As the world becomes increasingly digital, automated and driven by speed, there is a growing opportunity to reconnect with what makes things truly valuable: human skill, material knowledge and the ability to create something that lasts.

For the leather industry, this is particularly relevant.

Leather has a unique relationship with craftsmanship. It is a material that responds to the hand, develops character over time and rewards the knowledge of those who understand how to cut, shape, stitch, finish and work with it.

This month, there are two significant campaigns spreading across the world spotlighting the benefits of the circular economy.

Taking place now, Circular Week, organised by ReLondon in London, UK and later this month, Global Circular Week (https://www.circularweek.com/) - a set of international circular campaign initiatives.

Circularity is about making better use of the resources we already have, keeping materials in use for longer and reducing waste. Leather can contribute to this when it is made responsibly, cared for, repaired, reused and given a second life.

Leather's contribution to circularity isn't simply about being leather. It's about making things responsibly, designing for durability, repairing what we own and keeping products in use for as long as possible.

We’re delighted to share the latest chapter in the future plans for the former leather museum in Walsall, UK.

Leather Designer and Educator, has launched a £30,000 crowdfunding raise to create a working home for contemporary leatherwork bringing production, education, community and a professional workspace all together under one roof.

The aim is to create a destination dedicated to the future of leather in Walsall and the UK – combining professional production, education, community initiatives, affordable workspaces and exhibition space all under one roof.

Building on work with Birmingham City University, and with an increasing number of schools and colleges interested in developing leather skills such as Sandwell, BMET, and Solihull (as well as those further afield such as The Jimmy Choo Academy), there is also potential to act as a base for institutions that would struggle to accommodate specialist equipment.

We always want to spotlight the next generation of leather designers and so we’re sharing the Leatherworking Apprenticeship Programme 2026 is now open for applications.

The Leathersellers' Foundation is offering grants of up to £5,000 a year for up to two years to support the training and development of aspiring leatherworkers through apprenticeships and structured training opportunities.

The programme aims not only to provide opportunities for individual apprentices, but also to contribute to a stronger and more sustainable leatherworking sector by ensuring that valuable skills, knowledge and craftsmanship are passed on to future generations.

The grant has supported a wide range of super skilled leather workers including Otis Ingrams from OTZI, In 2018 he was made a QEST scholar with the support of the Leathersellers' Company and completed a BA in Product and Furniture Design from Kingston University.

We are joining our members and the leather industry in celebrating a milestone achievement.

Leather has now officially been removed from the scope of the EU Deforestation Regulation ( ). Evidence clearly shows that leather is not a driver of deforestation and the European Commission has now recognised this.

The decision follows two years of industry efforts sharing scientific evidence that showed leather does not drive deforestation and should not have been covered by the regulation.
