Nobody planted anything here for two summers.

This is from The Garden, the story we tell next to the numbers. In the first chapter there is a gap in the fourth row where no young tree has been planted since. The gardener called Health passes it every morning, and she has never once thought of it as empty ground.

Tomorrow is International Overdose Awareness Day, and it exists for the same reason that gap does.

The Garden does not exist. Everything else in the book does.

Two lanterns. One where we stand, one where we are going.

In March 2027 the Commission on Narcotic Drugs meets in Vienna, where drug policy for the coming years is set. We want to be there with the Eindhoven Declaration in our hands and as many names on it as we can gather.

Every child learns what normal looks like.

Between 1990 and 2021, 417,198 children and young people under the age of twenty died of alcohol related causes, across 194 countries. That is from a study published in Scientific Reports in April of this year.

The world figure hides the real story. In high income countries the number fell by 60 percent. In lower middle income countries it rose by 70 percent, and in low income countries by 67 percent. In 59 of the 194 countries it is still getting worse.

The lesson at the table is the same everywhere. What differs is what happens next.

We talk about the children. This number is about us.

The UN drugs office published its World Drug Report in June. 331 million people used drugs in 2024, which is 6.2 percent of everyone aged fifteen to sixty four. Ten years ago that was 5.2 percent.

Prevention is usually aimed at teenagers. The figures are not about teenagers. They are about the people who set the example, in offices, at family tables, on Friday afternoons.

We are not experts. We make visible what experts say.

One of these two is ni****ne.

Same counter, same size, same colours, same place beside the till. Behind the counter the to***co is locked away with a padlock. On the counter it is not.

The World Health Organization said in May of this year that around 160 countries have no rule at all for ni****ne pouches, and that about 23 billion of them were sold in 2024. They are flavoured. They are cheap. They are next to the sweets.

We are not experts. We make visible what experts say.

Article 33 of the Convention on the Rights of the Child says children must be protected from narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances. A product that looks like sweets is not protection.

Renée Besseling spent forty years trying to get drug prevention onto the desks of policy makers. Her conclusion after all that time: they don't listen.

So she stopped waiting for them.

One Voice, One Message is a platform anyone can step onto — parents, teachers, NGOs, sports clubs — as long as they stand behind one sentence: every child has the right to grow up in a safe environment, free from drugs.

That sentence is Article 33 of the Convention on the Rights of the Child. 196 countries are bound by it. Not one of them asked for an exception.

"Only ordinary people can put their voice together."

Ze waren er allemaal. Jassen op schoot, wachtend op tien minuten over hun eigen kind. En een meter verderop lag het blad, de hele avond, onaangeraakt.

196 landen zijn gebonden aan het Kinderrechtenverdrag. Op het artikel dat kinderen tegen drugs beschermt maakte geen enkel land een voorbehoud. Niet één.

Een belofte zonder namen eronder verdwijnt vanzelf.
