We happily announce the theme and date of the upcoming conference to you all: Language in Motion on the 9th, 10th and 11th of April 2021!

We live in an ever-changing world — rarely is anything at stand-still. To emphasize the evolving nature of language and linguistics, we have picked 'Language in Motion' as this year's theme. This powerful metaphor (thank you Lakoff) is open for free interpretation: one might think of moving through space during migrations (past or present), envisage a language developing internally through time or conjure up the imagery of a (re)vitalized language ascending from the depths of collective oblivion to the hallmark of modern times: the Internet. How does your language move?

(EN) The university elections are nearing, so if you have an interest in becoming more active within the university and make a difference for the students of our faculty, you can either make yourself eligible for election or you can support those in the running for the faculty council by joining a board that will be installed at each faculty. These boards will support those who are elected in the faculty councils.

At the conference there will not only be presentations, but also two workshops.
The first will be given by Huub Pragt on Friday the 17th of April. Huub Pragt is an Egyptologist and focuses on education in the language and culture of ancient Egypt.

"Egyptian hieroglyphic writing is one of the most artistic writing systems in the world. Yet the enigmatic pictographs of the Ancient Egyptians are not just symbols. The different representations of birds, plants, water waves and walking legs are meant to be read as sound marks. Just like in a rebus, the sound combinations of the signs form the intended Egyptian words. Most words are therefore made up of more hieroglyphs. The hieroglyphic signs do not only appear on temple walls, but also on beautiful objects that are kept in museums. In this workshop, you will learn all about the most important principles of this fascinating Egyptian language and its writing system."

Every Thursday we will announce a new (keynote/workshop) - speaker at the conference, and we are very excited to announce the first keynote speaker of the 14th Student Conference in Linguistics: Helen de Hoop!

Helen de Hoop is a professor in theoretical linguistics at Radboud University Nijmegen.
She will give a talk with the title "The Loss of a Personal Pronoun". Abstract:
"The personal pronoun hun ‘them’ meets a lot of criticism in Dutch society, not only from language purists, but from language users in general. This can be attributed to a strong mistrust of this pronoun, given that it is well-known for violating no less than two prescriptive rules, one of which prohibits its use as a subject, and the other its use as a direct object or complement of a preposition.
This has resulted in a tendency to avoid the use of this personal pronoun across the board. Despite the fact that hun ‘them’ as a personal pronoun has the advantage of exclusively referring to animate or even human individuals, I argue that it is fighting a lost battle with the other personal pronouns, which are used to express third person plural. I conclude that it will withdraw from the competition in order to commit itself entirely to its function as a possessive pronoun ‘their’, in which capacity it is unique."
