Racism isn’t just one story, it shows up differently across cultures, countries and communities.

From colonisation to migration, from stereotypes to state violence, from everyday micro-aggressions to the implicit bias that shapes the way people of colour are treated. Racial discrimination comes in many different forms.

Racial discrimination is an issue that still continuously plagues our society. We absolutely stand on the belief that there is no room for racism in Maastricht and no room for racism in the world.

Today, the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, is a time to reflect and educate ourselves on this topic.

We at MARS leave you with this small list of different forms of media that explore migration, colonisation, racism and injustice from different perspectives.

Take the time to learn, engage and start to question your individual biases.

Feel free to add your own recommendations below⬇️

For our third and final screening, we’re looking at The Jungle Book.

Disney’s The Jungle Book draws on colonial-era ideas about nature, civilisation, and belonging — presenting the jungle as a space to be ruled, escaped, or “tamed.” But whose worldview shapes this story? How are non-Western cultures imagined or flattened? And what does it mean when a children’s film quietly reflects the logic of empire?

We’ll watch the film, unpack the historical and ideological context, and have an open, reflective discussion — no previous knowledge required.

📍 Location: Sint Hubertuslaan 12

Tonight was such an amazing night, filled with meaningful dialogue and the exchange of personal stories and opinions was so insightful.

Thank you to & for helping MARS to organise such a great event.

Migration has always been part of human history. The rise in hatred against migrants is not natural, it is manufactured and BY DESIGN. There is no big migrant crisis, the real crisis is in how we choose to see and speak about other human beings.

Narratives are extremely powerful and the way we speak about migration shapes the world we build. Reshaping our narratives is the first step towards reshaping our world so thank you to everyone who came tonight and challenged the narrative.
