Can we transform systems by changing the stories we tell?

In our latest article on Medium, author Amina Mohamed (Founder of Cameras For Girls) shares how shifting away from extractive storytelling can change power dynamics, donor expectations, and whole systems from the ground up:

♦️ Reframing Agency: Instead of outsiders deciding what is compelling, storytelling begins with relationship, consent, and shared authorship.
♦️ Shifting from Rescue to Support: Moving away from savior narratives to stand alongside capable individuals navigating systemic barriers.
♦️ Rewriting the Narrative: Training young women in media spaces to document lived experiences through resilience, creativity, and dignity, rather than poverty alone.

The takeaway? Storytelling isn’t just a comms strategy - it’s a leverage point. When we change what we show, we change what gets funded.

How can we redesign the conditions that shape behaviour, rather than simply trying to change behaviour itself?

This Medium article, co-created with the Learning Designers Community and Learning Planet Institute, explores why lasting behaviour change depends less on raising awareness and more on creating the conditions that make new behaviours possible.

Bringing together insights from practitioners and researchers, the article features case studies from:

🔸 India: Using the COM-B framework to strengthen malaria prevention through community-centred behavioural design.
🔸 China & Nepal: Reimagining education through LivePBL, where students, parents, and global peers co-create learning.
🔸 India: Applying behavioural nudges to simplify hiring and improve everyday decision-making.
🔸 Peru: Driving educational transformation through participatory research that builds trust, shared leadership, and long-term commitment.

Across these diverse contexts, a common insight emerges: meaningful change happens when we redesign the environments, relationships, and systems that shape behaviour, not when we simply ask people to act differently.

We need a funding system that recognizes what enables lasting impact.

For Catalyst Now member AVDA, growth was not driven by funding alone. It was strengthened through learning spaces, global networks, mentorship, and opportunities to collaborate with other social innovators.

AVDA's experience demonstrates that leadership, collaboration, and peer learning are essential to impact, yet today's funding systems rarely recognize or reward these enabling conditions.

The Ecosystem Funders Council brings funders and social innovators together to close that gap, moving funding beyond isolated projects and investing in systems that create the conditions for systemic change, through collaboration, connection and knowledge- sharing. Reshaping funding starts by reshaping what we value.

This World Humanitarian Day, we are looking closely at how Catalyst Now collaborates with Community Action Collab to rethink emergency response.

Community Action Collab is a collaborative platform that builds the resilience of India's most vulnerable communities through coordinated action. By bringing together over 375 local partners, civil society groups, and government allies, they ensure 10 million people have steady access to healthcare, social safety nets, climate protection, and livelihood support.

For Catalyst Now, this partnership represents what we stand for: changing how the world responds to challenges. By combining local trust and ground-level work with our broader ecosystem of support, we make sure resources go further and communities have the support they need to build lasting resilience.

Can we design an energy future through community-led solutions?

Global energy transition is usually dominated by megawatts, macroeconomics... and men. But a truly just transition requires looking at the system differently.

In our latest Catalyst Now publication on Medium, author Jaya Ramchandani (Faculty at UWC Atlantic College & Education Consultant at We Learn, We Grow) shares how three young women paved the way towards fair regenerative futures, designing real-world interventions in Mongolia, Nepal, and Taiwan. By targeting key leverage points, they are building fairer energy futures from the ground up:

♦️ Mongolia: Oyunbolor is replacing toxic coal with clean, affordable biopellets made from local agricultural waste to tackle urban air pollution.
♦️ Nepal: Sahara is using design to amplify local hydraulic research, securing safer, flood-proof hydropower.
♦️Taiwan: Daphne is co-creating storybooks with Indigenous youth to center tribal sovereignty and community voices in clean energy planning.

The future of energy isn’t just about changing our technology; it’s about shifting power to the people.
