📊 How do people really feel about cremation today?

A comprehensive new report, “Public Perceptions of Cremation”, published by The Cremation Society to mark its 150th anniversary, offers one of the most comprehensive insights yet into public attitudes towards cremation in the UK.
Based on nine focus groups and a nationally representative survey of nearly 1,600 adults, the research reveals not only how people experience cremation today, but also how expectations of funeral services are changing.
Key findings include:
⚱️ Cremation is now the norm – today, there are 334 crematoria across the UK and around 80% of funerals in the UK involve cremation; 88% of people described their most recent visit to a crematorium as a positive experience.
❓ Misconceptions remain common – 41% of respondents expressed at least one concern about the cremation process, including questions about whether ashes can become mixed or whether more than one person is cremated at the same time.
💬 Many people avoid funeral planning – 31% have either not decided what they want for their own funeral or prefer not to think about it, while confusion between funeral plans and life insurance remains widespread.
🌿 Direct cremation is gaining recognition – 62% have heard of it, valuing its simplicity and affordability, but many still misunderstand what the service actually includes.
💙 Families want more than a funeral – they are looking for clear explanations, meaningful choices, honest conversations, and support in making informed decisions.
For funeral professionals, the message is clear: public confidence in cremation is high, but expectations are evolving. Communication, transparency, and guidance have never been more important.

Standing in Solidarity with Colombia 🇨🇴

Colombia has been struck by one of the strongest earthquakes to hit the country in recent years, leaving at least 132 people dead, more than 570 injured and over 1,500 homes damaged. A state of emergency has been declared, while the death toll is expected to rise as rescue teams continue searching for people who may remain trapped beneath collapsed buildings.

The earthquake, measuring 7.4 in magnitude, struck at 07:34 local time at a depth of 103 kilometres in Chocó province, according to Colombia’s geological service. The powerful tremor was felt across a vast area of western Colombia.

FIAT-IFTA stands in solidarity with the people of Colombia, its Colombian national member, ALPAR, and its Colombian associated members during this extremely difficult time. The organisation’s thoughts are with all those affected, including the families who have lost loved ones, those who have been injured, and the communities facing the consequences of this devastating event.

FIAT-IFTA also recognises that many within the international deathcare community may have friends, family members, colleagues or professional partners in the affected areas. The organisation hopes that rescue and relief efforts will reach those in need as quickly as possible and that affected communities receive the support and assistance required to recover.
