443 overzichtsstudies.
Bijna geen enkele gaat over het geld.

In opdracht van de Wereldgezondheidsorganisatie bekeek Trimbos wat er bekend is over games en gezondheid. Het rapport verscheen op 25 augustus. De onderzoekers namen 443 overzichtsstudies door, over acht gezondheidsgebieden, van 2010 tot en met 2025.

Over leren, beweging, slaap en verslaving is veel geschreven. Over het geld bijna niets. Onderzoeker Nastasia Griffioen zegt het in het rapport zelf: de industrie achter games verdient aan microtransacties en loot boxes, en juist daarover zijn er weinig overzichtsstudies.

Dat g*t is niet alleen wetenschappelijk. De Raad van State besliste in maart 2022 dat de packs in FIFA22 geen opzichzelfstaand spel zijn en daarom geen kansspel. Voor legaal online gokken geldt in Nederland een grens van 18 jaar, met een identiteitscheck bij iedere aanmelding. Voor die packs geldt geen van beide.

In Belgie oordeelde de Kansspelcommissie in 2018 precies het omgekeerde. Hetzelfde spel, dezelfde kist, twee antwoorden. En het Europees Parlement vroeg in november 2025 om een verbod op gokachtige mechanismen in games die voor kinderen toegankelijk zijn. Dat is een oproep en geen wet.

Wij beweren niet dat loot boxes gokverslaving veroorzaken, want dat is niet vastgesteld. Wat wel vaststaat is dit: een kind in Nederland mag deze kist openen zonder dat iemand vraagt hoe oud het is. Hoe lang vinden wij dat nog logisch?

That is how many of them had ever been diagnosed.

Today is International FASD Awareness Day. FASD is what alcohol during pregnancy can leave behind in a child, and what it leaves behind stays for life.

A study in four American communities looked at 6,639 children in their first school year. On the most cautious of the researchers' own estimates, between 1.1 and 5.0 percent of them had a fetal alcohol spectrum disorder. Of the 222 children they identified, two had ever been diagnosed with it before.

Worldwide the estimate is 7.7 in every 1,000 children and young people, roughly one in 130.

That gap between 222 and 2 is the reason this day exists. Not to point at anyone. To say out loud that a lifelong thing goes almost entirely unnamed, including by the adults who see these children every day.

There is no known safe amount of alcohol during pregnancy. That one sentence is the whole message of 9 September.

That is how many families send a child to fetch the drink.

Researchers at the University at Buffalo asked 260 parents and their children what part the child plays when the adults drink at home. The children were around eleven. In 31 percent of those families the child was involved, and most of the time that meant fetching or opening a drink.

One finding is worth stopping at. A sip with permission was not linked to children believing that their parents approve of drinking under age. Fetching and pouring was.

The researchers give a plain explanation. A sip usually comes with a conversation about alcohol. An errand comes with nothing, because it is only an errand.

This is one study of 260 families in the United States, measured at a single moment, so it shows a link and not a cause. We put it here because noticing it costs nothing.

International Overdose Awareness Day was held for the first time in 2001. This year the theme is: twenty five years on, still needed. Which is a polite way of saying that a quarter of a century later, we are still here.

The UN drugs office reported in June that one in nine men with a drug use disorder receives treatment, and one in twenty three women. The World Health Organization puts the overall figure at less than ten percent of everyone who needs it.

We know what works. The gap is not knowledge. The gap is decisions, and decisions are made by people who can be asked.

We are not experts. We make visible what experts say.

Nobody planted anything here for two summers.

This is from The Garden, the story we tell next to the numbers. In the first chapter there is a gap in the fourth row where no young tree has been planted since. The gardener called Health passes it every morning, and she has never once thought of it as empty ground.

Tomorrow is International Overdose Awareness Day, and it exists for the same reason that gap does.

The Garden does not exist. Everything else in the book does.

Two lanterns. One where we stand, one where we are going.

In March 2027 the Commission on Narcotic Drugs meets in Vienna, where drug policy for the coming years is set. We want to be there with the Eindhoven Declaration in our hands and as many names on it as we can g*ther.

Every child learns what normal looks like.

Between 1990 and 2021, 417,198 children and young people under the age of twenty died of alcohol related causes, across 194 countries. That is from a study published in Scientific Reports in April of this year.

The world figure hides the real story. In high income countries the number fell by 60 percent. In lower middle income countries it rose by 70 percent, and in low income countries by 67 percent. In 59 of the 194 countries it is still getting worse.

The lesson at the table is the same everywhere. What differs is what happens next.

We talk about the children. This number is about us.

The UN drugs office published its World Drug Report in June. 331 million people used drugs in 2024, which is 6.2 percent of everyone aged fifteen to sixty four. Ten years ago that was 5.2 percent.

Prevention is usually aimed at teenagers. The figures are not about teenagers. They are about the people who set the example, in offices, at family tables, on Friday afternoons.

One of these two is ni****ne.

Same counter, same size, same colours, same place beside the till. Behind the counter the to***co is locked away with a padlock. On the counter it is not.

The World Health Organization said in May of this year that around 160 countries have no rule at all for ni****ne pouches, and that about 23 billion of them were sold in 2024. They are flavoured. They are cheap. They are next to the sweets.

Article 33 of the Convention on the Rights of the Child says children must be protected from narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances. A product that looks like sweets is not protection.

Renée Besseling spent forty years trying to get drug prevention onto the desks of policy makers. Her conclusion after all that time: they don't listen.

So she stopped waiting for them.

One Voice, One Message is a platform anyone can step onto — parents, teachers, NGOs, sports clubs — as long as they stand behind one sentence: every child has the right to grow up in a safe environment, free from drugs.

That sentence is Article 33 of the Convention on the Rights of the Child. 196 countries are bound by it. Not one of them asked for an exception.
