🚶 Historun Walking Tour is back!

We’re excited to finally explore Leiden together on Saturday, 4 July.

Join us as we walk through the streets of Leiden and uncover the stories of Indonesian students during World War II.

⚠️ IMPORTANT UPDATE – Historun Leiden ⚠️

Due to a Code Red weather alert, we have made changes to tomorrow’s programme to ensure everyone’s safety.

🚶 The Outdoor Walking Tour has been postponed.

Instead, the tour will be changed into a Virtual Walking Tour. The tour will still be guided, but participants will experience the walking route through video during the exhibition.

Getting to Historun’s walking tour assembly point 🗺️

Our assembly point is at:

Herta Mohr Building

If you are coming from Leiden Centraal, you can take the bus to Leiden, Paterstraat, then walk approximately 4 minutes to the Herta Mohr Building.

Bus stop: Paterstraat 10:00 slot — line 187 13:30 slot — line 183

The exhibition and storytelling session will also take place at the same location, Herta Mohr Building.

Young Indonesians once lived in Leiden: they studied here, built communities here, and when war came, some chose to stay and resist.

Join us as we walk through streets that remember them and uncover the stories of Indonesian students during World War II, including through a storytelling session with the children of Indonesian resistance fighters.

“The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.”

Some values are passed on through stories, memories, and the way people remember those who came before them.

As part of Historun 2026’s oral research, we visited Bu Iljunah, daughter of resistance fighters Gondho Pratomo and Bernardina “Narda” Wilhelmina Valandt. Through her stories, we got to see a more personal side of history — how they lived and stayed true to their values.

Historun is PPI Leiden’s annual historical city tour of Leiden, and this year we’re doing something extra special!

In collaboration with KITLV and Leiden University, we will also host a special exhibition exploring:

🇳🇱 Liberation Day

On May 5, the Netherlands commemorates the end of World War II and celebrates freedom.

Beyond this national celebration, there are also stories that are often overlooked — including the role of Indonesian students in the Netherlands during the war.

In Leiden, some Indonesian students were involved in resistance efforts. One of them was Irawan Soejono, a Leiden student who contributed to underground movements and lost his life just months before liberation.

Curious to learn more? Join us at Historun 2026 as we explore these stories and reflect on the shared history between Indonesia and the Netherlands.
