Netherlands. The interview was conducted by Hannah Scheibe and Moritz Odersky with the support of Jan Frohn.

Check out the interview on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=myB64WhVbzo (or as a podcast on Spotify).

Thanks to the dedication and enthusiasm of all the project members. Let’s keep the conversation going!
