Morukuru Goodwill Foundation Morukuru Goodwill Foundation is a non profit organization that believes in providing a helping hand within the South African bush, embracing the living.

Goodwill Foundation

We are blessed to have the beauty and tranquility surrounding us in the African bush, and also by the many wonderful communities with whom we interact on a daily basis. We believe in giving back to Africa – to her wildlife, in the form of preservation and conservation, and to her local communities, working with them to educate, mentor and empower. In the spirit of Operation P

hoenix – the original landmark wildlife re-introduction and monitoring project that took place in Madikwe from 1992 to 1999 – the owners of Morukuru continue to give generously of their time, staff and other resources towards Parks Board projects such as wildlife collaring, darting, monitoring and relocation initiatives. A well-known ecologist is a frequent visitor and advisor to Morukuru and inputs from respected experts such as this help ensure our facility and operations are ecologically and environmentally sound. Similarly we look for creative ways to partner with our local communities in Madikwe, such as the Molatedi Village. This partnering takes the form of many different initiatives, from the dancers who perform at Morukuru to our book donation project; the eradication of the invasive Sickle bush at Morukuru, undertaken manually in order to provide local employment, to the planting of trees. If you would like to help, please purchase a tree to plant somewhere at Morukuru or Madikwe, or even at home. In a dual environmental and community empowerment initiative, the community sorts and collects recycled refuse that they then resell to companies which deal commercially in recycled materials. Your presence here makes these initiatives possible. Together, we work for the benefit not only of the greater environment and community, but towards the preservation of one of Africa’s greatest wildlife sanctuaries.

We are in Phase 2 of the leopard monitoring project with Landmark Leopard & Predator Project - South Africa and CapeNature . Between February and May 2026, the camera traps captured a total of 5466 usable photographs. In the last three months, 20 mammals and 13 bird species were recorded. Both male leopards detected during Phase 01 were recorded both inside and outside the De Hoop Nature Reserve. In some good news, two previously undetected individuals were observed: one leopard (presumably a male) and another (presumably a female) – additional photographs will be required to confirm the s*x of these leopards.

The glimpse into the biodiversity remains fascinating with caracal, African wild cat, honey badgers and more just going about their business. We are just as curious as the baboons are about the camera traps.

Kai’s story continues.

From rescue to recovery, every stage of Kai’s journey offers valuable insight into the resilience of sea turtles and the importance of protecting our oceans.

As his journey unfolds, ongoing tracking and monitoring will help us better understand his movements, behaviour and adaptation back in the wild, contributing important knowledge to marine conservation efforts.

There is still more to come on Kai, and we look forward to sharing updates as we continue following his journey. 🩵

Join us for a meaningful morning by the sea as we come together for our annual Beach Clean-Up, a chance to give back to the coastline that gives so much to us.

Beginning at Bites Beach Cafe, we’ll gather before making our way to the starting point, walking the shoreline back with purpose, connection and care.

It is a simple but powerful way to spend a morning: fresh ocean air, shared effort, and the rewarding feeling of leaving the beach a little better than we found it. Along the way, participants will also have the rare opportunity to explore this remarkable stretch of coastline on foot, taking in its wild beauty from a unique perspective.

The walk begins at 8:30 and usually lasts between four and six hours, ending with a relaxed lunch at Bites, included in the R185 participation fee.

We would love for locals, friends and families to join us in this collective effort to protect the natural beauty of our beaches for generations to come.

Special thanks to our partners CapeNature , De Hoop Collection Nature Reserve and Denel. It's going to be a memorable day.

Some more exciting news is that Nori has already journeyed an incredible 6,320km since her release, averaging 41km each day as she explores the open ocean. Her travels are a remarkable testament to the resilience of these turtles and the impact of dedicated conservation.

Nori’s story is a celebration of what’s possible through collaboration and care. We’re proud to support and share the inspiring work of the Two Oceans Aquarium Turtle Conservation Centre.

Follow her journey below. 💙

There’s a quiet sense of excitement as Kai, our much-loved loggerhead at the Two Oceans Aquarium Foundation , edges closer to his next chapter. After dedicated rehabilitation, sponsored by the Morukuru Goodwill Foundation, Kai is now swimming with confidence and independence in the I&J Ocean Exhibit.

With his satellite tag on order and the veterinary team’s encouragement, plans for Kai’s release are beginning to take shape. His long-awaited return to the ocean is nearly here, watch this space for more details.

Just over a year ago, we installed the first camera traps in De Hoop Nature Reserve.

What the cameras have revealed since then is both thrilling and humbling. Two confirmed adult male leopards, moving through protected and unprotected land, and a third individual, newly identified. And an absence that matters just as much as the presences - no confirmed resident female yet, which raises questions about long-term survival that we're not yet able to answer.

This is what real conservation looks like. The patient, uncertain, necessary work of understanding what's actually there, and what might be missing.

On International Leopard Day, we're proud to be part of that work alongside the Morukuru Goodwill Foundation, Landmark Leopard & Predator Project - South Africa, and CapeNature .

There are animals you see on safari. And then there are animals that see you first, and choose, entirely on their own terms, whether to reveal themselves at all.

Happy International Leopard Day to the most enigmatic resident of the African bush.

We will never stop being humbled by you.

On World Penguin Day, we shine a light on the African penguin, an endearing symbol of our coastline, but also a species under serious threat. Considered critically endangered with numbers in decline due to historical factors, habitat loss, overfishing, and environmental changes, the need for conservation has never been greater.

The Morukuru Goodwill Foundation visited and donated to the African Penguin and Seabird Sanctuary in Gansbaai, which is dedicated to protecting these remarkable birds.

Every visit to the coast is a reminder of what’s at stake - and an invitation to be part of the solution. Here’s to the African penguin: resilient, unique, and deserving of our care.
