🌍 One profession. Diverse realities. Shared values.

How is embalming practised around the world? What shapes the profession across different countries and regions and where do professionals find common ground?
The FIAT-IFTA Embalming Committee conducted an international survey to explore the realities of embalming across the globe, bringing together perspectives from professionals in the Americas, Europe, Asia, Africa and Oceania.
The findings reveal a profession shaped by very different cultural, legal and educational environments - while sharing fundamental principles and challenges.

🌿 A significant milestone for our FIAT-IFTA National Member, Parque de las Memorias S.A. in Bolivia 🇧🇴 The organisation has become the first in Bolivia’s funeral services and memorial park sector to achieve integrated certification in:
✅ NB/ISO 9001:2015 – Quality Management
🌱 ISO 14001:2015 – Environmental Management
🦺 ISO 45001:2018 – Occupational Health & Safety
🗨️ Nicolas Andrade, CEO of Parque de las Memorias and Bolivia’s current representative to FIAT-IFTA, said: “This conviction has led us to ask fundamental questions: How do we know a family received the support they needed? How do we listen to our staff? How do we act when we find room for improvement? The answers must translate into daily practice across all areas”.
The certification covers the provision of funeral services, burials, cremations, memorial ceremonies, and memorial park operations, as well as commercial and customer service activities.

🗨️ Teresa Saavedra, Founder of Parque de las Memorias and Past President of FIAT-IFTA, said: “This achievement represents much more than technical recognition. It is a concrete way of showing that we care for every family that places its trust in Parque de las Memorias, every member of our team, and the natural environment we are committed to protecting.”

This achievement places Parque de las Memorias among the 1% of organizations that have obtained all three ISO certifications. Lima, Peru 🇵🇪, will host the X International Symposium of the Funeral Industry, organised by ALPAR – Latin American Association of Cemeteries and Funeral Services, from 7–10 October 2026.

Held under the theme “QHAPAQ ÑAN: The Road That Unites Us,” the tenth edition will bring together funeral-sector professionals to explore leadership, service excellence, innovation and collaboration.

The programme is designed as a practical roadmap for the future of funeral organisations, with an emphasis on tools and experiences that participants can apply in their own professional environments:

The VTU Funeral Trade Fair in Gorinchem, the Netherlands 🇳🇱 , is coming to an end. We are delighted to have been part of it and to have had the opportunity to meet so many colleagues and friends. FIAT-IFTA was represented at the event by Vice President Johan Dexters.

Beyond discovering new developments in the funeral sector, the fair offered an important opportunity to exchange ideas, share experiences and gain inspiration from colleagues across the profession.

And the conversations are just as valuable as the innovations: reconnecting with familiar faces, making new contacts and talking about what is changing — and what remains important — in our profession.

🗨️ “Through Funebra, as well as through my international contacts within FIAT-IFTA, I am continually reminded of how valuable it is to keep talking to one another across borders. We can learn a great deal from each other, while the challenges we face are often surprisingly similar. Innovation and renewal are important, but ultimately, craftsmanship, collaboration and human involvement remain the foundation of our profession,” says Johan Dexters.

It has been wonderful to meet so many familiar faces again and to welcome new connections along the way. Thank you to everyone who took the time to meet, talk and share their experiences with us.

🌊 What happens when a new funeral method is put to the test - not only technically, but also scientifically?

In Antwerp, Pontes has launched Belgium’s first aquamation pilot project, working with researchers and experts from KU Leuven, the University of Antwerp, VITO, VMM and Aquafin.

The first test aquamations, carried out in spring 2026, have produced promising initial results:
🔹 The residual liquid was found to be readily biodegradable.
🔹 No human DNA was detected in the residual liquid.

But the project is about more than technology. Research by the University of Antwerp involving 3,275 people in Flanders also explored how people perceive aquamation and found both growing openness and a clear need for more information.
Could aquamation become a third funeral option alongside burial and cremation? And what do the scientific findings tell us so far?
